*** Crucial M225 SSD's Available From £102.99 inc VAT ***

Hmm I flashed mine at the weekend, used my PC last night without issue. Unsure what to do now - I haven't really got anything I can't just reinstall if push comes to shove, but without any means to downgrade what choice so I have?

(Note: I've also run Wiper manually after having installed 1711 :()

Mine is finally on its way now too. \o/

I had a great idea the other day though that I should backup everything to one place instead of scatter files across my other computers... So I've currently got a external HDD on order which has also been dispatched today. However that is being sent by Royal Fail so I will probably be waiting a few days on that. :(

Yes well I will do a full image backup to this external drive then stuff I cannot afford to lose (which is not that much really on my computer if anything) I can scatter across my other computers.

I am doing it mostly out of convenience really as it will just be easier to have a backup of my Steam folder and media files and such on one drive ready to copy over once I have formatted the SSD and my current HDD.

I've had no problems in W7 either, I've disable Trim and Hybrid sleep just in case.
mine is on IDE mode and was like tjhis when i installed W7.

The other day i tried to boot up in AHCI mode and it blue screened.

does I have to install windows in this mode for it to be stable?
It will blue screen if you try that. There are a couple of work arounds.

One method I use it to swap the boot drive onto the motherboards Jmicron sata controller in IDE mode. Enable the AHCI mode for the Intel chipset and when you boot it just finds the AHCI driver for the Intel and installs them. Swap it back and it works.

And there i was thinking a nice easy install and i would be ok ..

Will check what the version the drive has installed tomorrow and take it form there

I can confirm my drive received yesterday was 1571. No problems with 1711 but only ran in AHCI mode for the weekend, and TRIM isn't active if you're running on an ICHxR in RAID (even as a single drive).

If you're worried it looks like there will be a tool to downgrade the firmware; From Crucial's firmware page

Important Notice:
An issue with Firmware update 1711 has been reported by users specific to Windows 7. We are pulling the file from the site until our engineers finish reviewing the issue. Concurrently, we are working to provide a downgrade tool to enable users to revert to the previous Firmware.

Quoted from Crucial forum http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Solid-State-Drives-SSD/Crucial-SSD-support-for-TRIM/td-p/2590/page/5;

"All drives in stock have the old firmware installed.

As of this morning, the update has been pulled from the firmware page until our engineers finish reviewing the issue.

As I think these drives are coming from the US into the UK (check your packaging) I can't see any will have 1711 on.

Another interesting point I noticed there http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Solid-S...ction-be-in-the-upcomming-firmware/td-p/3340;

"Our priority for the upcoming firmware release is the TRIM functionality, however we hope to have updates for garbage collection round about the same time or possibly just after. All updates will be available on the firmware update tool at www.crucial.com/support .

I hope this helps!

Maulmod, Crucial Moderator UK"

I like the sound of that - providing it works, I'm guessing Intel may have to update their drivers to enable it as well.

Ok managed to upload this now. Using 1023s and a 128kb stripe, which gives a better performance than 64kb stripe.

It's important to not only install official Intel drivers, but also enable Volume Write-Back Cache in the Intel Matrix Storage Console which isn't present with the default drivers. Though the 1023s are better than default even with it switched off.

I don't know why, but my drives seem to be reliable on the random writes, but the random reads vary quite a bit.

After a number of tests last night this one is about "average", but the lowest CrystalDisk 4k read of all tests :s

Anyway after 6 installs of Windows, I'm going to settle for this and get my apps and other stuff on to see how it performs in real life - but any tweak suggestions are welcome :)

My drive was with me at 08:20 and its installed and running

I am happy its a lot better with the SSD things work so much quicker.

It has the old firmware so dont need to worry, Just need to look up about some tweeks / drivers

All you need is wiper_0525 and crystalmark 2.2.

Post some results as soon as you can please.

Oh and it would be nice if you had a sig just so we can see what spec you got.

I have installed a few apps but not changed any drivers / setting from the windows 7 install

I have got a few quick questions.

I will be using my Crucial M225 drive alongside my Samsung Spinpoint F1 drive. My motherboard is an Asus P5Q. When I come to install Windows 7, do I need to install the lastest Intel drivers before install (when you get prompted to press F6 and insert a floppy etc) to use AHCI mode? Or I can just leave it using the default Windows 7 drivers and install the Intel ones when I have Windows up? Will I even be able to use AHCI mode if I'm using my Samsung drive as well if at all with my motherboard?

I have downloaded Chipset drivers and Marvell SATA drivers from Asus' website for my motherboard. Will I need to install any of these as well?

SATA/Chipset drivers are for installing after Windows has been installed. The only drivers you'd need before installing Windows would be SATA drivers for Windows XP. Windows 7 will install on an AHCI configured drive without problems.

Cool. I thought it would be worth checking now in case when I got to installing Windows it would not find the drive and I would be like 'omfg lol wut wherz the drif!!!!!111' :p

So what I plan to do is:
  • Format my old HDD
  • Enable AHCI mode in BIOS from IDE (what it is set at at the moment)
  • Physically install SSD and set HDD to a slave drive
  • Format SSD and install Windows 7
  • Install chipset drivers and Marvell SATA drivers from Asus' website
  • Install drivers from Intel's website
  • .....
  • profit!!!!11

That sound ok to everyone? :p
