*** The all new iPhone 4 thread - Keep all iPhone 4 stuff in here ***

I really don't want to get on the apple hype wagon but they are so good at making me want their products :)

I haven't owned an iPhone and I'm really wanting this to be my first.

Because it's fit, the screen seems to be a big seller for it, but also I don't care for intense phones and I think the iPhone seems to be just below super intense complicated and way above limited features.

iPhone definitely seems to becoming a standard, apps only seem to be worth the talk unless it's on an iPhone and a lot of people chat about "ooo show me that app" "I've just got this app" etc etc...

And yes, I want to be a part of that! :) I'm selling out

ill warn you that engadget are the most apple biased site i can think of !

they even rig there android vs iphone comparison vids by sending the iphone to the iphone version of there own site while the android phones go to the full version which has been proven to be very buggy

as a bit of an apple fan i have been keeping an eye on the 4gs though and it certainly looks impressive and is everything the 3gs should have been (higher res , camera thats worth having ,multi tasking) just dont think i can justify the price at the moment

Reading the review I did sense some slight whiffs of a fanboy writing it, however I will read all of the reviews over the course of the next week and make a decision then :) (after trying one too)

Im the same as you, I dont like the iphones software. I tried a friends 3G and I felt like I was using a toy. You invariably have a screen displaying some info and one onscreen option or something, it felt kiddy, like apple didnt think its users could deal with options or something.
It a mobile phone for girls what you expect..;)

While the Apple forum is fine, it is packed to the rafters with people who wont listen to any kind of reason (not everyone, mind) and we should be allowed a seperate discussion :)

As opposed to a forum packed to the rafters with Android fanboys who make a daily "lets all rip on the iPhone" thread, presumably as some kind of strange purchase justification?

Anyhow, with regards to the actual phone itself, i'll reserve judgement until I can go into an Apple store and try one. There's absolutely no way to tell how good a phone is from a review really, as each person is different.

I will be trying some Android devices as well to see what I prefer, but it's a lot harder to decide how good a phone is when all you seem to get these days is 90 seconds in a cramped Orange/O2/Voda shop with a sales rep breathing down your neck. :(

Its not anywhere near as bad as the Apple forum. There are no "rip the iPhone" threads either.

True about the sales reps though, I get very annoyed having to keep putting them right when they waffle random lies most of the time! :p

The shops are all way too small :(

I wouldn't call them ripping the iPhone threads really, more discussing.

Still, plenty of valid points there.

As I have said, my main gripe now is the fact of what the iPhone costs compared to its Android counterparts, it needs to be cheaper.

That said, I can live with that in the name of gadgetry ;)

It does need to be cheaper, but there are certain ways around that. For example, when I got my 3GS my Nokia N82 recycled for the cost of the phone, so I just had to take the contract. I also got the insurance and a load of accessories thrown in. So it is possible to haggle.

Also the value of an item is dictated by what people are willing to pay for it. You might say that the Desire is much better value for money as you can negotiate contracts like free/18m/£20pm for it, but then no single person can simply say "The iPhone is 153% better than the Desire as such, can be up to 153% of the price without becoming poor value" (153 being a value plucked out of the air to carry my point).

I also think it's impossible to compare the iPhone to anything else out there, simply because there isn't anything else out there like it. It has a totally different design, and OS, to everything else available.

It's totally personal preference - which is why i'm ignoring reviews and drawing conclusions on my own. I actually know one of the senior sales in the Orange shop in Exeter and i'm going to beg him to lend me a Desire for an afternoon so that I can have a proper fiddle with it.

On a side note, what other phones are worth a look at - the Samsung Galaxy S? What about older models like the Hero?

You're not wrong there.

Handy that you know someone at the Orange shop, hopefully he will be able to let you have a trial of both phones properly without any hassle!

I have an N900 and iPhone 3GS that I can sell to cover the initial contract handset layout and the vast majority of the contract itself, so I'd keep hold of my Desire certainly :)

Let us know how you get on.

Just noticed your edit, the Galaxy S is worth a look yes. It seems let down by various bits and bobs though along with its build quality. I'd completely ignore the Hero, its very old hat now.

You may like the X10 too, but it would be between the Desire/Galaxy S and iPhone4 in my opinion.

Ooh you have an N900. Opinions on that?

I find it an extremely intriguing phone, given that i've had some stunning Nokia handsets in the past.

Well, its a very marmite phone.

Its well built, feels very solid. Its VERY thick though and that might bother you (not me so much).

Maemo is very interesting, the multi-tasking puts that of Android and the new iPhone to shame (from what I can tell). You run programs in a window much like on a computer, and can minimise them and return to the desktop and the back to them at will.

Its an interesting concept that does work very well and again, you would really have to try one.

The phone side of it is very clean and nice, with all the little details you would expect from Nokia, sound quality from the speaker and microphone are very good too.

Its browser is magnificent, as good as anything else out there.

It feels quite fast although it has slightly more dated hardware.

Keyboard is fine to use although I think I could type faster with Swype now :p

Its badly let down by -

Nokia have abandoned it just about and it wont be getting many more apps, there are only a few around for it now. No guarantee that MeeGo (new OS) will work at all or properly at the moment.

The battery is quite hit and miss, sometimes it will last a while, other times it wont (no indication of why from logs etc).

The OVI Maps that runs on it is god awful for navigation software.

Resistive touch screen, not really as responsive and pleasant to use as the newer iPhone/Android handsets, has a stylus too which you may need on occasion and is a bit meh.

It feels quite boring to use and look at in many ways compared to the iPhone OS/Sense UI and so forth.

In short: You would have to try one and I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone due to the support issues and it feels quite bland.

That's just a brief rundown of what popped into my head about it, any specific questions please ask :p

There do seem to be quite a few around unfortunately, but at least they aren't quite as vehement as certain other members when they get going. Still can't work out why anyone gets so worked up about pieces of equipment though...

I'm quite lucky. Our O2 store recently got refurbished with proper phones on display so you can have a play with them without being pestered. They aren't even in those stupid cradles that seem to be in all the other O2 stores, they are attached by the wire things so you can actually move them around, put them to your ear etc. :D

But then that's what i'm doing with my HD. Going to put the £150 towards the cost of the contract instead of the phone so you still loose out getting an iPhone on contract.

I disagree there. If that is the case then you should never compare Symbian, Winmo and WebOS either. They are all very different OSs and work very different ways. You can obviously compare them. Some are better than others at certain things. Design wise it's essentially exactly the same as all the other touchscreens to come out in the last couple of years too.

Personally for a features point of view WinMo wins out. It's pretty much got everything you will ever need, however it isn't the fastest or easiest OS to navigate with a touchscreen. iOS is very fluid and even but just too closed natured (not really missing much important out any more) and boring. Android seems to be the best of the bunch ish at the moment as it seems to combine the most of the features and customisability* of WinMo with the speed and eas of touchscreen naviagtion of iOS.

*By customisability I don't just mean new ROMs but ability to change wallpapers, create new home screens etc.
