Digg.com - Modern Warfare 2 boycott.

Okay, but who's going to want to play an fps where their friends can customize everything, weapon stats, characters, badges, where their friends can make strategies in 'rooms' that you can't enter because you haven't bought it, where the rest of their clan is having scrims but you can't because you haven't bought the leagues.

There'll basically be no point in playing if you can't do what everyone else can. It would be like playing an MMO and being capped at level 20 when there's 80 levels. You can play it, but you want to play the full game with everyone else.

Exactly. How much money has MW2 made for them already? Do you really think that they would mess with such a huge money maker?

If they did pay to play then there would be a real boycott of the game. It just isnt going to happen, end of story!

Why wouldn't they? If everyone has already bought it, what harm will pay to play MP do? If everyone doesn't like it, they won't care, they already have your money from the first sale anyway.

If it kills off the MP, so what, just say 'oh we won't do that again', release MW3 and watch everyone jizz themselves silly and chuck another £35-£40 at a virtually identical game again.

Don't kid yourself, this is the perfect title to try this on because as we demonstrated nicely - we just can't contain ourselves and people will throw money at it regardless. If they eventually hit the point where people no longer want to throw money at MW2, move on to MW3.

Now that is being naive, they already messed with it to include IWNET so they can make more money selling DLC. What makes you think they won't do it again to sell subscription services?

Because their main market is the console and there isnt enough content in a FPS to warrent a monthly fee other than DLC, which is an optional extra.

I will be the first to admit im wrong if it happens but im confident it wont.

I dont even think that would be legal to change the MP of a game that you have already purchased and make it pay to play. They would get sued. If it was a seperate game they could but i doubt that is going to happen.

I might be wrong but I think others are using 'pay to play' to encompass everything that will effectively pressure you into paying extra, such as what was mentioned before in not having all the same features as your mates etc.

I don't think they could ever feasibly make pay monthly work with an FPS like this.

Even so though, as those destructoid pictures hint at, they could very easily employ a pay monthly system that just provides extras (but extras some will see as essential, like clan play support) so wouldn't prevent people playing what was sold with the game, merely pressure them into paying extra.

Well we would soon find out the thick people would are willing to pay extra for what they could have got for free if they did. If other people had an advantage over me from paying for extra things in the game then I wouldnt touch it with a barge pole. They might think about it but it would be an end to an era if they did it.

Removing dedicated servers could be viewed in much the same way (end of an era), yet people clearly still lined up and couldn't buy it fast enough, even those who said they wouldn't, which is what makes this the perfect platform to try these things, it obviously has some weird hold over people and they can't resist it.

Activision have said, there will be some sort of monetization scheme tried out, it's just a case of exactly what really.

Really? So you have to chip a PC in the same way? It's not just install via ISO and crack? Lol!

you think people that build PCs will have problems following youtube guides on how to mod your console so you can play your backed up games?

I think if theres one thing that just got shown, its that they can do anything and ignore any 'boycott' threats.

I dont think removing dedicated servers is enough to boycott a game. Especially as its still a good game to play. But it would be totally different if they started charging pay to play. I wouldnt go as far as saying I would boycott it out of principle I just wouldnt be interesting in subscribing to a FPS MMO. Does appeal to me. I think FPS'ers are about jumping into a game and having a blast with friends.

the lite on drives require special hardware to flash. well it makes life a lot easier ;)

Probably not, but when the hardware fails and the warranty is invalid due to opening the case or their console gets banned from Live (as many just have been) i can't see any guide helping them out.

Bans happen once a year right? 360 is pretty cheap these days and considering games cost like 50-60 pounds, I'd say it makes sense to buy a console every year and play all the "backups" you want, comes out much cheaper in the end.

As for Call of Duty, removing dedicated servers was HUGE, it was a huge step and a test and looks like it paid off, people are buying the game, don't be surprised if they release a standalone online game with a subscription service and be even less surprised when people buy it and start paying a monthly fee to play.

The problem with the online gaming is that it drags you in, when your friends buy it and play it, you will feel left out and you will buy it too even though you might be against it, it's hard to fight mass market and most people will just throw money at anything without researching it first.

Yes but the point is, it will be a NEW game unlike what some think on here. Its not going to be MW2. I am sure that people will buy it but I doubt they would make the same money. The console people are different to pc gamers, they wont play a monthly sub and thats the market they have focused on with the latest release.

lol I think the console people are more willing to be rimmed and throw money at the cod franchise than the PC market. I think if MW3 was released in 18 months as monthly sub, consolers wouldn't hesitate to buy into it.

you can get 3/6/12 month cards of XBL, plus the whole points scam. Xbox owners are bent over backwards by MS yet they still lap it up, IW/Activision are just trying to do the same.
