What have I done?!

So you've not blow it up yet? Are the springs cheap, I'd consider changing them too when you sort the dampers, they can look fine but after half lunar mileage (if they really are original) they won't be as good as they could be.

Just done the brakes on the 156, all the pads were down to about 1mm, I think VDC eats them up a bit, last owner has been having fun.

Why would I change just the springs? If I change suspension, it'll be the whole lot. It's about £150 for a full set of brand new standard springs and dampers. I will be changing it all, but just not for the MOT, it'll be further down the line when I've got other things sorted.

did it fix the airflow?

I've not put a new filter in, but without that one in OH MY GOD! I nearly got thrown into the back of the car! :p :D

I realised I have no engine bay pics, so just took some, I can see as soon as I open the bonnet that I have a problem...I'm missing at least two cylinders. :( :p

Rocker cover could do with a clean up, it's covered in BMW wax stuff, hence being yellow.

And have a pic of it with clean wheels.

Small engine is small :p

Glad the car seems to be working out for you though :)

It's not the size that matters, it's how you use it. ;)

Cheers Invader, that saved my next question......

No worries, I was stumped and confused by the Haynes manual and the Bentley guide, the linked one made it all much easier to understand and do. Haynes told me to do something like take the whole dash apart and the engine bay. :/

That's what I said, isn't it? I got the impression you were leaving the springs because they looked clean, but it sounds like you've got it covered.

did you check behind the couch ??

:D

on a more serious note, glad its turning into a bit of a bargain :)

Update: 11-08-10

I ordered some parts from ebay and ECP at the weekend and they turned up today at lunch time, so I cracked out the tools and set to work giving the car a nice service and some replacement parts.

I was doing the following work:
  • Engine Oil
  • Engine Coolant
  • Spark Plugs
  • Water pump/Alternator belt
  • AC belt
  • Thermostatic fan switch
  • Exhaust
  • Fog lamp

Haynes says to do the belts from below, so being the initative person I am, I did them from above, very easy, loads of space then. Removed the fan and airbox, so much space to move about in and work with, plus no need to jack the car up till I got to the stage of changing the oil and coolant.

I also replace the water pump pulley as it had seen better days...

Nice shiney new part from BMW!

Did all the belts..

Very easy with the space I had, although getting the AC tensioner set up right was a pain, but I did it and it's working fine.

The old spark plugs don't look too bad considering I don't know how long they have been in the car.

Drain and flushed the cooling system as well as drained the oil, whilst flushing the system I also then did the fan switch. Filled these up to the correct levels and it seems to be happier for it. I changed all the filters too, air, pollen and oil.

Onto the exhaust! Removing the old one was a pain, the bolts were rusty and two of the nuts rounded so had to use a gripping socket to remove them and replaced them with some fresh new ones.

Another easy install, I could have done this completely by myself but I got my brother to help by holding up the exhaust whilst I fiddled under the car with the brackets, just made it easier for me.

I also replace the foglight which I assumed was a right task due to what a friend had said, but again, simple and easy. Push screwdriver into hole, out pops lamp.

And the old one...

That's it for today, tomorrow is brake fluid change as well as an MOT (if I can book one).

Is that your house?. Looks really nice, very characterful.

Oopps!!. Sorry, what was the thread about again, BMW's or something?. :p

Haha, yeah it is. Well, not mine, parent's. :)

Normally I do all my work in the garage...

But brother's A3 is in there as is an MGB GT, so no space and the other ones are full of stuff for my uncle whilst he sorts out a new house. :(
