Derren Brown - outdone himself this time?

Computer controlled camera mount so the frozen left image could be stabilised to the right side of the screen without too much hassle - cameraman who was operating the handheld switches the balls for the correct ones, frozen left side fades into live...

Tadaa...

Maybe...

i like this explanation, like someone said before there's a few things we can ask questions about:

Why does he have the pad for writting down the numbers ? (To waste time writing them down after all the balls are read out or to add to the effect at the end)
Why does the camera shake but at a certain point become perfectly still ?
Why did we only see the second camera man's shot once ?
Why wasn't anyone there to confirm the trick worked ?

It's all about viewings anyway, if channel 4 can get us all to watch the show on friday, they will find a way to make a lot of money advertising etc. Plus the more we talk about it and the papers do etc the more people will probably watch the show on friday.

Also like it has been said, the whole idea is not wow he did it, it's wow how did he do it. There's an explanation, i doubt we will get it from him but there is one.

If you look though, those balls are slighty squeezed into their frame/holder (the ball on the right starts out not quite resting on the base of the frame) - it's the ever so slight lack of space when he moves them that causes the other to move up.

That would be the logical (and boring :p) explanation and is quite plausible, but what causes the balls to re-settle themselves? Just pure chance? Surely if they were tightly packed in and were to resettle themselves then one would pop right out? They looked like pingpong balls.

just pasted this convo on OCUK
no one has realised that the tv is actually a blue screened image
thats easly one way to do it
Jake says:
lol noob lottery was live on tv at the same time tho
Andy says:
yes but
your not getting me
he stands perfectly still in the draw
so they can swap to a pre recorded image with the TV bluescreened live essensially
so its pre recorded but with the TV area cut out and blue screen placed there
then in real time the video from the bbc gets added
then all he has to do is at the end cut to him talking live after he knows the results
the balls have been changed accordingly
you get me bro ?

People are confusing being able to do it (ie being shown how to do it), and actually being able to do it.

If anyone's seen his other shows, such as The System, it's "possible" for the average person to also do that... but you couldn't, and wouldn't want to.

I'm just looking forward to Friday, any speculation of how he did it will be way off so :).

Maybe he doesn't want to listen to you because you keep calling him bro. You're one step away from turning into Jamie Oliver bruvva.

You're missing the point. I could do this, in 5 minutes, literally.

This is not the answer because it doesn't make two shows spanning an hour. And would discredit his abilities as a true showman.

Not legally allowed to, apparently.

Not legally allowed to show 6 numbers on television? damn all those adverts with telephone numbers on need notifying. :p

Like someone said earlier that is part of the illusion, otherwise everyone would just be asking "why didn't he just show them beforehand".

can anyone recognise the tv make model and check if he actually turns it on in the right place and it takes the same amount of time to "warm up".

There are clearly some delaying tactics at work at several places. He doesn't need to write the numbers on the board for example, it just wastes a few precious seconds. Also don't believe the carp about the bbc feed being limited etc for legal reasons. Think there is some hiding involved as well as he stands almost perfectly still the whole time with his hand over his mouth. Derren normally never stops moving during his shows.

Very impressive though and has had the desired effect in that about 20 million people will now ben tuning into channel 4 on Friday even if they missed it tonight as everyone will be on about it at work/school tomorrow.

andys derren brown lottery timeline - prerecorded with bbc stream being added via blue screen where tv is in real time (notice in the draw he dosent say anything specific due to this ) - balls are changed accordingly while the pre recording is shown - last few seconds it cuts with good editing and practice to derren and the balls all seeming like one fully live uninterupted uncut broadcast - derren brown seems to be god.

watch around 5:06-5:09, the left ball seems to raise up around 5:08. Before that time it's all level, after that time the left ball is definitely higher than the rest.

Yep, just rewatched it - watched the Youtube / 4oD and Sky + feeds and that balls definitely rises..

We will see on Friday though!!

I have the telly, yes it's the right place.

Why does the camera shake but at a certain point become perfectly still ?

Well he did say they're only allowed to show a couple of minutes of the BBC's broadcast, could be for licensing reasons, but he did write down the same as what was on the tv so it wasn't any misdirection when he was writing the numbers down.

With the camera shaking, it may be down to the camera being stabilised. I've used camera lenses with image stabilisation, they generally stop the smaller movements but larger shakes are still apparent.

The easiest way, as said would be using computers to overlay the image. If anything I'd say it'd make sense for the camera man to mount the camera on a tripod, and make it so the image broadcast was the centre 75% of the image. Thus the camera doesn't move so is very easy to overlay a static image, and then use a computer to shift around the frame that's being broadcast without going over the edge, to give it the impression that it's hand held still. If that makes sense :p

i think the legality comes from the confusion it may create in 'televising ' on a rival channel a series of numbers very well connected to the national lottery. the confusion being that if he got it wrong , its 'officialness' due to it being televised on a popular terrestrial channel , may throw people who have bought tickets, and lead them to wrongly assume that the ch4 numbers are the winning ones, and thus make 'some' people think they have won when they have not.

I'm amazed people actually believe he's predicted the lotto results. He's an illusionist, he has presented the illusion that he has predicted the results. There is absolutely no way the correct numbers were written on those balls before the draw took place, therefore there must have been some kind of camera/footage trick. The point is the illusion itself, not how it was created.

Other people have said the TV was in time with the live lottery results. So how did they add the BBC stream via blue screen in time?

Oh, please. If you had spent the best part of a year obsessing about and preparing for something, would you not be a little nervous as it was happening?

I don't think anyone in this thread does. And if that was the point of the illusion is going to be pretty rubbish because in two days he's going to tell us how he did it.
