iOS4 allows you to open an app, do stuff, load up a seperate app, do stuff, and come back to the first and have it exactly how you left it.

iOS4 allows you to open an app, start downloading something, load up a seperate app, do stuff, and go back to the first and it has continued to download in the background.

iOS4 allows you to open an app, then open another, and have the first continue to play music, read out GPS instructions, keep a VoIP call open, etc, all while you're still doing stuff in the second app.

This seems like multitasking to me!

Nope...too hot and i expect on the weekends the store is going to be absolutely heaving with people...i went in around 5pm yesterday and there were que's for people wanting to actually have a look at one:eek:...i mean they must have had over 20 of them on display but you had loads of people just spending a fair while playing with one....dont think they were actually looking to buy one...it was stupidly ridiculous in all honesty.

Give it a few weeks and the whole hype will die down i expect.

The old Acorn RISCOS had cooperative multitasking where you had control until you gave it back.. and no threading.. I used to program ARM assembler.
Also have programmed embeded robot controllers (blackfin and have a battery life too) and the iPhone itself.

I can't see the logic of attempting to provide full pre-emptive multi-tasking on device that does not have enough CPU or memory. Yes it can be done but does the increased power overhead and impact on human task responsiveness really warrant it?

Technology should be used as a tool to achieve a goal and not be a goal in itself.

In another way - let me ask you this.. what would you prefer? A multitasking phone that has a 2 hour battery life that allows you to run games, chat clients and stream music all at once..
Or
A slightly limited functionality phone but offers a couple of days of battery time.

Personally I couldn't care less if I can't ssh into my phone.. hell I'd prefer a 2 day talk time for booty calls and spend the rest of the time with the girlie..
 
I'm tempted by an iPhone4.. I have to admit but I think I'll wait until I have a better paid job and then use it as a reward :) bit of motivation to get on and do it!
 
I got some zagg ones off of ebay for 13 quid, they should arrive next week. I'll be hitting the apple store for a bumper unless switcheasy produce a case asap, paranoid i'm going to damage my phone.

so bascially you sit there like a blob and dumbly let Apple tell you how to use your phone and what is best for you, wow anything for a simple life...

There's the non-iPhone option - simply hit the back button. :p

As I've already stated, through my understanding of the market and the current technology limitations, I can see the logic of what is being done. So can Microsoft (windows 7 mobile) and other handset manufacturers.

Additionally the US government isn't going to make any monopoly move on Apple in a time of economic crisis.

Apple built an OS around the way people want to use a mobile device. It's built to be simple, to the point and get a majority of things done in the easiest and nicest way hence being a phenomenal success.

I've always been a geek, I have had HTC phones and used custom firmwares and yes, they do have more functionality overall but ultimately due to the extra functionality there's more glitches, the important things take longer to do due to more steps etc. Plus I spent time faffing about with things to get them as I wanted. I didn't mind though as I was interested in customizing my phone at that point and enjoyed figuring out the issues and trying different things to get it exactly as I wanted it. A lot of people still enjoy and do this, great!

On the flip side, Apple have created an OS which they control that accommodates what a majority of normal people and 'geeks' want from a mobile device. I've only felt limited by the OS very few times and can't remember what I was trying to do at the time now so it couldn't have been that important.

In the end, stick to what works for you. In the future I may need something a bit more open for some reason so I might give Android a go, at the moment I don't and Apple lead the way for my purposes and many others, what's the big deal?

Why are you flaming him for having a preference? Let him do what he likes.
 
Apple's multitasking is multitasking to the user. I can do two things at once on my phone, the person is multitasking - not the phone.

Honestly, i don't care if the entire application isn't running the background. As long as it functions as i need it to, you know - pick up where i left off, continue uploading something in the background, etc.
 
Can we not just come to the conclusion that this is a phone, and imo a remarcably good one at that.

There will be better/worse phones out there, but at the end of the day, that is all down to each individuals opinion, dependant on their own needs.

Done.
