Australian Grand Prix 2010, Melbourne - Race 2/19

Very very happy for Kubica, Button, and Massa. All did very well and deserved their places.

Really just wish that Kubica would seem to care more when he doesn't have a sniff at a podium, he just seems happy to sit midfield until he gets a chance to fly up the front...

Shame for Hamilton.
 
What a great race! Much better than the last one. It was good to see Button win his first race for Mclaren.

I know a lot of people have been saying Hamilton is faster outright than Button, and they're probably right, but I think Button's treatment of tyres stands a good chance of trumping Hamilton's pace.

Also; those Ferraris have got legs.
 
What an excellent race! Lovely way to wake up on a sunday with all the pre-race stuff from humphreys, coulthard and jordan and then enjoy a stonking 58 laps. All sorts of things happened didn't they. I was going to rush to my pc and post " OMG, VETTEL IS OUT :eek:!" but my bed was too cozy. :p Don't like him, but I do feel sorry for him. If he was with McClaren or Ferrari, there's little doubt he would have won, redbull are simply unreliable.

Lewis Hamilton on the team radio "that was a TERRIBLE decision!"

Gotta say, I agree with him, he was in 3rd place and possibly about to take 2nd.
 
But all the other drivers did. Kubica did. Alonso and Massa did.

I don't believe for a second that LH's driving style is such that his tyre wear is the worst on the grid.

He was actually catching Kubica and then, for some reason, was asked to pit for tyres. Kubica expressed his shock post-race that Hamilton pitted when he did - he said that he thought maybe Hamilton had got a penalty.

Also don't forget that the only reason Jenson pitted is because his inters were cooked and finished. He needed fresh rubber but had no choice than to put soft rubber on. It wasn't really a gamble by him nor was it "his call". It was necessity. He needed new tyres and fast.

Also Button didn't need to drive like Hamilton did because he called the tyres right. At the end of the day the driver knows best how the tyres are performing. Jenson made the call and Lewis listened to the team.

A very calm and smooth drive by Jenson, very pleased for him. A nice confidence boost. Some great moves by Hamilton and also by webber when he didn't screw it up.

I think people are writing off MS way too early as well. He's just had an off day, his pace without the damage in all other areas since he returned has been good. I fancy him to outqualify and beat rosberg soon.

Me too, a deserved apology though. I doubt Lewis will have much love for Mark after that, once is excusable, twice you'd have thought he was aiming.

Schumacher really has dropped a clanger. Even if he improves dramatically from here on and even wins, all this moaning and crying is very undignified for a 7 time world chump.

he raced out of his skin to get to 3nd place then a pit stop that put him way down he still gave it everything to catch alonso only to get stuck behind on tyres that had done 30 laps less, i can see why he was frustrated.

but you cant be anything but a gentleman or you get reprimanded. i think any driver that had done that would feel the same.

Just to clarify those were two different tyre decisions. Jenson was never told to pit from the lead and ultimately didnt make a decision did he? Hamilton behind Kubica from a strategic point of view was an ideal candidate to diversify the strategy and try out new slicks.

It's all very easy in hindsight, but if I was in McLaren's position at that point I would have done the same.

Yeah it was getting a bit silly really. Though Hamilton shouldn't have broadcasted over the radio "MY TYRES ARE OFF, TYRES ARE OFF!"... maybe then MW wouldn't have been licking his gearbox for several laps before the unfortunate incident happened...

mw just got a slap on the wrist for that stunt. I think Kubica was driver of the day, but hamilton was robbed of a podium.

but least it was actually a good race compared to the last race..

Really, where have you seen that? I've not had time to scour all the post race bumpf but that's the first mention i've seen that Jenson had basically killed his tyres and forced the early change.

As for what the other drivers were doing, the other drivers weren't putting in the blistering laps Hamilton and Webber were before they pitted, which speaks volumes to me. I think they'd both hurt their tyres doing that as the pair of them were clearly on a mission to prove something and were driving those cars to the very edge. I don't think the tyres would have lasted that sort of driving another 25-30 laps I think it was, like it did for everyone else who were in effect plodding around in comparison.

Agreed but it's no use hamilton moaning about the teams poor decision, he's part of that call. If he wanted to stay out he could have.

Hamilton is godly fast and agressive at times but doesn't seem to have the situational awareness that some of the other greats have had at times and is led by the team rather than him leading the team.

For someone who had 3 yrs out of the seat he not doing too bad, He is gonna need time to find his pace and settle in. It not a ferrari he was once used to.

About 10 times in this they say it was Jensons call regardless of his tyres going off.

Unless of course you think Mclaren Lie :D

Jenson said it on the F1 Forum. Said his inters were useless after just 6 laps and so he pitted. Obviously not wanting to put on another set of useless inters he opted for the soft tyre. He said he was going backwards because he had no grip on the inters, which prompted him to make the switch.

LH was certainly on a charge for most of the race but the tyres were taking it. Alonso was on a charge just like Hamilton, though it didn't get as much coverage. He was stone dead last on lap 1 and finished 4th with just 1 pit stop. Oddly nobody seemed to use the damp parts of the straights to cool their tyres though.

When I said it wasn't "his call" I was trying to say that it was out of his control. He needed new tyres. Yes it was his call in the sense that he took control of the situation and said "that's it, team, i'm coming in for slicks". That's one of the main differences between Jense and Lewis. Lewis should probably take more control of his strategy decisions.
