Update - 03/08/10:
Suspension and brakes.
I was told these will need doing but haven't had a chance yet to get the car in the air to have a look at it. Today after work I decided it was time to check so at ~8am...
Yes, I am not using an axle stand, car was in the air for ~5mins whilst I had a quick check of the suspension and brakes, not worth using stands, especially on a surface as uneven as gravel.
I can't use the garage at the moment as it's full of junk.
Anyway, on to the suspension. First thing I noticed when I pulled the wheel off was the damper.
It
should look somewhat like this one...
Basically, the rubber gromit that holds the cover to the top of damper has perished. Not actually a big deal, still works just fine but I'll look to replacing them in a while, to get the MOT this should be fine though.
Same on the driver's side.
As for the spring that is 'cracked' according to a mechanic Muffin` went to, well...
No visible signs of stress or a fracture and quite honestly as with the dampers, works just fine, I can't find any fault with it.
Same on the driver's side.
The car looks to be on it's original suspension I think, so it is due a refresh certainly, but it's not going to spectacularly fail the MOT on suspension (I now hope

).
Something I did notice was that three of the springs look in as-new condition and only one of them is showing very minor signs of it's age (tiny bit of surface rust). The plastic coating on them certainly seems to do it's job well.
Fronts are basically the same really, perished rubber but perfectly working dampers and springs.
I also had a look at the brake pads all round as I was told they would need doing...but not for another few thousand miles they don't, they've had about half use if that, still loads of travel left and they stop the car very well.
As it stands, my list of parts required is rapidly decreasing, in fact, in terms of none-service items I'm left with the exhaust and the thermostatic fan switch.
