Pro Evolution 2011

What drove you to trade in Fifa Killswitch? I've been following the Fifa thread on and off, but not noticed you complaining about it.

Gonna get this tomorrow night I think.

I traded it in for a few different reasons. Firstly, the offline modes and the AI. Now, I did buy Fifa primarily to play online clubs, but I would have at least liked the option to play offline when nobody else is online, unfortunately EA removed that option for me by making the offline modes an absolute joke. You can play against Real Madrid or Accrington Stanley and their players will behave exactly the same, trying tricks against you, lobbing balls 40 yards which always find their man, tackling you full on with studs up and getting nothing called against them but you do the same and get sent off...

Then there's the referees, I never imagined that they could make the Fifa 10 ref any worse, but they did. The linesman is a retard, he will call offsides whether the ball even reached your man or not, the referee will call a foul against you for your opponent tackling you, I've actually been red carded when I've not even made a tackle, I've been stood in the box with the ball at my feet and the CPU has slid in, the ref has blown his whistle and inexplicably sent me off. They never let the game play on either, you get an obvious advantage and the ref will still blow the whistle and call you back all the way at the halfway line or further to take a free kick incident that happened 30 seconds ago, yet if you get fouled on the edge of their box, play on and then lose your advantage the ref just waves play on, it's totally ridiculous.

So that's the offline discussed, the retarded officials and the Accrington performing roulettes and Ronaldo chops... Then there's the online where it just gets worse to be honest. If you play head to head you WILL be matched up with players who will quit the game on a very regular basis, since they reset the stats the other day (because of a stupid bug, to go along with the long list of confirmed bugs) I had played 6 games and won 6, the reason I won 6 was not because I was good, but because I scored a late goal in each of those games and then my opponent decided it wasn't worth playing on to try and draw or win. I can understand that these types of people are around, and that I can't expect everyone to be good sports, or humble in victory and defeat, but in Fifa it just seems every single one of your opponents is a complete ****.

Take it to the online clubs mode and it's even worse. If you play as ANY you get weird lag which you don't get when controlling just a single player, so that leaves you putting the ANY role in the CPU's very incapable hands. They will press when you don't tell them to, they won't clear the ball unless you actually force them to, they will run into you, they won't pass, they'll run into the opposition even if they have to dribble 30 yards with the ball to do it, they're just a massive, massive liability and we lost the majority of our games because the CPU did something retarded at the back. The only way to combat this is to give the ANY role to a human player and then it's so laggy for them that they are just as ineffectual as the CPU.

Then there's the general way that people play Fifa, it's not realistic despite what anyone says in the Fifa 11 thread. Basically it's choose team with good wingers, pass to wing, run up wing past everyone, cross, score, repeat. There's no need to mix up play because that tactic works so well that it isn't even worth playing attractive, flowing football because it doesn't work, mainly due to the fact they fudged the passing up royally. It's just a boring, bug filled mess which Fifa have tried to make more realistic by ruining the passing and all of the flow that the game used to have. Most of the bad bugs are still in there from Fifa 10 and just for good measure they decided they didn't need to Beta test before they sent the game out to the public either, here's a list of bugs that I've experienced:

Code:
The AI, specifically how low rated teams behave on high difficulties
The commentary is often wrong, wrong names for players
Extremely slow manager mode which often freezes
Annoying manager mode email for nothing eg(schedule change)
Closing manager mode inbox takes forever
Pass assistance on can make your passes random
Players shapeshifting during cut scenes/replays
Arena sometimes being an empty blue shell and the morphing you through the GK
Offsides called whether the player received the ball or not
Skills, as above Wycombe doing Ronaldo Chops and McGeady Spins
Micro pauses for 4 or 5 seconds which freeze the game
The random boot changes for real life players
Foul bugs where you make a tackle but you get a free kick
Crashes in the team management screen online
Unlimited money glitch in manager mode
Various voice comms issues, garbling/having to start comms during match
Never showing the right player during substitution cut scenes
Manager never subbing you in manager mode then saying you are too tired to play next match
Some players have the wrong haircut when the camera is zoomed out
Corner flag glitch where players run to corner flag and continually dance
Goalkeeper glitch where he catches the ball then falls over the line with it in his hands
No handballs online
Custom chants are way too quiet unless you use software to increase the decibels
That isn't even an exhaustive list, there's a massive thread over on the EA Sports forums with a lot of people complaining about more bugs than the ones I've just described. EA have released a broken game, partly broken by the fact they decided to ruin the fun of Fifa 10 and partly ruined by the fact that the game is buggier than a very buggy thing. Looking back, the only reason I actually bought it was because of the social aspect involved with playing online clubs, I can have that social aspect playing any other games with my friends, we've got MAG and will soon have KZ3 and GT5, I don't see why I bothered with Fifa.

You play MAG still?
Add me, I'm usually on it for about an hour a day, it'd be good to squad up with someone familiar.

