£1200 - Dell Studio XPS 16 - with ssd?

tweakingfreak - the gfx card is soldered to the motherboard (not mxm :( ) so it cant be upgraded.

Everything else is really easy to upgrade

when I rang up they said there was a 9 day lead time on SSDs, I assume because of stock.

Fingers crossed it should go in to production around the 9th/10th of this month.

So impatient, i want it now - having to work from a old PC at work, and my computer at home is shafted. Hate having to stay late at the office to work when i could be doing it infront of the tv with my SSD'd laptop :)

Good deal no?

Not sure which way to turn at the moment?

For general gaming is the 1GB ATI® Radeon™ HD 4670 a better performer than the 3670 512mb?

Also Dell don't seem to say what resolution the display is on the 15.6" (inch) Truelife 720p HD WLED Edge to Edge Display? I'm assuming 1366x768

yes i beleive so.

if you want to get one, why not do this:
buy this:http://www.dmxdimension.com/recommend/N00X1602 add 256 SSD.

When it arrives, strip out the SSD, sell in auction site, then replace with normal HDD.

Overall cost:

£799(laptop) + £240(SSD upgrade) = £1039 - 5%(with voucher) = £987.05

sell SSD = £987.05 - £400 = £587.05
Replace HDD + £60
Total cost of ownership = £647!

Sounds ok but I can't stretch to the initial 1K to start with :(

I'm more inclined to opt for desktop real estate than I am gaming grunt so I think I'll go for the RGBLED screen I think....

I'm sure the 3670 512mb can handle CSS, COD4/5 with the res turned down and detail down......

Went for the RGBLED screen, 2.26ghz, 4gb DDR3, 3670HD 512mb, 320gb 7200rpm unit in the end...

Will post back thought's when it arrives, if anyone is interested?

Guys

Just got my XPS 16 whats the default (desktop res) for RGBLED screen? Just put W7 x64 on and the default res is currently 1366x768?

Suppose I need the latest drivers for 1920x1080

The default res is 1920x1080. Sounds like you havent got the RGB screen if you cant increase you res. Drivers wont make a difference, even on default W7 drivers it would pick up your native res

I thought as much

Thanks

You should be able to easily tell on an LCD screen if you aren't running at native resolution. There's no confusion at all.

Also when I was messing with Win7, until I installed graphics drivers it used something like 800x600 as the res when the native was 1680x1050. This was with a GTX 260M. I didn't check if it offered higher res prior to installing the drivers. Win7 does not detect your screens native res on installation, sorry ninja2000.

I think a clean Win7 install (you didn't get it preinstalled from Dell, thats for sure) WOULD select something in the region of 1366x768 as the standard res for a 1920 screen upon installation. Dell don't even offer an XPS16 with that resolution screen so it's hard to believe they scrounged one up just to wrongly install in your expensive laptop. I do hope you checked the available desktop resolutions before sending it back when it didn't adopt native res right away after a clean OS install. Why did you not just install the drivers in the first place.
