I once said I was too sick to come in (was on last dose of antibiotics) to my old Woolies job (about 6 years ago now) so they said I didn't have to come in.
I then felt better that night so went out with friends, only to bump into my manager and assistant manager at the bar
They didn't mind thankfully, and my boss even told me to "shut the **** up and carry on drinking!"

'You've got egg on your face' is a (very) old expression which means you have embarressed yourself / made a fool of yourself.
