*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

Agreed. Of course if you're competing you'd need to train them to get some specific shape, but for size alone, I've managed decent size without doing much/any isolation work. So size is possible without isolation.

Exactly this.

Do you have a swimming pool nearby you can use, I know it's the obvious suggestion but it's low impact and a pretty good workout for cardio.

Cheers semi-pro, I have one a while away and could probably get there twice a week I think, so I think I'll give that a go cheers, I also go to Greece in a villa in august with our own one, so will make full use of it then too. Thanks mate.

So I've stopped using my very local gym and started using one closer to work. The free weights area is much better than my old gym (db's only)
Did my first proper squat session today with my training partner, 45kg! :o
Still not too shabby I guess for a noob with pencil legs :p I also think my form was pretty good too. My legs are killing now - walking hurts! :D
Operation: Bodyweight (85kg) is under way!

Just finished training legs and I'm getting ever more frustrated with having to boost from an olympic bench and walk back 2 meters back. I don't really feel comfortable doing any more than 140KG as it's a) difficult to boost from such a low akward position and b) I have no confidence in the instructors helping me to boost/spotting me.

The leg extension is awful with pads far too soft and at 125KG (stack) I could the metal rod digging into my shins. Not to mention the **** poor ROM.

Leg press I can live with and the leg curl (which I'll use if my core is too ruined for SLDL's) is quite reasonable.

I can make do with the smith for 'feet together and right out' infront ATG squats.

I more or less got my answer for squat stands which was that they couldn't guarentee the security of them, which provided I was allowed to use them would mean carrying them back and forth to the gym.

I'm happy to squat at home and then walk round the courner to finish legs off or just buy a bench with a decent curl/extension attatchment. Though space is a limiting factor. I'd need seperate stands as we don't have room for a squat rack or power cage.

I've seen some here:

http://www.gymratz.co.uk/gymratz-squat-stands

Which look tip top but also come with a massive price tag!

I've looked at powerhouse fitness and their cheap stands are only rated upto 115KG and that seems to be all the have on offer before the stands become fixed together which would be an issue for me as space really is an issue and it needs to be able to be packed away to take up as little space as possible.

I'd like to do this on as small a budget as possible but am well aware of you get what you pay for so will be spending enough to ensure I don't have to buy twice.

I was thinking about getting a metal works to knock me up something similar but am unsure how much (if at all) this would be cheaper by? Enough weights & a suitable bench with attatchments will already chime in to the tune of £700

Does anybody have any ideas or is anyone able to recommend some other squat stands. I've had a damn good google but there doesn't seem to be a lot of options!

A power rack with a pulley system works out cheaper than that stands but I just don't have the space :(

Benny I read a thread somewhere about using builders trestles for squat stands. They are cheap, some are rated to 450kg and they are height adjustable. Just a thought if you wanted to keep costs low.

What's the maximum amount of books you're allowed out of your local library at once? :D

Gets coat..

Close the door behind you :p

I've had a measure up and it seems I *might* be able to fit a power cage in. As it's the side passage of our house it would literally be stuck between two walls. But in order for that to work the catcher bars would need to be removed/slotted in from the sides as opposed to slid in from the front/back. If that makes sense?

Cheers I'll give them a google :)

Looks like I can fit a power cage in side on! Just have to convince the mother....

Managed to bust out a couple of sets of 80kg on the flat bench today, pretty chuffed with myself! Hopefully looking to increase that next week.

I was also told today that the leg press' max. weight on each side is 240kg which is a bit disappointing. That being said, I'm in no rush to go to my goal. I think I'd rather focus on getting squats and deads sorted anyway.

Shadow, how's your deadlifting going? Broke that 180 yet?

Also I really love your 180kg squat! If only we didn't have a smiths.
Hey,

In all honesty I've just gotten back into a routine of training and eating as of last week, the last 4 months at Uni were hectic. I haven't touched DL's other than the challenges. I'm working on a quite interesting routine atm and I'm hoping to break 200KG for the squat but in all honesty, I'm still not quite sure how I managed the 180, so my confidence is a bit shady!

How about yourself, how have you been getting on? :)

Do you actually have the size (on your legs) to go with the amount of weight you are pushing-I suppose would be the real question? Maybe I am missing something but what is your bodyweight, height and body fat as well because your upper body lifts are so disproportionate to everything else I am left wondering what your body stats are? :)

Edit:The leg press shouldn't be the "be all" of your leg routine anyway.

