My new to me mondeo!

DannyW car sales?

Nah, Northern Ireland here mate, not near you!

Just off the phone with the guy, he's offered to get it from the house and fit a new engine that he's stripped down and rebuilt to make sure there's nothing wrong with it. He seemed genuinely surprised that it had failed (exploded). It's being picked up later in the week and he's going to have it ready when I get back from honeymoon. Was very polite, not at all defensive about it, which makes me think it was just one of those things.

Phew. Only bum thing is I have to drive either my old corsa for a week or my mums i20. Neither a good choice really!

your username seems apt :p

glad you got it sorted I expected to read down and hear you were having a hard time getting the guy to come good on his warranty.

proof positive not everyone in this world is a villain :)

Update:

Car's just been taken by a flatbed this morning. Part of me hopes it'll be done before I go away on wednesday, but the logical side of me is saying no way :p. Still, at least it's not annoying the neighbours just sitting there! Can't help thinking I'd have been better off with the BMW!

The mechanic has offered to run the engine in for me while I'm away. I've thought about saying no, but then thought that he probably would do it a lot better than me! What would you recommend? And how many miles would you recommend it for?

Also apologies, meant to take a video of it being run from the parking space up the trailer so you could hear the pitiful sound she's making, but I forgot :( Sorry!

I had a TDdI version of the mkIII that you have and also in the same colour.

I had three years trouble free motoring from it before I got rid as a lot of things started to go wrong but it had 130k on the clock by then.

What is the mechanic doing? Is he fitting a brand new block? If its a second hand engine he is fitting then i cant really see it needing 'running in'

Also, be sure to tell the DVLA the new engine number!

Well, after a 2 day delay, the car's back with me now! No charge at all.

However...

I'm not sure if it's because I've been driving hatches for a month, but the car feels like it has a huge lack of power under 3000 rpm. After that it picks up a bit, but it really doesn't seem normal. Could it be symptomatic of another fault, or just me inventing things wrong with it? Any advice would be appreciated!

David

Mine pulls just fine under 3k rpm

It's not exactly a lively car to drive though, its probably that your'e not used to it, the car revs up very slowly if you leave it in neutral and prod throttle. I guess it has a heavy flywheel.

Maybe a silly question but the floor mat isn't blocking the accelerator slightly is it?

ajstan, I know it's not a sporty car, but I'm 95% sure it's got a problem that wasn't there before. Current ideas are timing chain slightly out, MAF problem, vacuum problem (at the swirl plates perhaps), or some other sensor. If you could humour me for a while, would any of the problems I've listed give me the symptom I think I have?

Nope, was fine before.

A bit of an update, seems to be occuring only when run for about 5-10 mins, it's got little pulling power and the revs rise slower than they should, when it hits 3000, sudden power, and the revs rise quickly like they should. Very noticeable moving off from the lights. Any help with the diagnosis? It's possibly intermittent too, haven't had time to get a good run with it.

Any help? I'm ringing the guy tomorrow, but I'd like to have an idea first.

Glad that you got the new engine for no extra cost :)

The new problem, say if you put your foot all the way down when setting off from a set of lights for example, does the car sort of like move a bit but then it will move slowly before picking up again up to when it gets to 3K revs? Does the engine seem to hesitate/judder in a way at all?

I only ask this as on my GF's Fiesta, on some cold mornings when you go to set off the car will move off very slowly when below 2K revs (even if I put my foot all the way down it doesn't speed up at all) but once you get over 2.5K revs it wil pick up quickly again but once the engine is warm the problem disappears and the things that I was told is that it could be down to a dodgy spark plug or lead, MAF sensor or even a blocked/knackered cat converter etc.

Probably just a loose/duff sensor or something. Difficult to guess, just take it back to them and let them sort it

The opposite really, problem becomes pronounced when warm, not cold! Wierd yeah. As for your g/f's car, my mums does the same thing, limits it til the engines hot as protection. Good idea if you ask me!

I'll ring him tomorrow and see what he says. At least the car's driveable, just as long as I dont need to accelerate at low speeds. Which I do. Bummer. Will keep you all posted!
