*** Official Mass Effect 2 Thread ***

Nov '07 was the Xbox release date followed by PC in May '08 from wiki, so they've had quite a while to work on it, chances are they were already considering and possibly working on the expansion before they even released it though.

Those starting benefits are very excessive imo... can't say for sure how much of an effect they'll have till you play it but other than the paragon/renegade and starting level they shouldn't of included anything else. 130k starting cash is a huge amount if you presume things are similarly priced to ME1. Can't really say for the Minerals but i suspect 10k is enough to get you started quite comfortably.

I'm considering, given those starting benefits, to play through with a new character in ME2 to begin with. Seems like it might spoil the pacing slightly, plus i can save my lvl60 Biotic for the Insanity playthrough :p

Really? You couldn't buy a top end gun or suit of armour from the first game for 130k.

Top end no, but you could get some extremely good gear. It was 250k for the VII (or VIII) Spectre gear i think and that price is well above most stuff. Don't forget prices more or less increased exponentially, you could kit out your entire squad in maybe III-V gear for that amount of money in ME or get some seriously good VI-VII gear for 1 player. It would easily keep you going for maybe 2/3 of the playthrough.

And yeah thats kinda the problem i think if you play through on a lvl60 char on the first trip i think. The bonus' seem a lot if you compare it to the first game and it might mess up the pacing early game considerably. Think i'll hold off importing until my second trip.

Weapons and armor are quite a bit different in this game so i dont think that will be much of a problem. Im still slightly dissapointed that the bonuses are so large for imported characters(i didnt want a level bonus). I will probably still import my lv60 just because i spent a fair few hours getting him solely so i could import to ME2

*sigh* The Soldier on ME1 wouldn't suck so much if the AI was even half good. There is just something fundamentally broken about being rushed by 2 Krogans and 1-3 other foes all at the same time early game. Only large amounts of Biotics are of any use stopping these suicide tactics.

I only hope the AI is improved enough that Soldier is playable.

Agreed, though from the ME2 playthoughs it looks a lot better.

There were parts of ME1 where you'd be rushed by a half-dozen Geth rocket troopers, each capable of a one hit kill. Without a biotic packing singularity it was pot luck if you survived the encounter.

I'm with Reeve. I really didn't want a +level bonus, but I put in the time getting to 60 so I'm going to import it. The odd bit of recognition from NPCs or a fun side-quest and I would have been happy. I'm just going to feel like I'm cheating a bit.

Oh Lordy. A 9.6 score. I was just going to rent it on 360 but I know I won't be able to resist come next Friday when I (likely) won't have it and get Bayonetta on my doormat instead. Steam... steam... steam...

Indeed, it feels as if they never actually tested Soldier on higher difficulties, or if they did, merely rationalised that if you don't pack a full biotic with you then you can't win. Even Tech powers are worthless, you destroy the shields, they put up Immunity and you can't kill them, you overheat the weapons they switch. The only way to win is to have them bouncing off the walls with Biotics.

Why is everyone so hung up about the level? The level requirements increase each level so all you've done is skip the earlier ones, unless reaching level 5 really does take a while i can't see it making much difference. The real difference is going to come from the Cash/Mineral benefits, it'll give you such a huge advantage if you can research some stuff straight off and buy much better gear, it might ruin the pacing for continueing characters.

Do you have to be level 50 to get those bonuses? I'm only level 49 on my initial playthough, is it worth doing a little bit more to get the extra level?

Nobody bar bioware(and the people who reviewed/downloaded it) know how much money things will cost in the game or how easy it is to earn money/resources. It could be that the material and money bonus is insignificant and can be earned within a few hours of starting.

IIRC lv30 is the max level in this game which is why getting lv5 from the get go is more of a big deal than it would appear. Its not like everyones hung up about it, only me and cutshaw mentioned it

I ordered on steam, will play vanilla first, hate this "preorder and get bonuses" crap that seems to be the norm these days. Anyway ME2 will rock and that`s the only thing that really matters :)
