ps3 on watchdog next week!

But the reworking of the ball grid array usually does it. In the earlier PS3 models there wasn't enough thermal compound either, which wouldn't help.

They admitted themselves that 4 of the 11 they fixed have now broken again. The oven trick is no more than a temporary fix that is also used with the 360.

Essentially, what they were claiming is that repairing the consoles is as easy as whipping them in an oven for a few minutes and that Sony shouldn't be charging for it.

Just checked Twitter to see what people thought of it and some people have said Sony are sueing the Beeb?

Plus, she said the PS3 costs £400. Where? Maybe at release but no one pays that nowadays.

What awful reporting - and that's coming from someone who has both consoles and prefers neither. Wonder when the RROD report is coming now... Touching wood, housemate and I have two PS3s here, neither has failed (one launch, the other an 80gb). We both also had 360s, one has failed. At least MS admitted to the 54% faillure rate :)

54% doesn't surprise me. What usually happens is the xclamps bend the board when it heats up and cools down and the BGA under the CPU and GPU becomes inconstant. It's so poorly designed.
The only way to fix it is either to heat it up (like they did with the PS3s on watchdog), so remelt the solder and hope to remake the conections or to remove the chip and use a machine to place it back on (they cost £100k+ though, we tried them out at work).

It's hit and miss with the 360. Once you've removed the xclamps the board doesn't bend as much and can last quiet a while.

The testing concerned a sample of only three PS3s, which cannot, on any basis, be deemed to be representative of a UK user base of 2.5 million. One of these had in addition been materially altered by the owner. SCEUK has run searches of its customer complaints/warranty database to identify the number of reports made to it regarding instances of system shutdown or failure in circumstances where the front panel yellow indicator is illuminated. The results show that of all PS3s sold in the UK to date, fewer than one half of one per cent of units have been reported as failing in circumstances where the yellow indicator is illuminated.

Importantly, it is clear that third party repairers will profit from any public concern that is raised about the reliability of the PS3, and have an interest in criticising SCEUK's after sales service (despite the relatively small price differential in their own service offering). The BBC will therefore doubtless wish to exercise caution before relying on anecdotal evidence, provided by them, concerning the extent or cause of these issues.

I regret to say that neither the correspondence to date, nor the 'PlayStation Repair Action Team 'stunt, have given me much confidence that you are treating this issue fairly. If the report is broadcast in what appears to be its current form, SCEUK will scrutinise its accuracy and will take all necessary steps to protect its reputation and that of the PS3.

I don't think sony are too happy about this! Looks like they have some valid points.

they didnt really say much, other than that it looks like most PS3's have the same problem which looks fairly easy to fix, and that if you are within the 1 year warranty sony should replace it for free otherwise you need to pay

Which pretty much all of which is untrue.

The YLOD is not just one fault. It's caused by one of several things.

For instance, one of my consoles got the YLOD from corrupted firmware.

I think that was about the lowest episode of Watchdog ever made. Seriously, it used to be just about ok. I mean, the whole labelling of that healer as a "rogue trader"! wtf? He believed he could help people and was hardly charging much. Big deal bbc wow you pwned him good.

As for the PS3 bit, train wreck television. I think they have underestimated the sort of reaction they might get from Sony and, more importantly, the sony fanboys on this one. It actually wasn't any better than a 360 fanboy youtube video trying to attack the PS3 on minor faults. When the narrator mentioned that the guy outside Sony HQ was "usually too busy on his xbox" it was kinda said in a tone that was really suggesting Microsoft had the superior console or something. Quite shocking and I bet there is a big reaction to this on the tubes.

ye, i thought that,

they had their own team repairing ps3's and all they did was put the console into a specialist oven which slightly melts the solder and fixes any broken connections.
that fixed all of the consoles they tried

After reading the SCEUK letter from here
http://www.gmrfm.com/home/2009/9/17/sonys-letter-to-bbcs-watchdog.html

I absolutely hope with all my heart that Sony come down like a ton of bricks onto the BBC. It's absolute unfounded nonescence where even the guy testing says he can't say for sure there is a fault.

Utter tripe, Watchdog and the BBC has suddenly turned into the Daily Mail.

Just blame it on the Muslim Gays and say Labour are also to fault.

Why he was only telling the truth of course :p lol joking, by reading this thread I can honestly say that if the BBC get sued for this then good. I own both PS3 n 360 I go through phases of prefering each I'm currently on the 360 but luckily I've never had anything happen to my ps3 so touch wood it will never happen. Think it's bit unfair of sony's repair services costing so much but it would be cool if sony started offering the 5er a month service again so we can sign up at will.

I think the bbc are in trouble here. but remember guys if sony do sue the bbc, its the licence fee payers who will foot the bill,

what a load of tripe, it didnt prove anything other than u can sometimes fix them by cooking it,

I think the real question they should have asked Sony should have followed on from Sony's final statement they said at the end...

Something along the lines of:
"We believe it only affects a small number of our user base, we believe a one year warranty is the standard for electronic goods in the industry, within this time we will repair it"

Well surely what they should have then said is... the Xbox, which has had more problems offers a three year warranty, why can't Sony match that level of service?

They did answer it when they said

It doesn't say much about the confidence in your product though does it, if you do end up with a faulty machine and then have to splash out £120 to get it fixed.

If you own neither consoles and saw that article on the BBC (say an uninformed parent) you would probably buy the Xbox instead, especially backed up by a better warranty.

Whilst i agree that giving a longer warranty would be good, it is the way watchdog have critisised sony without providing a shread of evidence to back thier allegations up that im gonna side with sony on this one
