Unmarried couples caught in Malaysia hotel raids

Illegal to have sex with someone you are not married too.
[..]

It appears to be illegal to be close to a person of a different sex without a chaperone unless they are your spouse or a close enough relative, on the grounds that it might lead to something sexual. Not just in Malaysia, either. Other Islamic theocracies have similar laws.

In some ways it's a chicken and egg situation.... in western culture, you typically think "OK, I now know and like that person. So we'll get married". Whereas in some cultures, it may be a case of "I want to get to know that person better, and the route to doing that, is by getting married".

But the religion frowns on divorce. So basically you get one shot at picking your wife, and you have to hope you like her, because you cant get to know her beforehand, as thats illegal, and you cant bin her if you dont like her.

And you... try and justify that?

There are so many things wrong with this statement its ridiculous.
Firstly your arguing a system that allows you the freedom to argue the system, which is awfully contradictory.
Secondly, the only real laws that apply to people here are ones that keep the peace between people and state, if you feel the need to keep up your own customs and traditions, you are not banned from doing so and you may practice them to your hearts content, as long as they do no cause conflicting problems with people or state. (I think its called freedom)
In fact in many cases it is encouraged.
( I would love to know what is banned in this country that is a tradition or custom, that does not conflict with human rights and common sense).

haha nice Von(I only post to be controversial)helmet just got destroyed :p

Well, you can talk with the person your parents pick for you as a potential spouse, within limits and with supervision.

How absurd, don't they respect the freedom of choice?
You mean like we respect the freedom of people who choose to sell drugs?
Or we respect their right to have sex in front of a primary school?

When you go go another country you fall under their laws, if you break them and get caught it's tough luck, you're going to be dealt with under their legal system.

Even the US has some fairly odd laws as far as we're concerned (jaywalking for example), different countries have different ideas of what should be legal, and what shouldn't be (or even just what is acceptable, and what isn't).

Bascially I have zero sympathy for anyone who goes to another country, and breaks the law there, especially when anyone with any sense knows how seriously they take some things.

So just claim not to be muslim and court and return to a slightly more sane life?

But they may actually want to be muslim... It's sort of like a stronger version of someone fining you every time you smoke, but you have asked them to do it...

so let me get this right.

western countries on the whole will go out of their way to accommodate the different beliefs and cultures of others but not vice versa?

if thats the case then we shouldnt allow muslim women to wear veils and bring back school nativity amongst others.

No, not in the slightest, it's only the muslims that are affected, if you are not muslim (either a Malay national or tourist) then this law doesn't apply to you. So it's actually like muslim women being allowed to wear a veil and non muslim women not.

The only thing that needs to be made illegal is Islam. Its too easy for muslims to justify extreme behavior because "Mohammad said so."

What was it Billy Connolly said? "Never trust a person with only one book" ....or it might have been Inigo Balboa Aguirre :p

I feel I should pick up on this point. My objection to this is an objection to their culture. I could disagree more with the concept of a theocratic body, let alone a fascist theocratic government as seen in almost every middle eastern country. It's a ridiculous thing to compare us to them, like for like. We live in a culture and a society that is centuries more advanced and evolved than that of Malaysia, or Iran for example. Our laws are a hundred times more moral, more equal, and in my opinion, outright better.

My problem is with the theocratic culture as a whole, not individual cases of it.

Yet the problem is the people and govenment in Malaysia (and especially) in Iran think exactly the same about our culture... The Iranians especially consider their culture and society to be far more advanced and older than ours.

I know its the culture, etc etc, but how does any of this make sense to anybody rational?

How can you honestly be expected to decide if you wish to marry somebody without ever being alone with them!? Surely love is a natural thing and they are going against that? I just do not understand why people with these sort of ideals are given any sort of credibility.

It's just bonkers
It's possible to marry someone without being alone with them!

Reminds me of what Wafa Sultan talks about in this video. :)

What an amazing woman, sent that moronic **** back to the darkages where he belongs. Those types of muslims have no place in modern civilization IMO and we need more people like her to come out and tell them how it is.

Couples are matched on other factors than just "love"

There's a great many laws i find wrong in the west as well, it's just stuff like that goes way beyond what's acceptable when viewed from a more 'civilised' society, the freedom of choice is pretty darn simple and if every human lived by it the world would be a very different place, the freedom of choice means you can do anything you want as long as it doesn't negatively affect another's freedom of choice, going against it is incredibly stupid as you'd only be trashing your own freedom of choice equally as a result, reason we have laws that lock people up for stealing and killing etc, the laws that go beyond reason are the ones that affect this freedom of choice when someone is not negatively affecting another persons.

They do, you can either be a muslim and not have sex before marriage or you can decide not to be a muslim and have as much sex before marriage as you want...

Huh, how is that logical?

Religion amounts to a belief system so if they want to go along with the original they can, but if they wish to view it any other way they like then thats their choice, i don't see how there can be laws for one belief system and different ones for another.

Yea because its that easy to just not be a Muslim

I know, however you follow a faith then you should follow it not just pick and choose. You do however have a choice, if you are muslim then you shouldn't have sex before marriage, which if you are breaking you are not a proper muslin anyway.

Tell this to the so called Muslims here in the UK that drink alcohol and fall prey to the occasional bacon sarnie. Many Muslims are just like other religious followers - they pick and choose the parts of faith they want to follow. Human nature for you.
