It's interesting. On talksport they're saying we didn't play very well against USA, only in parts, but that today we played much better. That's not really true. We played exactly the same imo, (which was decent enough to get another goal) the only difference is that we had a goalkeeper who was awake.

To clarify, soccer is extremely widely played in the United States at the primary and secondary school level (a point which many people seem to get confused over), which drops off during college and then finally falls down to the stereotypical play/interest level that people seem to be putting forward here. The statistics about the U.S. having the highest population of soccer players in the world is true certainly, but then again the average attendence for most MLS matches (their equivilant of the Premier League) is in the hundreds.

Does this reflect at all on the US 'deserving' to go through? No. Their performance reflects that.

On a personal note from actually living there right now, even if people would not watch the matches (the times are pretty awkward here anyway and the last match of the day would finish just as people are coming home on the East Coast) they are largely aware of their team's progress, which increases as they further progress in the tournament. Coverage is extensive and news items about the world cup are predominant in sports reports right now (and would have gotten elbow room even during the NBA playoffs).

Since I haven't posted in a while, I thought I'd remark on the old adage about England being less than the sum of its parts being truer than ever.

omg how bad/annoying was Mark lawrenson today? I know it's a fiercely competitive field but for me he's one of the worst on TV.

He is always annoying...the guy is just constantly miserable about everything.

I mean...pardon me, but you are at the World Cup ! watching matches live and better still not only did you not have to pay to get there, nor have to pay for accomadation, but you are actually getting paid instead !

What the hell is there to be miserable about?

ENGURLAND! ENGURLAND!

Lol can't believe people are still being negative!

I still believe :).

Why? 2 goals in three games against distinctly average opposition and finishing the group runners up is hardly a resounding success.

We are now on the tough side of the draw and could potentially meet Germany and Argentina.

Then you have the Beeb commentators saying we now don't mind who we play next, just cause we scraped a 1-0 again Slovenia. It really makes me laugh.

That said, the performance was better, even if Rooney was still very ordinary.

I don't agree. Even apart form Green's fumble, our defence throughout the US game looked pretty shaky; today they looked more more convincing. Terry, especially, played very well. Going forward, we had more shape and movement, and created more chances.

Partly that's because USA played better than Slovenia, but I still think this was a better performance.

Everyone's saying that we don't mind who we play next as we were lucky to be there :D

In saying that though, we can bring the game to Germany if we play like we did for some moments today.

Sunday is going to be exciting! I can't wait.

LETS GO GERMANY

Too many Tennent's for you, you've forgotten who you're meant to be supporting! Come on Ghana!

I hope Germany play England, will be a great day for football with the match arg vs mexico match in the evening. It will raise englands game no doubt as they will be facing decent opposition, and if you cant get psyched up for a germany match then they should come home.

Also i want Ghana to do well, and a Ghana vs USA game will be good to watch. the yanks are providing some good entertainment

Well done England for finally going out there and showing some fight...unlucky Rooney didnt score but he just looks out of sorts and he didnt look happy being subbed off but it just wasnt happening for him today and neither has it been for the past 2 games either...can only hope he gets his goalscoring boots on because he needs a few goals to settle himself down.

Dont think we played all that well tbh...1st half we were excellent with Milner supplying a lovely cross for Defoe to get on the end of and bar a few chances nothing else. 2nd half i thought we started brightly but again nerves crept in and we were so damn lucky not to concede a goal...geez heart attack moment there:p

Personally i dont think england will get through the last 16 unless they really pull out something special...it looks like we might end up with Germany and i do hope we beat them but the Germans wont back down...they had a blip against Serbs but i reckon tonight they will spank the holy hell out of Ghana.

Nice little earner for me too...£150 profit on England winning although i had to put £200 but it paid off...just about:p

Ok, but I reckon if we hadn't conceded that goal courtesy of cinderella with the gloves on, england would have maintained their confidence from that 1-0 lead and carried on to play like they did today.

Germany will destroy Ingerland

LOL!

We can give the Germans a good game, we have nothing to fear from them, if we play at our best.

Much, much better from England.
Even the manager was excited!

The last 15 mins we were poor though, giving the ball away too easily, inviting pressure.

But, to finish on a postive, that's more like it, the whole team played their part and the boys done good ;)
