Average Wage for IT Support Job

20k seems to be the average really, which is a fair bit more then I'm on now.

The company i work for will probably pay 20k MAX as they don't see the Service Desk as a major part of the company, but i don't think they realise how much they rely on us.
 
If you weren't dealing with the servers and exchange, that'll be OK, but as above you should be aiming for 20k upwards now.

I'm 21, been with the company almost 2 years now - didn't get a pay-rise last year due to recession. First IT job i had outside of college and the company is quite big.

Well it sounds like your line manager agrees with us.

I'd compile a list of references (job ads, average sites) - but only include those that put the salary >£20k. Then you ask for £20k - an apparent bargain.
 
Our IT support guy is on ~32k. He has 3 years experience and has been with the company for those 3 years.

I personally think he is overpaid (he earns more than the majority of the web developers who also have 3+ years experience!)

Already working on it ;)

Referenced the IT Jobs Watch site and going to look around for jobs that pay AT LEAST 18k.

I'd be happy with 19k, but of course the more the better :)

I do a similiar kind of job in a quite small company but was my first job out of uni.

Dont have to do the travelling and on 22k so you should probably push a bit. I started on 20 as I didnt really want to accept any less than that.

Personally I'd ask for £20k and accept £18.5 as I said. But it's still not a great wage.

Another thing is, I hope you're not paying for all the travel you have to do out of your own pocket.

PM's in the Public Sector around here (East Midlands) are on 35-40k. Don't forget the Public Sector pays less (I'm about 10k behind the average for my job but prefer working conditions in the Public Sector).
 
Think i might change job... Could do 1st line IT support in my sleep. Its paying over 5k more than what im doing and my role is a far sight more important :S
 
I work a technical desk role and have recently gone to 19K basic + shift allowance and work with a big company. Our HR looked into all offered jobs in the area and compared it to what we were doing. If it is a big company your HR should have the tools to do this as well mate. Might be worth checking with them? :)

As a heads up, it depends what company you go to as to what 1st line support is defined as and what you do. Log and pass 1st line will get 5-6K less than a technical 1st line desk
