What have I done?!

Update - 03/08/10:

Suspension and brakes.

I was told these will need doing but haven't had a chance yet to get the car in the air to have a look at it. Today after work I decided it was time to check so at ~8am...

Yes, I am not using an axle stand, car was in the air for ~5mins whilst I had a quick check of the suspension and brakes, not worth using stands, especially on a surface as uneven as gravel.
I can't use the garage at the moment as it's full of junk. :(

Anyway, on to the suspension. First thing I noticed when I pulled the wheel off was the damper.

It should look somewhat like this one...

Basically, the rubber gromit that holds the cover to the top of damper has perished. Not actually a big deal, still works just fine but I'll look to replacing them in a while, to get the MOT this should be fine though.
Same on the driver's side.

As for the spring that is 'cracked' according to a mechanic Muffin` went to, well...

No visible signs of stress or a fracture and quite honestly as with the dampers, works just fine, I can't find any fault with it.

The car looks to be on it's original suspension I think, so it is due a refresh certainly, but it's not going to spectacularly fail the MOT on suspension (I now hope :p).

Something I did notice was that three of the springs look in as-new condition and only one of them is showing very minor signs of it's age (tiny bit of surface rust). The plastic coating on them certainly seems to do it's job well.

Fronts are basically the same really, perished rubber but perfectly working dampers and springs.

I also had a look at the brake pads all round as I was told they would need doing...but not for another few thousand miles they don't, they've had about half use if that, still loads of travel left and they stop the car very well.

As it stands, my list of parts required is rapidly decreasing, in fact, in terms of none-service items I'm left with the exhaust and the thermostatic fan switch.

Just removed the pollen filter as my aircon flow was very low and I will be putting a new one in when I sort out getting all the parts for the service...

12 year old filter...mmmm yummy!

Shocks and springs look fine to me. Don't worry about the rubber shock absorbers or the dust tubes tbh. My shocks were in a far worse state before I replaced them (including corrosion at the top of the stem), no MOT issues and they lasted several track days.

Lol at that microfilter :D

Around £750 and I'd call it a bargain. The body doesn't appear to have rust issues and the interior is also quite clean, a few hours in the garage will turn it into a £1500 car easy.

It'll be worth nowhere near that. Mine with a mot, tax and fsh cost less than £600 once I'd sorted the leaking manifold and had hardly any attention when I advertised it at £895. I'd bunged it on ebay at a £600 starting price and had no interest until a mates car died so he's borrowed it for the time being.

Well I could just remove the - and it'd be grammatically correct. I was just trying to be clever and hyphenate it, which I'm rubbish at. :p

I can't help but think something else is wrong with it instead. :p

Not at all, it'd still be incorrect.

The hypen is correct, it's just non not none. :p
I see it too often on here and it annoys me; I'm not singling you out on purpose :o

So basically there isn't much wrong with this car at all?

Seems so, which is very odd. The issues I can see it has are:

  • It needs an Inspection 2
  • It needs a brake fluid change
  • Radiator fan thermostatic switch needs replacing
  • It needs an MOT
  • It needs tax
  • It needs an exhaust

Which leads me to believe that I'll have catastrophic engine failure shortly before or after it's on the road.

Ok, noted. :) I'm all for being learned good and proper. ;)

Nice price!

Bit puzzled why the OBC has no light check control though? - I thought it was part & parcel of the OBC?

So you've not blow it up yet? Are the springs cheap, I'd consider changing them too when you sort the dampers, they can look fine but after half lunar mileage (if they really are original) they won't be as good as they could be.

Just done the brakes on the 156, all the pads were down to about 1mm, I think VDC eats them up a bit, last owner has been having fun.

tis with the 6cyl iirc

Pfft, me and DRZ offered to come give it a once over pre-MOT, and he declined so he could lease a diesel hatchback.

There's just no learnin' some people :(

It'll be a Saloon, get it right ffs
