James Cameron's 'Avatar' - The next gen of cinema

Saw this last night at the iMax:

First impressions were fantastic, it was our first 3D experience and an overly impressive one at that. However, before long I was feeling the effects of motion sickness which resulted in my eyes closed for nearly half of it. I basically saw the beginning and end :D

Visually beautiful movie in every way, thoroughly impressed. Just an experience ruined by feeling sick. GF also felt sick by the end, unfortunately.

I think I'll see it on a regular screen now, at least that way I won't be stuck on the second row, practically right infront of the screen with a sore neck beaten by people that got there an hour before the movie starts. :p
 
I thought it was a great action film although not the classic a lot of people have been calling it. The 3D effects were truly stunning at first but I soon forgot about them after getting over the initial wow factor. The story, as a lot of people have mentioned, was pretty generic and instantly forgettable but the action sequences were some of the best I've ever seen. While not a film I could watch over and over again I'll certainly be buying it on Blu-ray when it becomes available.

Edit: Forgot to mention the 3D glasses. They were horrifically uncomfortable and left two little bruises on the bridge of my nose. Didn't like them at all.

Finally saw the IMAX 3D version at Printworks, Manchester.

The 3D lost it's WOW factor after a few minutes leaving an empty and predictable film. Maybe I was expecting too much, I don't know. I noticed a lot of motion blur as well.

Would love to know how that equates to bums on seats. Do viewing figures get recorded in a similar fashion at all?
 
Gone with the Wind certainly did good business in the USA, when it was released in cinemas. I didn't quite realise that it did so well.

I'm used to seeing films like Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Titanic up there, so its surprising to see the likes of The Graduate, in the upper echelons of that list.
 
Don't forget it's only in its what, 6th week?

Titanic ran for 12 weeks before setting its record - I see no reason why Avatar won't keep going strong for another 6 weeks at least :)

Something to bear in mind is that cinema was *massive* in the 1930s, 1940s pre-television era - the weekly cinema attendance was something like 80 million, 65% of the population at the time. Crazy numbers really. I think it had theatrical re-releases 3, maybe 4 times over the following 40 years or something too :)
