Good to see the french doing something about the burka.
Why do these women want to wear a sand mask in the UK?

Yeh brilliant isnt it??..they dont agree with oppressed women ie the burkha etc etc but yet feel fit to repress women to not wear ie banning it.

Way to go France...that will really make things better there with all that resentment bubbling up.

I dont have an issue with women wearing it...personally i dont agree with it but hey who am i to TELL people what they can and cant wear;).

I have to love the way that the french act in a way that is so fundamentally opposed to their proclaimed 'secular' society.

Because it's part of their culture.

Hmmm no

"This type of dress has its origins with desert times long before Islam arrived. It had two functions. Firstly as a sand mask in windy conditions.
This would be worn by men and women and is still common today"

So why don't the men wear them then?

Who cares? Why did the guy opposite me on the train this morning want to wear a baseball cap? It's not sunny, he's not playing baseball. Maybe he's trying to disguise his identity. We should ban baseball caps just to be sure...

Well you don't see many london train bombers wearing base ball caps
but they did wear a burka which on it's own is a good reason to ban them.

Oh, what's that that guy in the middle is wearing? Is it a baseball cap? I think it is.

Is there a burka in sight? No I don't believe there is.

Is that deeply inconvenient for the point you wanted to make - yes I think it is.

Oh and banning harmless things because terrorists occassionally use them is the stupidest thing in the world. It's giving in to them and achieving their aims for them as we watch our civil liberties taken from us.

Lets ban balaclava's too while we're at it, the IRA used them.

Those who completely cover themselves should be forced to actually learn their faith and stop letting the men taking advantage of them.

No it shouldn't be banned, but those wearing it should be forced to adhere to policies for items like crash helemts and balaclavas in places like banks ,etc.

Most reasonable answer, your face should be clearly viewable entering Banks/libraries/schools.

Granted, I haven't seen that many london train bombers, but from what I remember the ones filmed on CCTV before the July 21st bombings weren't wearing burkas. Neither were any of the terrorists involved in the hijackings preceding the attack on the twin towers. From what I remember, the only time I've seen reputed 'terrorists' wearing burkas is during self-recorded films criticising western culture and threatening retribution. I don't think a burka ban is gonna bother them that much.

Freedom of religion and choice should always take precedence and that is why I couldn't support a ban on the niquab.

I can't help think that it is a matter of ignorance for some.

By that I mean how many people look at a Muslim in burkha and niquab and assume she may be strapped with explosives ? I would wager quite a few.

I don't think people are worried about explosives, the government may be trying to instill fear and uncertainty but let's not give them too much credit. When most people see a burkha, they see a symbol of an invasive, alien culture with little redeeming qualities.

ban them and limit the building of mosques and while we are at it stop giving halal options to convicts sorry you commit a crime you forgo any special needs and get the same as everybody else.

No they are a small minority in this country yet seem to be able to monopolize the media, political agenda and just make a dam nuisance of themselves.
They 'monopolise the media [and] political agenda' because of Islamic extremism, the vast majority of Muslims have absolutely nothing to do with this.

Well they should do more to root this evil out, from where I see it they don't seem to be very forthcoming with the details of radical members of their communities.
