What was before the Big Bang?

Consider this:

The universe as we know it is a 4d entity that exists due the physical laws which define it. In other words length, width, depth, and time flowing forward make the universe as we see it now. Without these basic dimensions it wouldn't exist. Consider as well that it is generally well known that nature abhors a vacuum.

It would be reasonable to assume that what existed before the big bang or outside the "boundries" of our ever expanding universe is "nothing". Not just the "nothing" that is the space between stars were only a few particles drift about, but really nothing. As in a total lack of physical law. The physical laws which define our universe abhor this vacuum and rush outward at the speed of light to fill it. Hence the universe expanding.

Consider a "void" without physical law. Really think about it. It has no dimensions, the key dimension being time. Without time does something really have to have a beginning? Does something have to have a definable start when it exists outside of any law which regulates time?

So I would put forth that the void I suspect "surrounds" the universe in whatever state it is in is eternal, constant and has always been there as it isn't contstrained by time. No god needed.

In other words, completely hypothetical. It amazes me the completely bonkers ideas that keep coming up, M Theory being the latest, when there are much more realistic explanations.
You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, do you? M-Theory is as "hypothetical" as Newton's theory of mavity, of Maxwell's electromagnetism. They are all theoretical models for phenomena that occur in the world around us.

What amazes me, is how uninformed individuals feel qualified to comment on the worth of the most advanced scientific theories ever developed by man, whilst armed with nothing more than Wikipedia and bucket load of ignorance.

After reading this thread, I think I understand why people believe it god....

Mainly because it doesn't give you a bloody headache.

And I take it you are more qualified to comment? Honestly, lets not have a geek off. I'm allowed my own theory and am free to express it. Its not as though I'm sending it in to a scientific journal for publishing.

It seems my theory of what 'may' have been is quite commonly accepted. It certainly doesn't make it ignorant or uninformed.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. It matters very little either way. :Yawn-NoOneCares:

This reminds me of an interesting thought i had a while ago, if you take the age of the earth and sun which is about 4.5 billion years old versus the age of the universe which is about 13.5 billion years old, it appears we have come into existence right around the beginning of the universes life which is pretty incredible when you think about it, we could have evolved near the middle or end but here we are at the beginning, presuming the universe has billions to trillions of years of life left in it (energy, stars forming etc), it will probably go on for such a long time after its stopped being liveable however, i believe thats the current view, but it probably has some big surprises in store like galaxy's giving birth to new galaxy's and regeneration through currently unknown processes.

I thought about this too, it seems too convenient to be around near the beginning of the universe...

Is consciousness the most amazing thing in existence or is the physical universe more amazing? the universe would essentially be meaningless and not exist in a sense without conscous observers, on the other hand conscious observers with nothing to observe would exist in a void knowing only their awareness.

Also another interesting thought, could there be something as amazing as consciousness but completely different and unique somehow? A bit like we have 5 known senses, could there be other unique ones?