Got £60 for a few games I traded in yesterday and I was only allowed store credit so picked up PES and MAG. :p

I've no idea how to play it apart from the "obvious try and shoot people without dying" strategy. Only played something like 4 games! :o

I was perhaps a little bit :p

In truth though, the FIFA 11 demo is better than the FIFA 11 full game, it feels paced better and the passing among other things is better too.

I'm not sure what happened with EA, but on the release day they seem to have got worried about it, and hit the panic button which was that release day patch, which in turn made the game take a step backwards toward FIFA 10.

I posted the exact same thing on another forum - I think I used the term "bottled it". So many good ideas, that they decided against just before release day.

Cheers for that - sums up a lot of what i feel about the game. Got bored of Manager mode 10 games into the season as it just just the same game over and over.

Totally agree about the refs and the tackling system. Giving away penalties when you're not even holding press or sprint is a sure fire way of me smashing a controller or two.

I've found some annoying bugs and I think Fifa will be like this for a while. It seems they are always a few months behind themselves. They've always got a load of bugs - some of which they sort in the first month or so after release. Then there's UT in November - by that time any unfixed bugs will remain that way. That probably gives them 7 or 8 months to work on the new one before it gets to demo stage. They'll add another load of "marquee" features to sell the new game, will run out of time and release another buggy game while all along forgetting about refining the gameplay.

Online I am just having so many dull games. I really hated it at first as I tried to play it in "Fifa 10 mode", but then I adapted and started to be more patient. It got better, but I still feel that every game is a slog. It's claustrophobic and just not really that enjoyable. They say the pitch is the same size as 10, but it doesn't seem that way to me.

Watched a few PES vids earlier - looks like so much more space to play in.

Also - MAG, it's a great game if you stick with it. Feel a bit clunky at first, but once you get used to it and find a few people to work with it really is good. A lot of depth\strategy to some of the later game modes.

I'm so glad that my local Asda had sold out of Fifa 11 when I thought if I could get it for £25 it wouldn't be so bad if it turned out crap. Looks like even at £25 it would have been a rip off. Manager mode is what I would have played the most if I'd bought it, lucky escape it seems. Manager mode in Fifa 10 bored me to tears, you would have thought they would have at least fixed that in 11.

Spurs being licensed is just an added bonus. :D

Will have to install the option file later today.

Everything about this feels like you're watching a real match.

Turn off any additional HUD and it looks awesome.

I'm not sure if you noticed when I posted this Skip, but the option file settings apply online, so if you play online as Arsenal for example, you get their proper kits and so on too.

So there is literally no downside to it not being licensed, but yes, Spurs and Man Utd are a small bonus :p

Yep I saw that. :)

I wish PES had a Clubs mode...

So not bought a football game since fifa 99 I decided to buy fifa 11, mainly as my mate loves it and plays a lot of club matches. I think it's pretty poo tbh. Doesn't matter if I play as Spain or Blackburn Rovers the AI players just stand their looking retarded, the passing is rubbish and auto aims. Not a single player runs up to Support Torres when playing Spain, Villa and Iniesta may as well not be on the pitch.

Loads of bugs and the most annoying is the slight tap of shoot key results in a goal 100% of the time!

Only paid £25 for it so hopefully I can sell it on here...

Is PES actually any better? Downloading the ps3 demo now but my interwebs are gash.

I've carried on my master league and I'm in 8th position with 20 odd games to go. The only think that looks weird still are the long range shots which look like they are going slightly too slow, but when i look back on the replays it's just fine.

I love the fact it's almost impossible to roll the ball from your keeper to a defender, ping a pass to midfield, ping one to a winger and then cross it in for a potential chance. It's a much more slower paced game to last year and possesion really matters.

The L stick skills being pre assigned is nice, purely because i would have never used them. Now i can, i do and i lose the ball loads trying to do ridiculous 4 step skills :D

*checks prices...*

Still £35 :(

*leaves unsatisfied...*

£32.99 in Morrisons.

Bought it last night and had a few games. I'm going to take Robbo's advice and give it 15 games or so. The first game I had was awful - I felt like I had no control at all. I'm playing with default controls (apart from swapping cross and shoot) so after a few years of Fifa I'm like a fish out of water.

Second game was better though and then played online and it was getting better still. I went into Training mode and messed about with the dribbling and tricks. I'm getting there and there is a lot to like. The production values are infinitely better than Pro Evos I've played in the past. The intro to Champions League was a surprise.

Still have reservations though - the passing is not manual, not by a long way. Although the fact you can do a manual pass at any time by holding LT is a great idea and works really well. Played my first couple of games on Amateur and the keepers are awful. I upped the difficulty to Top player in training and they seemed a lot better, but that was only a few minutes so will ahve to see what they're like in a game.

I also noticed you can set a difficulty online - does that just affect the keepers?

I'm sticking with it though - I don't think it's fair to pass judgement until I'm 100% with the controls and that could take a while.
