OCuK L4D2 server rant.

No, I wouldn't be that bothered. It's a public game. If someone takes your spot then it's tough luck. I've never seen in the rules that you must leave if everyone is telling you just because you took someone's spot accidently. It's all getting very cliquey and rather petty. I don't remember L4D being like this.

Fair enough if you wouldn't be bothered but most people on here would be so that is the rule we've adopted. There isn't an exhaustive list of server rules - it's mostly just common sense.

It's hardly "cliquey". If you join the game and get dropped it would be expected that someone wouldn't take your place either. Everyone tries to be considerate to others, not just people they're friends with.

Why the hell has this thread turned into semantics regarding 'stealing' a spot.

Viper since when is this L4D specific? If i crash and someone ninja's my spot i'd want it back in if it was a friends game. Public, who cares, Friends, your obliged to leave, refusing to do so is frankly rude and the other 3/7/15 players are obliged to kick you, be it ingame or admin. This can be L4D, CS:S, TF2, Quake, MW, i don't care which. It doesn't have to be a rule.

Well that just isn't the way the Ocuk games work lad. Especially if no one wants you there. (which is nothing personal BTW) This applies to every server on L4D, not just Ocuk. Yeah sometimes in the past someone has nicked someone else's spot and played till the end with no questions asked, but if everyone is asking you to leave and you don't, then you're just being a stubborn petty ass and deserve to get kicked IMO. Do you turn up to parties uninvited and have to be thrown out the front door? Take it on the chin, stop being selfish and find another game. Yeah it sucks to be unwanted in a game, but that's what we have all encountered on an Ocuk L4D game sometime in the past. It's no big deal.

I've never seen in the rules that you must leave if everyone is telling you just because you took someone's spot accidently.

It isn't in the rules lad, It doesn't need to be because all the regulars know it's good sportsmanship. Frankly if i turn up uninvited and everyone is asking me to leave, there is no way i would have the cheek to turn round and say "NO YOU MUST ALL PLAY WITH ME OR LEAVE". I mean how can you be a decent team player if you are so damn stubborn?

It's all getting very cliquey and rather petty. I don't remember L4D being like this.

No it isn't. Nothing has changed at all in that respect. Most of us know each other since november 2008. Most of us know how these situations are dealt with except for you and Tummy (the uninvited people) You were hardly a regular on L4D1, so how would you know its getting petty?

@ Viper: L4D1 and L4D2 spot rules have ALWAYS been like this in OcUK. When we first started playing it was the same as now. You are asked politely to leave, however if the other person never returns I always bear that person in mind to ask back if they would like. I usually ask BEFORE joining an ocuk game if the person crashed so it rarely happens that I'm asked to leave, but if it does I will (and I joint own most of the servers, so I could be a real **** about it ;)).

@ Tummy: You have me on your friends list so I'll talk to you in person about the issues and see if I can get to the root of the problem. Please note that only ONE of my own named servers is actually private, OcUK 3, the other (OcUIK 4) is a public server. If you get kicked from that again for no good reason let me know through steam and I'll reset the server :p

@ Luw: "Evil server dictator..." :p

I play on the OcUK server exclusively and have never ever seen you in a single game. Which regulars do you normaly jump in with?

Spot system is also a good system. L4D series is so buggy that you'd never get a full game without a bit of courtesy from everyone else.

Ok, I will make this as clear as possible:

1) When someone crashes out they should be allowed back in (within reason)

If a player gets disconnected, crashes to desktop, steam logon issues, anything that knocks them out of a game, then it's OcUK group etiquette to allow them back into the game. Period. Always been this way and I imagine it will remain this way.

For public games then who cares? it's a public game. But while we play with friends/people we know we always step down for the player that was just kicked out.

The only time I would argue the case of the guy who stole the spot is if the other player who dced took more than 5-10 minutes to get back into the game. In my opinion after such a long time they should consider their place forfeit and step down for the player that came in after them. You have to set limits somewhere and if you crash out and need to reboot it still wouldn't take more than a few minutes to return.