College was mental aswell, finals really took up most of my time.
Although the day before moving back I did some DL's, worked up from 100 -180 with 2 reps on each. It's far easier than it use to be.

Sadly my current gym has 5ft Olympic bar so we're talking a max of 145 on DL's. I've just been doing tons more volume on it.

On squats I'm still stuck on a smiths, although this on isn't like the other, it actually has a bit of a decline on it, putting even more pressure on my lower back. Seems that 170kg squat shall still be laughing at me for a while :p

But best of luck with that 200kg squat target man. Judging by how easy that 180 looked I'd say you're not far off it.

At anyrate Freefaller and the lads better watch out for us lightweights :D

Excellent! You really made the 180 look easy, definitely motivation for me!

Looking forward to getting back into DL'ing. I need to get some chalk as 170 is where my grip just gives in! I've been doing DB DL's super-setted with military press. Lets just say my tee was soaked in sweat today :o

How much are you weighing in at the moment?

Ah, death to smith machines! It it better than nothing though.

That's right beasties, watch out - the lil' kids are on the block :D

My legs are pretty big as it is. I play football every week and before I got onto the weights I was running 5-10km a day so my legs have always had a decent workout. This could be why the disproportion is there, as I've said, I've never properly trained the upper body before a month or two ago.

6'0, 95kg, BF I haven't got a clue on!

There is nothing there to suggest you are a big lad by any means (no disrespect intended :)) therefore it might be that you are just particulary good/suited to the leg press and your major leg development/gains should come from something else. I shouldn't worry too much about the lack of weights and poundages concerning the press instead concentrating on other exercises for the legs in conjunction. Good luck.

I have to say that you guys are brilliant. Some really good work there. In terms of power to weight ratio - you walk all over me. I think in terms of raw power/strength I might still have the edge overall, but there's not really much in it anymore.

I really need to get that 600kg and I'll be a happy man! :D I'll get my 220kg squat and my 250kg DL by the end of the year, don't worry! ;) :D That'll slow you two down a bit :p

You guys should be really proud of your achievements - it's top class. It really is. I don't want to sound as though I'm being patronising or condescending at all by the way, I truly mean that, I genuinely believe you guys are good enough to compete for your weight class you certainly wouldn't come last. :)

I almost feel I should be asking you for help and guidance!

If I really tried I could probably do it now, but i'm a stickler for form. Really I should be on 250-270kg deads by now, but I've been taking it slowly. Squats should be a bit more than 200kg, I can rep deep 170kg without much fuss for 5-6. It's a lack of decent equipment and spotters that puts me off. Deads I just haven't been focusing that much on :(

250kg is only 2.5x BW for me :(

However i reckon if i dropped 20kg i'd still be able to do 235kg which is nearly 3x! :D :p

Hi guys. My first time posting in this thread and i have a question regarding bench pressing and an injury i might have sustained. I was wondering if anyone else had suffered the same kind of injury.

Anyway, I went to the gym last night as it was "push" night. I had to miss about 3 weeks training becuase of exams & revision so i thought i'd take it a little lighter than usual. My strength was down but i managed to do what i was aiming for but afterwards (& this morning) I have a real pain in my back between my shoulder blades. It really restricts me turning my head from side to side and i was wondering if anyone else has ever expearienced this?

I can only assue it was to do with the benching as i squeeze my shoulder blades together but it may be something to do with the overhead pressing.

Any thoughts?

Ah yeah those super sets! I love and hate them. On Cardio days I take a barbell put on two 10kg plates and do the following:

Deadliftx6
SLDeadliftx6
BORx6
Hanging Snatch x6
Frontsquat x6
Pushpress x6
Backsquat x6
Goodmorning x6

You don't stop, rest or put the bar down till you're done with those. That's one set. I try for 4-5, sometimes 6.

I'm weighing in at around 70-73, depending on if I weigh in the morning or night. Although I'd say that extra 3kg is probably from all the food and water I shove into myself :D

Talking about chalk, my gym doesn't allow it, but I sneek in my liquid chalk in my bag, put a tiny bit and hide the bottle again.:p

WOAH! Thanks a lot FF!

Although I know that 600kg is right in the bag for you, just stop caring so much about 90-100% form :p

Ah but habits are hard to break.:)
