*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

I am officially giving up heavy lifting as I simply don't enjoy it anymore. My last session deadlifting I had a go at 270 kilos but couldn't lock out, so close as it was above my knees no belt or straps just chalk! My main aim now is to work on the cardiovascular side of things as this will greatly benefit me as I'm asthmatic. I'll still pop in here to the sports arena for the lulz though.

Happy lifting people :).

Just because you don't want to lift heavy anymore doesn't mean you're not going to lift though does it? :(

If it's for health reasons I can completely understand why - but it would be a shame if you're not still involved somehow in the metal lifting game.

Reloaded is having its usual effect on me, Hit 130kg for 5 reps on the bench on Friday and then a cheeky double at 140kg so will give 145kg/150kg a go this week for the first time in about a year.

What ever makes you happy Tank :)

I echo what FF said, you can still lift, just not heavy!

If/when you return you should be stronger!

Some respectable lifts!

I don't know how you minimise stretch marks as I've been lucky not to grow quick enough to get them (bar a couple of places). Laser treatment or certain creams can help I believe?

Today is Chest & Biceps, however my Triceps still have DOMS. Do you think I should train chest today?

if it's not very bad then yes.

As for stretch marks Zinc helps, and if you are really concerned then olive oil.
Oil yourself up on the stretchmarks, wait for about half an hour - take shower.

Obviously this is to help minimise them as they appear, once they're there fully blown, they will be there forever. sun tanning helps though.

I had stretch marks from extreme weight loss and also from weight lifting when i had a bit of weight. I had to use Bio-Oil to make them fade away, i've learnt a lot from that and now i train more sensibly.

It was a case where i knew little about training and eating correctly, but once i researched it, i haven't developed any new stretch marks since.

Good. I wasn't sure if by having DOMS on tricep and training chest I would risk injury or over training.

Is it true that muscle twitches are associated with overtraining?

I heard some of the physio students talk about it and got me worried.

I've had the odd muscle twitches since last week, in quads, shoulders ( which actually makes my entire arm twitch) and the odd back on.

If so I'd say it's probably because I had two weeks of nothing but pure extreme lifting, where I was constantly lifting heavy and setting PB's.

I think I should probably go light/medium load this week.

Got them all down my back i presume from growing. People think i've been whipped or something

Exactly the same for me, they look pretty bad but have faded a bit over the last few years.

It's recommended that you use some sort of oil daily, olive oil seems to be pretty common.

It takes a lot to over train - but it is possible. Muscle twitches I always associate with lack of oxygen to those tendons or lack of sleep which could be associated with lack of recovery indirectly I suppose. However it could be your CNS just responding to the stimulus of hard training. If you've been pushing up big PBs you're really taxing your CNS as a result it could just be your body's way of trying to stimulate improved nerve response / development.

Mixing heavy / medium is sensible as when you do push yourself beyond your normal ability it does tax the body immensely, certainly if you haven't had the opportunity to recover properly in between.

Twitching is symptomatic of hard training but not necessarily directly related to over training. Clearly though it's preying on your mind, and by the sounds of things you have been going for it so a lower intensity bit of training cold be sensible.

Thanks FF.

I think I will take it a bit easier this week.

Haven't slept the best since last Wednesday either, seem students here think it's time to party. Loads of loud noises and irritations till about 3am on average. Bad if I always have to be up at like 7am.

Never heard of that being a cause of overtraining before.
