*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

Hello!

I've just started going to the gym, since getting a desk job I rarely get any exercise now and I can certainly tell when I've gained a bit of weight!

Can anyone recommend a good energy drink for when I go? lucozade makes me feel very sick! Currently starting off with cardio and then moving onto weight's which I've read is a bad thing and should be the other way around?

Not over doing it at the moment being so unfit, I've ached for days every time I've been so far :p

Also curious as to what most of you started off benching? I'm 21 but quite a small guy being 5"8 and weighing about 9.5 stone.

energy for gym = cup of coffee and a banana. Leave those energy drinks alone.

Anything else? Coffee isn't my thing nor are banana's! :( Any soft/juice to replace the coffee and will an apple or orange replace the banana?

Thanks!

Mmmmm I lurve lucoszade! :p I go to the gym at 6:30AM and wake up at 6AM so there is no time to eat. Performance without a lucoszade is abysmal. I have a little on waking and then sip the rest during my time at the gym. Works a treat. We all know its not the optimum choice but it is a compromise for performance.

Surely you could wake up earlier?

Simple carbs like fruit will give you a spike and a burst of energy.

I could you're right but it would make things just that more difficult and impractical. I already go to bed at 10 PM as it is. The other problem is eating immediately on waking is a real chore for me. My appetite is not there. It really is just a practical compromise. :)

It is by no means a substitute for a proper meal though. When I get to work I have a proper slap up post-work out meal. ;)

Don't get sucked into the whole "how much do you bench?" thing, it's meaningless. There's nothing to stop someone lowering the bar six inches and having their spotter row it back up, then boasting to you about a 120kg bench and raising an eyebrow at yours. Similar for squats!

It pays to be interested in what YOU lifted last week and what you'll lift today (hopefully more!). Don't worry about whether Freefaller struggled with 30kg at age 25 or if Morba bench pressed his dad at age 6 - they don't mean anything to you, nor does whether your bench is above or below average. There's always someone stronger than you. Just go to the best YOU can do, and always strive to improve.

My bench is awful and isnt improving at all whereas my deadlifts im happy with and are going up steadily. Plus most people who 'YO D00D WHAT CAN YOU BENCH?!?!' only do half reps
