It is set at a different time period though when Jedi were two a penny :) Not to mention it is a game, you are meant to play the rae and elite, let the NPCs be the fodder!

But even at thier peak the jedi where few in number.

I preferred X-wings over lightsabers back in the day. Need I remind you what blew up both Death Stars? :p

One of the reasons I liked Empire Strikes Back is the Jedi\Sith's conflicting instincts turn out to be completely wrong in the face of sheer human determination (Han Solo evading Vader's taskforce, Luke's leap of faith, Lando coming full circle at Cloud City). You just can't beat the Galactic Civil War era...
 
I'm looking forward to trying this, but I do have some trepidation. I think anyone who is looking for an SWG replacement will be disappointed (and I am one of them) as this will be completely different.

The one thing that rams this home for me is how every time I've read something about this game, the developers have repeatedly used the word 'heroic' when talking about the playing experience. Everything has to be heroic. But not everyone wants to play a heroic character.

This is what I loved about SWG, it's sandbox approach and it's skills-based system. You could mix and match what you wanted to be and if that was a pure crafter or an entertainer, then so be it. I remember how respected the real top crafters were on the server I played on, and I loved how complicated the game could be at times.

I will definitely give SWTOR a try, it would be rude not to see what BioWare can offer after all their successes. I just hope they attempt to cater for all and not just the people who want to be 'heroic' all the time.

As a side note, I've recently had another look into how the SWG emulators are getting on and things have moved on considerably - one team pushes their re-written code to their test server tomorrow. Been playing it a bit here and there and would definitely do so properly again once they get it all up and running permanently.
 
The problem is most if not all MMO's released since SWG are utter crap. The only MMO i've stuck with is DAOC, its dated but it works.

Hopefully Guild wars 2 will be worth buying. I want TOR to be brilliant but i fear it will end up like the rest.

I wish mmo developers would bloody well stop trying to make each and every player feel special and 'heroic' in an mmo. Three thousand people in a game world and every single one of them gets to save it single handedly - it drives me absolutely nuts.

Just give us the world, and the opportunities to do heroic stuff ourselves, instead leading us by the hand through an instance that is completely removed from the rest of the game and slapping a "you saved the world!" achievement on our bio :mad:

This sums up my feelings on the subject too, DAoC was the king of MMOs in my eyes. After the failure that was WAR, I'm getting my guild geared up for GW2, but hopefully I'll be able to drag a few folk with me to try TOR out too. I'm sure it won't take much convincing. :)

I really want TOR to work as I'm a massive star wars fanboy. SWG was a fail in my eyes, was fun for a good while due to all my old friends that used to play, but I bailed out at JTL - being an XvT/XWA veteran, it just didn't cut it.

I have completely different expectations for TOR, but I am concerned that it'll just be a WoW clone with a different IP. If it turns out like this, I'll still play it for quite some time as the story will likely be a lot more compelling for me than WoW was, but I will definitely feel that an opportunity has been missed.

I'm already disappointed by the fact that TOR seems to be a very traditional MMO barring the massive story elements, and can't help but feel all hope for innovation in current MMOs sits in the lap of ArenaNet's GW2. I think I was probably naive to think that TOR could break the mould, but I'm sure glad that at least one major player in the industry are intelligently questioning conventional MMO design and replacing stagnation with innovation.

Crikey, now theres a sentence that could have come directly from the GW2 PR department :)

IMO Innovation in MMOs began to die after UO, so few MMOs ever even came close to having the features that UO had, Daoc innovated a little (but still missed out most of the features of UO), since then its pretty much been a stale genre.

Haha, yeah, I'm fairly excited by what I've seen of GW2 tbh, again though I think they're taking the right path, but who knows until we can try it. It just makes me a little sad as star wars is my favourite IP, but unlike GW2 where every video I see impresses more, every video (barring the cinematics) I see of TOR just leaves me feeling a bit flat... Ah well, the proof of the pudding is in the eating and all that. :)

SW:TOR is heading down the road to becoming a single play RPG masquerading as a MMO, game is very much aimed at the single player.

To be fair Bioware are only just revealing details of the mmo aspects of the game. Keeping your powder dry is sensible, save the best for the last few months before release.
 
Haven't been following this too much, so don't really know how it's looking to be. Big fan of both BioWare and Star Wars. Never played any MMO before, so this may be my very first experience...I'm a bit scared of that :eek::o;)

Get on the official website or look at Darth Hater, it's looking very good. Fully voiced, lots (looking at 20+) of planets to explore. Looking like plenty of customisation too. Although you sound like a bit of a cynic or maybe mmo's just aren't for you?
