*** Crucial M225 SSD's Available From £102.99 inc VAT ***

windows 7 only takes around 10gb ish up, the install requires upto 17gb or something for unpacking files but only around 10gb once installed. so around 50gb spare after that.

I think i'll get 1 of these and triple boot XP Pro SP3, Win7 x64, Ubuntu 9.04, should have about 30gb spare after installing my appz. Porn will load very fast off it :P

Your gonna need a bigger drive for ya porn!

Don't forget the pagefile as well - will give a nice boost!

It was my understanding that you wouldnt want the pagefile running on the ssd..??? I thought id read you really want to move any hi read/write access files off the disk to prolong its life...

Anyone know how this performs relating to IOPS?? As these seeme to be far more important in day to day general use, than sustained read/write performance...

Would like to see how this compares to the a Vertex, or the new Intels....

Great stuff, could this finally be THE ssd to get for price/performance? It always seems that theres constantly something better just weeks away, even moreso than the rest of the hardware market but this looks like the right product at the right time to invest in?

Whats to be gained getting 2x64gb's in RAID0 over 1x128gb? Fancy myself some of these shortly!

you would see some benefit, but the ssd will be so fast at random writes and seek times that for most things you probably wont notice much speed increase at all. This is very different for traditional harddrives where the write speeds on traditional harddrives are very low, 150mb/s from these crucial drives is very high. If you need 128gb of space then yeah get 2 in raid0 as it will only be about £6 more for you but if you only need 64gb then just get 1.

I'm really curious, Why don't all companies just release firmware with TRIM.... now?
What's all this big wait until after Windows 7 comes out, it's RTM now, it's been in RC for months, just release it already. It especially makes no sense when they're launching new drives like this Crucial drive.

win7 isn't out until 22nd oct, the firmware will be out before around 3rd sep, well before win7 is out in shops.

I find it funny how everyone is going on about how fast SSD's are advancing, I think they are advancing far too slow tbh.

We should be in the mainstream stage of SLCs, why are they STILL using MLCs, yes I know they are cheaper but still, Intel are the only manufacture using SLC and they cost a fortune.

Not only do we need mainstream SLC, but what about SATA III too, the second the prices become 'reasonable' for SSDs, then SATA III comes out, the prices rocket AGAIN lol.

By the time they release SLC SATA III SSD's they are going to cost MEGA BUCKS :(

out of interest, if i bought one of these mainly from a gaming angle what would give me better performance in map load times/ overall snappyness

installing the OS onto this drive and game to another drive

installing games to this drive and OS to another drive

installing both OS and games to this drive

what option would make more sence ?

10 million people downloaded the Windows 7 RC.

As Stone said, the RTM is already out. Which is the final version.

I really don't get waiting another month to release something that they should already have nailed down 99% in the last 6 months. And have been able to tweak very easily to fit the final rtm version.

Yes.

Because:

There is no latency on a SSD (the drive head doesn't have to move) - thus there is your 'snappyness'.

The read/write times are MUCH faster than traditional hard drives, think about it 'write', it means how fast something can be written to the hard drive. If your hard drive is 100MB/s vs 200MB/s, then there is a 100% performance increase in terms of writing something to the hard drive.

Not to mention read times, the time in which something can be read/copied.

It doesn't scale linearly at small reads/writes, which is much of what happens with an OS.

When the first 256GB SSD,s came out what price were they ?

£550ish for a 256GB OCZ Core V1 IIRC
