This is the main reason this illusion works. He said right at the start the BBC by law have to show the winning numbers first.

Lotto draw 1430
Draw date Sat 5 Sep 2009
anyone keep seeing birght white messages flashing up on the channel 4 show now?
sure i just saw 'fight'
cos it would boost his profile.
One fact, plain and simple: Derren Brown didn't predict the lottery tonight. There's a 13 million to one chance of me doing it, a 13 million to one chance of you doing it, and (believe it or not!!!) a 13 million to one chance of DB doing it.
Whatever he did, whatever you (think) you saw, and whatever he says or does on Friday, this fact remains true.
Watching his show, did people see the word 'forget' flash on the screen just before the add

EPIC FAIL!!!Note the jerky camera work throughout the draw. This was to cover up the fact that some clever visual trickery was employed to disguise the fact that the prediction podium was swapped out for one with the right numbers as the real balls fell out.
Was there any break before the numbers were revealed, even a cut to a zoomed in screen? I think there was, but can't quite remember. If so, then my idea is:
There are ~14million combinations with exactly 6 numbers correct. However there will be far fewer where he has to get 5 out of 6 (can't rememeber the maths). Whatever this number is, it is probably possible to record a separate 'ball revealing' shot for each one over the duration of a year if you're really reall dedicated (he claims this is a year's work). In this case when it cuts to the zoomed shot the appropriate recording is selected and broadcast.
Otherwise, something with mirrors and a split screen.
