Apple's January 27th Event

As said before, I now see it as a perfect partner to a heavy Mac Pro / iMac user who just wants a casual device to surf the net on out of hours. I now see its worth.

Although i'm not going to pull this thing out on the busy 08:10 to London Bridge or on the street:

You are the iPad customer, personified.
You say that like it's a bad thing! :p
You are creating scenarios to justify what is escentially a pointless product. And your the type of guy who sits in a coffee shop for hours just whoring the free wifi!
You mean like the scenario I am in at this very moment (surfing the web sat on my sofa)?
If the screen is your issue, why not get a netbook? it does everything you want, and the screen is a decent size too. It might also be in a proper HD resolution so you can watch those movies properly... but thats ok, cos you wont have enough storage to put all those HD movies on the iPad anyway. I also know of pleanty of laptops that are no bigger than this, so the laptop to big idea is a no goer.
Netbooks serve a purpose, However I love the touchscreen features of my iPhone (inertial scrolling etc) but would love something with the screen size of a laptop. The fact that the screen isn'tt 'proper' HD doesn't bother me, most of my films I have downloaded aren't HD. I can download HD films (indeed I have a popcorn hour and a 46" 1080p TV to watch them on) but to me the improved video quality isn't worth it for the ~5x increase in file size
And the suggestion that people are going to pay $500 (which we know will translate to £400) for a games device to play iPhone games?!?!?! Are these people burning money?!?!
Yes people will pay more for something if it gives them a better experience, especially if the games are £1-6 a pop like on the iPhone. Also the games won't be just for iPhone, many games will be designed for iPad and some games e.g. Command & conquer will probably work very well.
Seriously, it doesnt make sence, but people like you will buy them, while we all laugh at you and Chavs will nick it off you when you try and read an email in the street...
ok :)

P.S. haha i almost overcooked my dinner as i was so engrossed in this reply, reminds me of http://xkcd.com/386/ :p

This is a vid from 2007 lol and the guy pretty much got it spot on.

Pretty unimpressed with the Apple Tech Event. I guess the hype about OS 4.0 firmware and the potential iPhone 4G meant it was only ever going to be an anti climax. Was going to hold off with my phone upgrade but now I'll just go ahead and get a 3GS. Really can't see the 4G coming anytime soon now.

Too be fair iPhone stuff isn't usually mentioned until June.

Its a coffee table accessory - and always was going to be. Casual use whilst on the sofa whilst the Mrs watches TV. Unfortunately, the media hype / fanboys (granted largely self-inflicted by Apple) made the device out to be something else.

Apple were never going to risk damaging their macbook sales by releasing this. Because its tied to the Apps store they can continue milking the cow - developers will release iPad versions of their apps.

The other point is - compare the specs and design and functionality of the first iPod to the current iPods.

Now imagine this tablet is like the first iPod.... Wait for the next revisions, this is just the start. Apple have a history of starting with a product and adding improvements / features ever year.

No, Apple has a history of starting with 5 year old technology over priced, and then releasing versions that include things the initial one should have had!

Its a pointless argument. You are an apple fanboy and experience has taught me there no changing a fanboys mind.

(by the way, you appear to be doing just fine sat on your sofa posting at the moment.... and you dont have an iPad..... so that £400 would offer you what benifits in this area?)

Did anyone notice if the Apple logo on the back lights up like on the laptops?

Because Apple actually have a support page for this for the Mac mini I shall answer it widely and for everyone :p

The ONLY reason the Apple logo lights up on MacBooks is because it is using the exact same light from the display as your screen. In other words it looks cool but uses no more power.

An iPhone/iPod touch/iPad has stuff, you know, all the hardware, between the screen and the back. To make it light up would require it to use power which is totally idiotic on a mobile device.

Dont have it lying round I have to work hard for my toys ;)

I cant post links as they are competitors, but typing "tablet netbook" into Google gives you a wealth of possibilities for £400 that include HD displays, proper sized hard drives, Windows 7 as opposed to Windows Mobile... etc etc etc.

Theres saving for toys, and then theres saving to throw your money away....

apple seem to of gone wrong with this one. although all the mentions of 'revolutionary' will probably con a good amount of people into buying and then selling one

and genuine question .does it do multi tasking ? why buy this over things like the HP slate that was shown a few weeks ago and runs a 'proper' OS ?

I think you're lacking vision a little here.

While I totally agree there are some drawbacks with the way Apple have delivered the iPad I am going to go against the popular (geek) view and say I still really think this could work. It obviously remains to be seen what the mainstream public think so I could be very wrong!

All of Hamish's scenarios are completely plausable and I can see myself using a device like this for most of them. I don't know how you can call him a fan boy when all of his comments are relating to the format of the devcie rather than anything Apple specific.

This kind of device is pushing the boundaries, yes you can do everything it can do on a laptop/touch screen phone but the format of the thing makes it special. If I want to show friends photo's from a night out I could just pass the tablet around the room and people can flick through them casually, no need to boot up a laptop and pass it round. I know people will argue a laptop is just as good at that sort of thing but I think they would be missing the point.

I personally am quite excited to see this as I think it will mark quite an important step in the way we consume digital media. Whether I end up buying an iPad on a simmilar Windows7 device though remains to be seen

For me I don't think I would find it that useful. I don't really read books. However I can totally see my mum and dad using this. They are not interested is specs, they just want a simple device to e-mail and browse the web without having to turn on a computer.

If you could get digital paper/magazine subscriptions I could see it being more useful.

The 60 day availability is going to work against them as people may actually sit down and think whether this product actually does anything they need. If this was a buy immediately device, the usual people in this section would already be showing us copies of thier order forms :D

The screen res is 1024 x 768.

Certainly don't think you're wrong there.. I cannot WAIT to hear the justifications for some buying this thing. 1024x768 isn't too bad. As it's easier to hand someone in portrait than a laptop/netbook (which is always really limited by verticle resolution, not horizontal) it could still pull the portfolio role well enough. I honestly dread to think what you would look like pulling it out and handing it to someone though. Perhaps waiting for them to become a little more socially acceptable is the best idea.

They definitely need to start employing some of these folk coming up with the concept designs though. Apples own department is obviously running out of ideas.

No, I think you are deliberately avoiding the point. People who say a laptop is better for this are bang on the point. You are deliberately avoiding the point as you like this, and therefore will try you hardest to justify it. You could buy a small laptop AND some fomr of digital picture frame for the cost of an iPad.

The UI is a joke.

I haven't read much of the event yet (waiting for the Quicktime stream) but just watched Apple's own video about the iPad.

That unlock screen...

I'll leave this. I can't believe they supersized an iPod Touch and did nothing with the UI. Very suprised.