2) OcUK Admins do not kick people without reason

I'm an admin on the OcUK servers and don't think i've ever had to kick anyone who wasn't crashed out (kick them to let them back in quicker). I have also only seen an admin kick another player once, and that was because the player kept making votes to return to lobby for no good reason.

Frankly I think this is a case of your playing on the public servers and the players vote kicking yo ass!

3) Try to play with other OcUK players in arranged games

I can speak from experience here when I say that the best thing to do is to befriend as many regular OcUK players as possible and try to get in the same games/lobbies as them. The games are always more fun, people don't rage quit, and you can be sure your team won't kick you for no reason.

4) Wear the OcUK tag

A lot of newer players about and it would be good to see more people wearing the [OcUK] tag so it's easier to identify other OcUK players.

5) Practice/Listen to your team

All important one really, in order to be a half valuable team player you need to play a bit and get used to the game and how to work as a team, but also communication is key. Having a microphone/headset is very important but also being able to use it properly as well :P

The more you play the better you get :p

I try to play at least once a night now if I can but before I used to play a few times a week which wasn't good for building up skills....though now it has improved!

I have passed on the team burn lergies to midnight :p

Hi Tummy,

I'm the other server admin (Defrag) who owns OcUK 7 and joint admin for the LinkTart (owned by Link to Insanity and FrenchTart) and Link to Insanity servers.

Take it from me that the Admins take their responsibility seriously (Both server owners and sub-admins) in ensuring that the servers are kept up-to-date, used frequently and more importantly used responsibly. We take time out from our lifes to provide these servers so that we can all benefit from them and as such a nice community spirit has been developed over the past year or so.

In all that time I've never seen anyone irresponsibly kicked or been the victim of Admin abuse and would be surprised to hear otherwise. Having owned a server for about 6 months now i've only had to kick and ban two people for being racist and generally abusing the other players - making peoples game a misery - we don't need players like that (and they were warned beforehand as well).

General rule of thumb amoung'st Admins is to ask politely, ask again and then do something about it if the player is unresponsive (e.g. has jumped into a players spot when they crashed/dc'd etc and refuses to leave). In all cases they have been warned/asked beforehand.

Like Link and FrenchTart have said, give us some screenshots, times, player names etc so we have something to go on - but I would be very surprised to see anyone abusing the system - afterall, we are a like minded bunch of people who only want to enjoy playing L4D/2. :D

Personally i haven't ever kicked someone or even seen one of the other admins abusing their powers (unless defrag deserved it ;))

1. I'd like to see you try kicking me!
2. I'd like to see you try kicking me!

and

3. I could kick you, but its more fun making you rage within a couple of minutes playing agains't me :D

I've also had the same issue, but couldn't be bothered to mention it at the time. I don't have the exact details, like which game i was playing or what time, but it was definitely an OCUK server, and as soon as i joined the game, a vote war run to kick me off, then i got booted and was refused entry when i re-tried as i'd been banned.

I think you're autobanned for a few minutes after being kicked to preventing you from just jumping right back in. It's not permanent though.

I could be wrong on this though.

4) Wear the OcUK tag

A lot of newer players about and it would be good to see more people wearing the [OcUK] tag so it's easier to identify other OcUK players.
I wasn't aware the OcUK tag was FFA.... I'll have to dump it on to look cooler ;) Guess it helps people identify me as someone from ocuk rather than a random who was invited by a random invited by an ocuk player (we get a lot more of that than I would like... silly randoms)

Yeah, I remember using it when first jumping on so as people knew where I was coming. Might be an idea to use them again for the early days of L4D2. (has the benefit of bumping me to nearly the top of everyone's list as well :D)

I must say, the L4D2 community in general seems a bit intolerant :p. (Publics, rather than OcUK, that is).

As well as rage quitting, people will kick others for anything. Been vote kicked for being bottom of the scoreboard a round, even been kicked for being Chinese (racist Scottish git inexcusable in itself, but I'm not - I just have Chinese characters in my name).

Pleasant bunch :p.

BTW, is anyone finding Steam group servers will sometimes disappear from the listing?
