Hes after a cool hatchback, therefore i still suggest a mk4 r32 that happens to be a performance bargain now anyway (well once you get the haldex uprated) :)

I get around 30mpg around town and 35mpg on a 80mph run with cruise on. Tyres are around £100 each, servicing is indeed the same and insurance is only marginly more.

No, the jump from the MkIV Golf to the MkV Golf was a very, very big one in all areas. The Golf IV is seriously dated now. If he has £9k to spend, why would he want such an old dated car?
 
Because he cant afford a good V for that price.

Every owner of a IV 32 i know has nothing but praise and big grins for it.

Every one I have driven produces the same big grin (especially with haldex controller fitted) even standard.

What a load of rubbish, 30mpg around town? If you were getting that sort of economy you.d get a darn site more than 5mpg extra on the Motorway.

Perhaps you have a different idea of around town.

I hope you are simply making terrible guesses at how much it costs to run your car rather than making it up.
 
OP, Try an EP3 Type-R, very far removed driving experience and ethos from VAG machines. Whether this is a good or bad thing, reckon it's worth you finding out.

Yes he could, a GTi. Why settle for a IV when you can afford a V, especially since the OP hardly sounds like the kind of guy that's interested in running a large V6.

That may well be true, but so what? Farts in a bath produce a big grin, doesn't mean he should buy one for £9k.
 
Read his post again and tell me you honestly think the disadvantages of an older MK5 GTI are worth it for somebody considering something slow like an ST170.

Ok I agree that the ST170 would be more suitable, I'm just trying to gimp twoblackline's argument that a MkIV R32 would be better than a MkV GTi.

Vec averaged around 21 around town, i got 24 on average including some reasonably steady stints

could get 34mpg on an 80mph motorway run.
 
When I was recently looking for a new car I researched most of the cars mentioned in this thread so here's my findings if they help in any way

Civic Type R - Great fun when in the mood, annoying and tedious when you're not
Seat Leon Cupra R - Good all round car, more warm than hot but I wasn't after a race car anymore, been there and done that.
Clio 197 - Lots better than old Clios, chuckable, grippy but still felt flimsy. Not as fast as expected either
Golf R32 (MK IV)- Still too expensive for what they are.
Golf GTi (MK V) - Would've fitted the bill if it wasn't for the fact that they come with a minimum of 2 million miles on the clock and often have tartan interiors. Seriously VW, what are you thinking?

After all that I ended up getting a Mini Cooper S as it just fitted my needs better than any of the above. I realise that this wouldn't be the case for the majority of people so I won't suggest it. If I hadn't got the Mini then would've been the Cupra for definite so I'd suggest trying one out, see how you like it.

I'm tired of it too, as soon as i saw it was a golf thread i knew it would turn into another Robbie G / Fox sideshow with both of them arguing like kids and neither refusing to back down

Its getting tiresome :(
 
Can you get latest shape civic type-s for this budget?

To me though this budget/criteria says mini cooper/cooper s
