Feel free to quiver in your fortress, but I for one don't particularly feel worse off due to my and my fellow countrymen's good nature. In fact, I'd probably say the opposite.

i don't 'quiver in my fortress' but i am aware of what is going on around me and it seems to me we get taken advantage of because of our good nature. i'm all for progress and i'm all for change but some things i personally don't want in this country, one of which is the veil. i understand the requirement for mosques but i don't want them shooting up all over the place. i respect how mosques are more often than not funded by the faith goers and would like it if COE used this system to aid with our crumbling churches but i don't want them becoming more and more common place

How are they becoming more and more commonplace? As there been a sudden increase in people converting to Islam?

It is human nature to not like (or even hate) something that we don't truly understand. Fact.

What exactly is it we don't understand? That we don't understand some useless, outdated primitive traditions created from man made superstition/religion? This is 2010, not 610 BC.

I didn't deny that there wasn't discrimination but surely this ban is no better where Muslim's are being discriminated against?

I didn't way it was. I personally am against the ban, I think they are doing the wrong thing for the right reasons. The real problem lies with the Islamic community and needs to be solved by the Islamic community. Many do quite happily intergrate but a significant minority don't and that is going to lead to tension. If you make the decision to move to another country surely you would adopt some of the culture of that nation you have moved to?

Eh?

The ban would be for the reason I stated, not for a 100% ban.

I've seen people go into stores wearing helmets, items that cover their mouths, balaclavas and not once have I thought these people are about to commit a crime.

Why not ban all these as well as the Muslim veil within a public space? It's either all or nothing otherwise this is discrimination against Muslims.

There are no Christian churches in Iran that i could find. Certainly nothing any where near as ridiculous as some of the Muslim churches. If they want to live in the UK they should change their culture to fit the UK. Not try and infect the UK with Islamic culture.

much as I think it would be funny to run past and knock off the birds hat so everyone can see her.... I don't really think there is a need to pass laws on what can and cannot be worn (within reason)..

i mean if we are going to pass laws like that, I vote give women a fitness test and if they pass they MUST wear mini skirt and black bra with white see thru blowse... of other small clothes..

So you want them to be free to make their own choices about their cultural practices, but only up to an arbitrary top-down superimposed legal limit? Because that's pretty much the definition of oppression.

Why not just admit you want to oppress certain UK citizens and then we can move on from semantics.

Again, I agree with that sentiment. I've argued that a change must occur from within, not policed by an outside force that does not have a proper understanding of the problems. The minority that don't are the ones who cause problems but banning a veil for a whole group of people due to a minority causing a problem is the wrong way to do so.

Sometimes I feel intimidated if I see a group of people wearing hoodies. Is that reason enough to ban hoodies in public places? No, it isn't.

.

it's not about me thinking they're going to commit a crime. does a person wear a balaclava 24/7? no would they wear a balaclava when picking their child up from school? in court? in a pub? in court etc etc

no

And why does it offend you so much if someone does? I've never had a problem when talking to a Muslim woman who wears a veil. I can have a conversation with them and not feel intimidated.

And that's because our nation is built on freedoms, a lot of which aren't available in Iran. Banning the veil makes our government no better than the Ayatollah's of Iran.

yes, freedoms which we are having exploited by a country which doesn't share these values. banning the veil would be our right to not want to accept this practice in this country which i believe is perfectly fair in the case of simple communication and community values aiding to better our deterorating society

I'm not against it in places where security is a must, say all ports and possibly banks but an outright ban in all public places is wrong. The French argument is that this is to help assimilate Muslims and the veil identifies them as Muslims so it must be removed to help assimilation.

In this case, should a Sikh have to remove their turban or a Jew have to remove their yarmulkes? After all, these bits of clothing identify these groups as people of different faiths.

I agree with you totally...in places like banks, airports or anywhere there is a security aspect then these women should not wear a veil and if they do then they should be asked kindly to take it off...simples but we all know the world isnt as simple as that.

Remember folks, we're all individuals.
