*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

Thanks :)

All raw, no belt or straps.

I don't own them anyway, so I work to keep form as good as possible, if my form fails or I can't grip it. It's too heavy and I need to improve :)

Also very nice on the squats, I'm struggling with the 120's :(

Also bruising for me kicks in the next day usually, I hit my knee with the 170 bar coming down and the next day I had a great big blue mark on it :p

Just get some Fastum gel, really good, for muscle and skeleton pains :)
Excellent attitude to have.

Seems like we've got competition ;)

Back to training reasonably serious :D
Can only lift about 160 with the olympic bar and can only lower the weight to about 1.5 inches from the chest due to the shoulder pain. However, it is great to get back in to the action as its been a difficult eight weeks. Don't have the shoulder pain on a machine and so I'm assuming it is the stabilisers that are giving me the difficulty. BP machine only goes up to 100k though :(
Dumbells are still out for shoulders but I can use a hammer shoulder press and still go heavy. Chins are ok as well. So fingers crossed even though there is still about six weeks of pain left ;)

just did my first street dance class...omg everyone who does weights should try it.

its a completly different disciplin and im aching in places i never thought would ache.

im definatly keeping it up when my shoulder has recovered.

Very Happy - Yesterday i managed to bench press 25kg an end 10 reps. 6 Months ago i though the bar was heavy on it's own :)

Did a quick check on measurements just for a laugh:

bis (flexed) just over 18"
thighs (flexed) knocking on 28"
calf (flexed) over 16.5"
waist still at 36"
chest just over 47"
forearm touching 14"

no wonder my bike leathers were feeling a bit tight over the weekend!! :D

sure most of it will undoubtedly be some water but what the heck eh?! :D

Nice going FF, I decided this morning after my workout I'm in love with the lighting in my gyms changing rooms.
I was checking out the nice pump I had on as you do if your a vein bugger :D and noticed a nice little bit of definition coming through on my Apollo's Belt, I'm still carrying too much fat but that gave me a right cheesy grin.

Im the same lol, start to see veins through chest etc , I lack visible lower abs though/apollos belt though so will need to drop a bit more fat for them.

Nice. I managed to incline press 30kg dumbbells in my local gym for 10 reps yesterday :), still not as good with a bar and wont really be training with one properly again till September =/.

For some reason lately my DB Bench has gone up to using a pair of 34's yet I still can't get past 70K on a Barbell which I thought would be significantly easier. Guess my technique with a bar must be lacking somewhere? :S

I'm 74KG at the moment.

Maybe. Use the DBs for assistance and start training flat bench as primary if you want a big bench.

What sets/reps are you doing?

We'll I don't barbell press at all anymore, I never felt much chest activation, so I used DB's.

But I'll give some 1RM's a go on it and with the squat so I can get my totals. :)

At the moment, I DB press 31.2kg's comfortably x6 for 3 sets, and squat 110kg alright at x8 for 3 sets.

So I think I might be long over due for some 1RM's to set a new Personal Best.

Legs, today so I'll get some numbers, and I'll do the chest tomorrow.

Chest might be a problem, since I haven't used the bench in months, but Who Dares, Wins.

Alrighty.

Squat max is 145kg, BW 68kg.

I tried for a 150 but it went bad. Got below parrallel and just didn't have enough energy to get it all the way up. Got about halfway up before I failed :(

I really thought I might be able for it. Oh well, next time I'll aim for 160 :D

I've just witnessed the most incredible thing Ive seen in a gym, and not in a good way.

The weights room was pretty busy with about 12 people, me and a mate on the incline press and my housemate and his friend on the squat rack.

There is a well built guy there who recently joined, but just sits there most the time watching people with his wooly hat on. After a while he will go over and give tips to people. He is a personal trainer apparently, despite not actually being qualified it turns out.

However today he told my housemate he was spotting on the squat rack incorrectly ('not being close enough' despite only 65kg squats) which is fair enough. My housemate has been going to the gym for over 10 years aswell as playing rugby at the highest amatuer level, commented that he wasnt going for a 1RM so didn't feel the need to be right behind him.

The instant he disagreed with this big guy it just kicked off, honestly it was like being on a night out. First the raised voices, then the 'dont you talk to me like that', befor escalating into threatening and shouting. Imagine the scene one person who has visibily lost control of his temper talking to someone who remains pretty calm with the other 10 people just watching in disbelief. The highlight for me was 'when you can lift as much as me you can tell me what to do'.

Luckily one of the gym staff was fetched before it really kicked off.

My housemate has not been to the gym for about 3 months due to a shoulder operation, before that he was benching 140kg despite only an average looking build, however cause he hasnt been there for a while I can only assume 'big man' :p thought he was a noob.

Amazing people are like that really, this guy must get a kick out of correcting people and i guess most people don't usually disagree.

Hard to explain in a post, just wondering if anyone else has had anything like it? Hopefully he will be kicked out as behaviour like that shouldnt be tolerated.

I think you explained it pritty well.

Normally in that situation most people are usually like: 'Okay mate' or 'If you say so' and put their headphones back in or start another set if they disagree.

It's an understandable for tension to be high in that sort of atmosphere with all sorts of chemical & hormonal releases happening inside each person.

Personally if somebodies not at serious risk of injuring themself or others I don't see the need to intervene. Especially if you've not so much as lifted a weight in that gym or as such 'earned your respect'.

I wouldn't dream of walking into a gym I've never been to and telling everybody they're not doing it right!

Turns out he is a bouncer at a local club and is known for his attitude. He does have a pretty immense physique to be fair and does a lot of body weight core stuff, I think he geniunely just looks down to people smaller than him

You'll always get people with attitude in gyms unfortunately.

along with those who are just plain crackpots: For example 5'2 Iraqi guy known for upsetting people and staff at my previous gym decides to fill a 45 degree leg press with 25k plates: 150k each side and attempts to dumbell flies at the same time as pressing (his legs). Suffice it to say he failed on his reps for his legs and his knees were sent hurtling behind his kneck. :D

Haha legend. I found when I first started at the gym I had a couple of big people give me "advice" which to be fair looking back may have been deserved. But now I can't see it, especially if I'm with my training partner.
There was a guy who sounds pretty much the same - the aggression at the gym a few weeks ago. He eventually worked his way around everyone giving them almost laughable advice (which they lapped up). We were the only 2 he didn't come over and share some of his 'tips' with. Felt a bit left out :p
