*** The all new iPhone 4 thread - Keep all iPhone 4 stuff in here ***

It's the store I worked at, so I have some vague idea... ;)

iPad launch, for comparison, had people queuing up outside the door by HMV, and the door by Cafe Nero. At around 7am, the doors by Cafe Nero were opened, allowing people to enter the Arndale. A queue then forms around the railings outside the Apple Store, and loops back around on itself.

When I drove into Manchester at around 6:45am, there were maybe 30 people outside of the HMV entrance, and around 10 outside the Nero entrance.

I expect iPhone 4 launch to be bigger though. Hope it helps.

Cheers!

So where are people getting there phones and what network?

i have gone for tesco as voda is a no go round here the same as three and t-mobile

reason for this, the contract is only 12 months i wont need more then then 250 min every month i might go over on a bussy one but not a lot. so can drop down to the £20 a month contract after 12 months (or PAYG)

so the total cost over 24 months is £100 less the that on orange with more data

and the option to upgrade at the 12 month mark or find an even cheaper contract as i will have moved to manchester then so could have my choice of networks :-D

this is what they call a plan my friends tell me yours :-D

Wow never noticed before...but it does the same on my 3GS drops to the bair minimum signal

Ok, from my brief and probably inaccurate tests with a not-great signal.

When you pick the phone up -

The 3GS along with the 3G both drop a bar or two.

The N900 doesn't seem affected by it.

The Desire does drop a bar or two as well.

The Hero might drop a bar, although it was difficult to tell :p

Still, the iPhone 4 antenna is meant to be a step up, or so Apple say!

Also, the Engadget poll is showing quite worrying results! (Here)

More people than not have a problem with the screen  (I agree its not a huge sample number but over 2000 certainly isn't small)

just tested and original iphone does it as well but i have been using it since launch and dident notice until now so i am not classing it as a problem as i dont hold my phone like then when on a call and texting my thumb is on the screen not the side of the phone

Gizmodo

Update 4: Reader Chris Sheehan did a speed test with the phone sitting down, with his hands on the phone, and one with his hands on but with a leather case on it. They're in order, and the one with his hands on the bare phone is really bad times.

Again, hardly proper tests but it doesn't look good :(

Provided its correct, it probably rules out a software fault.

i hold my phone with thumb on the screen and it rests in my hand i dont really touch the sides of the phone and when i do its only one side really

i think people might be going over the top also this is all tests on AT&T i am guessing depending on the signal the more or less it will drop.

also is there something to do with the wave it travels on as different networks use other waves or something like with wifi.

is there a band that cut though humans better? :D

If you read the engadget comments regularly, you know that there is a massive number of iPhone and Apple haters on that site, those results are unlikely to be accurate.

I've decided to wait a while and go for the 32GB white version whenever it's released, I'm not in any real hurry to have it on launch day. I've been in Birmingham city centre since 7:30 am this morning for work and my hackerspace meeting tonight and have only just got in so I'm not getting up early to wait in a long ass queue. I've also been using my iPhone 3G all day and I'm perfectly happy with it at the moment, it still does everything I need and hasn't let me down over the past 2 years.

Well they are from Gizmodo, I assume you mean them and not Engadget?

I'm not sure that Apple haters would have bought an iPhone 4 just to falsify results but we will see.

As I said I'm hoping they aren't bad issues.

Perhaps that's why other phone manufacturers have never made an antenna like that before...

I had wondered why Apple were the "first".

Doesn't the silver bezel on the older iphones serve as the antenna? I took my 3g out of its case and touched the bezel. the signal went down from 5 to 3 bars. I've never noticed it before since it's always lived in a case since the day I bought it

Well you don't need to own an iPhone to vote in that poll, is what I was getting at.

It does, but i remember the overheating and melting issues people hyped up for the 3GS as it was launching, and nothing came out of them for me, on both my 3GS'S.

Anyone else heading for O2 in Reading in the morning? I'll be the guy who parks up pretty much straight outside on my Triumph Tiger. Hoping to arrive at 07:50 but if the queue looks silly by then, I'll probably give it a miss. My medical situation precludes standing or siting in queues for long periods.
Saying that though, there are tons of cpw, voda, orange and p4u branches around town. Maybe the queue will be split between them.
I don't think it's going to be as bad as when the 3G launched as there are so many places carrying it now. Back then it was O2 or CPW. If they were out you were sool.

Tesco told me they wont sell the phone till 9 so i am going in early for a wonder with a friend as its a 24 hour store and will just stand next the phone person when they show up :-D
