Back in from doing the Wrekin today and my god what a rush. The climb to the top was agony and never ending but the coming down was so worth it although i was down in around a minute lol. I said to myself i wasnt going to touch the brakes and i didnt.

Built up some more courage to peek down at the speedo and saw i was doing 38mph, must have been going faster than that near the top.

Can anyone recommend a decent shock pump? Well, I say decent, but I want something less than £20 inc. delivery. :p

Need to go up to about 160PSI.

i got a 'raleigh' one for £20 that has been far better quality than i ever expected . nice and sturdy , goes upto 300psi and has the 2stage method of valves used if you dont want to lose any air when attaching detatching

really happy with it considering my old shock pump was £30 and fell apart

I have the magnesium versions and they ain't holding up too well either. Half the pins have either dropped out or worn down by specs of dust. Superstar pedals suck donkey balls.

Cheers for your suggestion.

However, I ended up ordering a Beto one off eBay which will hopefully do the trick.

Having read the last few pages I think I'm coming in at a significantly lower end of equipment, but hopefully someone will be able to help me anyway :p

I've currently got a pretty standard 'mountain' bike. It cost ~£250 around 4 years ago if I remember correctly, so while it's not a Halfords basic, it's hardly high end either.

So, the point of this post: Most of the parts are a bit worn so I'm looking on primarily replacing the wheels and brakes. It's currently got (I think) 26" wheels and v-brakes. I want to replace both and, if possible, upgrade to disc brakes. Looking around on various online bike shops suggests this is going to cost an absolute fortune (£150-200 minimum).

My question is really how much should I be spending and what gear should I be going for? The bike isn't used off road an awful lot, but I like having that option available so don't want to switch to stuff that's suitable for road use only.

You could get a basic set of Deore hub based wheels for under £100. For brakes have a look for the mechanical Avid BB7's. All in that's about £160. Failing that look on the bike forums classifieds for bargains...or ebay.

Found your way home then :D

Yeah! No idea where I went, I ended up following the fire road for ages, eventually passing a large pylon and ended up high on the cliff near the nature reserve, there's some great riding up there picking your way through the rocks. Great views too. Unfortunately after that I couldn't find my way to any singletrack and ended up following fire roads until I ended up on the road! I followed that round to car park.

Id love to go back for more DH and with more of an idea of the red route :) btw that helmet went for 39 quid! Gutted.
