Hmmm no

"This type of dress has its origins with desert times long before Islam arrived. It had two functions. Firstly as a sand mask in windy conditions.
This would be worn by men and women and is still common today"

So why don't the men wear them then?.

Because it's no longer part of their culture for men to wear them?

Around the time of Elizabeth the first, it was common place for men to wear make-up as well. Now it's only women. Cultures change, some more than others and in different ways too.

Good grief. Nice selective quoting too...

Someone wanted to know where it came from, they got an answer. Would you kindly not make snide insinuations? It's a piece of clothing...if it was bikinis in public being put up for a possible ban, would you agree? I doubt it.

I was reading the photo booth instructions the other day "sad i know" :p. But it advised to remove all head gear etc unless for religious purposes. This got me thinking, so it's perfectly legal to have a passport/drivers with said lady wearing a burka? :p???

I'm not sure it is allowed for those purposes...

I think you can have a head covering, like on top of your head, say a Jewish skull cap or an Islamic headscarf, but not a full on ninja mask.

Wasn't their a case a couple of years ago where a man (possibly involved in an honour killing, I can't remember) fled to Pakistan on his sister's passport because he wore a burka/niqab? It's ridiculous the lengths we go to not to offend religious people.

Yep.

First newspaper article I could find on it, before anyone moans about the Daily Wail link.

Again, nothing to do with the dress but to do with the incompetance of airport security,
they are suppose to check the ID of the person regardless who it is, if said person does not want to do it in front of others they can go to a side and do it with a female security officer.
If none is available they can either show their face or wait until one is available (although nowadays there is always a female officer there in case someone needs to be searched).

The rest of the world manages fine without a ban.

So far in this thread the only reason for the ban is peoples own intolerance:rolleyes:

they're actually supposed to be about a higher level of respect for women

Supposed to be. Fair enough, the values behind them are all well and good, but beating women for not wearing them is ridiculous. It should be the role of the men to control their own feelings towards women, and I think forcing someone else to wear less revealing clothing - and beating them if they refuse - is backward and barbaric.

I don't have a problem with the burka itself, there are plenty of peaceful muslims who cause no trouble, but I do have a problem with claims of discrimination when asked to remove it for security reasons. You couldn't walk onto a plane in a balaclava, so you shouldn't be allowed to in a burka.

So, don't ban it, but bring in some legislation that makes it a right of property owners and security to refuse service/entry to someone who refuses to remove any identity-obscuring clothing.

And in this country illegal, there are pleanty of people who do not wear burka's who are abused so that is hardly a reason for a blanket ban.

As above most countries manage fine, they have provisions for this

I am pretty sure there already is, but most people do not follow it because of the reprecussions of doing so.

The problem is ill-trained and ignorant people being in the position to perform the checks, when i visited Saudi all the women wearing burka's had to go to a side and wait in line to be checked behind a screen for example

I'm amazed at the number of people who think the solution to a possible suppression of women's rights is a definite suppression of women's rights...

I wasn't really offering any solutions or input, merely voicing my opinions on this matter. I don't know whether there are any laws or whatever, but this is my main point:

You shouldn't have to face repercussions from claims of discrimination just because you wish to feel safe. Like I said, I can understand the beliefs behind the burka, but the issues with security are far more important in my opinion than religion.

Cant really see bikinis being a security risk to be honest.

Personally, it's nothing to do with women's rights as far as I'm concerned.
And I voted to ban it. :D

EDIT: You want to let your wife wear a bikini in a society ruled by people who advocate the burka? See how the pendulum only swings one way!
