I'm really surprised by all the ASDA negativity on OcUK.
The 4 towns i've lived in everyone i knew/know shopped at asda or wanted an asda locally!
This ranged from Lancashire, Devon, Peterborough and Milton Keynes, a rather good spread of poverty and wealth!

My local is ASDA Tilbury. I hate it. It's horrible. It's dirty, with dirty screaming kids and some really horrible people (I say some, as of course there are normal people too). A mess of a store generally to be avoided.

I never knew supermarket snobery existed. Surley common sense dictates you do your shopping at the cheapest? They all have very simlar products and the quality really is negligible.

For you social outcasts out there who don't like to shop with the "scumbags" do your shopping online or do your shopping at 6am to avoid any contact with the masses.

i wonder if these people ever travel to the city centre, they obviously dont live in the real world.

the types you see in a shop will depend entirely on the time you go shopping , i tend to find uni students are worse than chavs

Does it normally have the items you want?

I'd say it's about average in that regard. I have nothing in my mind that makes it particularly notable as always having or always not having what I want. Generally I will use Tesco Lakeside for the random items I may need to use a supermarket for.

....and this is not a word of a lie, an announcement of the tannoy which said:

'This is a colleague announcement. Can we have a passion for service please, a passion for service. Thank you'.

I cringed.

That is just a standard call to notify shop floor colleagues to go to checkouts, helping to reduce the large queues/waiting times during busy periods. Nothing more sinister than that

I will say however your first observation is pretty much spot on. Having worked there for five years, my conclusions are that the people whom shop there are getting worse. I've lost count the number of times Iv been verbally heckled, and on a couple of occasions physically assaulted by upset customers not getting their way.

To this day, my personal favourite was a customer who had the cheek (brains?) to bring his 2 YEAR 10 MONTH old 28" CRT TV, VHS player and microwave in for a refund. They had all 'stopped working'. Since he had a valid receipt, which at the time covered all electronics with a 3 year guarantee...he walked out with a brand new 37" HD LCD, a DVD-VHS combi player, a brand new Hitachi Microwave and 46 quid in his back pocket.

I shop online and usually go with Tesco as it always ends up cheaper or near enough the same. Its a load of rubbish that ASDA is always cheaper. In fact when Tesco used to offer the £13 off £100 shop etc codes it worked out much cheaper.

Not to mention the clubcard vouchers add up at the end of the year. Usually pays for our whole Christmas shop inc turkey :).

Ive also found that a few of Asda's own brand products taste a lot better than Tesco's and vice versa, so some time go into the Asda store to pick up a few things.

If this thread has proved something it's that the supermarkets vary massively from store to store. The Asda here in Milton Keynes is in a league of it's own, being one of the biggest supermarkets in the country means it's spacious, has a great selection of meat/veg and checkout time is minimal.

I don't know where the nearest Asda is for me, but I've never shopped in one. I have a Sainsburys and a Waitrose near me that's usually where I go. I try and avoid all others as I just prefer the goods from those 2. :)

Sainsburys have some decent own brand products but it seemed really expensive last time i shopped there.

Aye totally.

Around here Tesco is much better than the ASDAs.

I like Tesco, I find the staff fairly helpful, the store is clean and they usually have what I am looking for.

Asda sadly is generally full of undesirables. I don't know why that is, it just seems to be the case.

My local Asda is so big that it's just hard to find stuff. I normally shop at Morrisons though just because I get my fuel there and collect the miles.

best way we have started to save money is to shop at aldi for most bits then get the odd thing from tesco.

is all the same makes just cheaper. most of the stuff we buy it doesnt really matter what make it is as its raw ingredients since we cook everything from scratch.

so aldi + market + butchers + bakery = cheaper than tesco/asda.

aldi is hit and miss for me, some of the stuff tastes fine to me and not much different from a decent brand name but other stuff will taste really cheap.

most of our shop is done in morrisons , asda and tesco, but we have an iceland just over the road so often we will get bits and bobs from there between main shops
