*** The Official HTC Desire (Bravo) Thread! ***

So, my phone came, but I don't seem to be able to do anything. I can't send messages, make calls, or get on the internet. I can recieve calls and messages, but that's it.

Am I just being retarded? Do I need to register my SIM and link it to my account or something? I've got a new number, no PAC code or anything...

First smartphone for me, as you can probably tell :p

Normally takes up to 24 hours to activate the sim, it should state this in the instructions from your provider.

have you bought it sim free? Or is it a contract phone?

Contract phone - I went for the T-Mobile offer (600 mins, 500 texts, unlimited internet, £25pm).

edit: Tried to register my phone on t-mobile.com/myt-mobile but it does not recognise the number

Did you select T-Mobile as your carrier when you turned it on?

Call them from your house phone and ask if it's all showing as activated on their end.

If it's not showing your number on mytmobile then it's probably not registered yet, can take up to 24 hours as it says in your paperwork!

Yeah, T-mobile is set up as the carrier (it finds the network okay on the phone).

I guess I'll wait 24 hours and see what happens, although I can't find any mention of a registration delay in the paperwork. In fact, the very first thing it says is: "1. Slot your SIM into your phone, 2. Now you're ready to make calls, texts and send picture messages".

Cheers guys :)

Finally managed to root my Desire. Had all sorts of problems, and eventually discovered it was the Micro SD card I was using, so went out and got another one.

For info, the 'Optima' cards that Sainsburys sell don't work. The SanDisk ones that Tesco sell do!

The sandisk that came with the phone worked perfectly well as a gold card for me :)

Then I swapped it out with another sandisk, but a 16gb :D

I'm about to attempt to flash the ROM that I downloaded (a custom MCR 3.1), but the instructions seem vague, so thouhgt I'd check with those who have done it already that i'm doing it right.

My Desire is rooted, but still on the rom it came with.

Instrictions say:

To install this ROM:

* Ensure you have are able to launch the custom recovery image (see 'requirements' above)
* Download the zip file of your choice from the links below (or the online kitchen) and copy to your SD card Which SD card, the Goldcard I made for rooting, or the normal card from the phone, or a separate blank card?
* Restart your device in recovery mode
* PERFORM A NANDROID BACKUP FROM THE MENU - is this necessary for me, I've not actually got anything on the phone I want to save yet.
* Select the option to apply an update zip, and select the zip file you copied to your memory card

Also, the ROM i've chosen has APPS2SD+ on it. I need to format my card with the right partitions, and will do that on my computer. But when do I do it, before flashing the rom, or after?

It doesn't matter, once you are rooted the need for a gold card is gone. Just put the file on there by itself, after formatting it to FAT32.

I dont think it matters, but you might as well do it, it only takes a minute.

I think you'll be able to do to do Apps2SD after, I know you can add it once you've put the ROM on I think, I'm sure someone else here has set it up via that method though. It's also reportedly got a few problems, so I'd hang fire unless you use loads of apps.

Nimbu Guide - More in depth and probably easier for you to follow - http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/05/how-to-root-your-htc-desire/

Any questions, ask ;)

The link above says:
This guide lets you root only a HTC Desire which has a bootloader version of 0.75 or below. To check the bootloader version, switch off the device. Turn it on whilst holding the ‘back’ key. You should be able to see the text ‘HBOOT’, and a version number besides it. This number is the bootloader version.

Mine is now 0.80 due to the OTA last week :(

Well try the Modaco version then first off! Just use the updated Modaco files and follow that guide, will work fine.

I'm just reading the iPhone 4G thread in the Apple forum. People are saying they badly want it before they've even gone through many of the features. Absolute insanity.
