*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

I just don't see how they can get all of their money back. Even with a few dedicated Star Wars fans remaining after release. What was the estimate on voice overs? 300 million or so? Also, is this going to be instanced?

Well an estimate is just that so I wouldn't give that too much credance. Bioware and Lucas Arts are both in it for the money so I don't see them spending more than they can recoup knowingly. There are a lot of Star Wars fans and as I read 1 millions subs will be break even for them.

If this is half as good as it looks we'll be discussing the pros and cons of the game in 5 years time...

so is this game going to be just another waste-of-time mmo that won't last for more than 2 months? :/

Depending on who you ask its either going to be :

a) Alright, another MMO, no worse or better than most MMOs
b) Yet another MMO that people hype up prior to release as being the next best greatest MMO ever, then everyone buys it and 4 weeks later only 5 of them are still playing it
c) Absolutely rubbish overhyped cack doomed to failure
d) The most astonishing amazing MMO yet created by a company which never ever fails to deliver and will do again.

Take your pick. :D

The biggest "meh" to me regarding this game is the art direction and the animations and designs.

I know the core game will shine through irrespectively of what it looks like, and I'm not a graphics whore. However I cant help but feel incredibly disappointed by the way this game looks. It just doesn't "feel" Star Wars. The areas/environments all look similar in that they're all huge open areas, even a corridor on a spaceship is wide enough for 20 people to stand in- jump about and fight etc. Places that should really be a small- low ceiling type room, are instead warehouses with a few items in the corner and a ceiling that reaches to infinity.

The animations look awful too, simplistic and non-fluid. Like the characters themselves who look like that damned new Star Wars cartoon. Its all blocky and simply doesn't represent anything that I love about Star Wars.

Whoever decided to go in this direction made a mistake IMO. Its like they're aiming for a new generation of Star Wars fans that grew-up with the Clone Wars style of SW, instead of the original fans of the series. The problem here is, the new lot of fans dont really care about SW in the same way the older more traditional fans do.

With the way that this game seems to be going, i.e not a true MMO but more of a co-op singleplayer, then I just cant see it lasting that long. It wont downright fail, but I'm almost certain its the last $300mil MMO we'll see for a long time.

Bioware should stick with doing what they do best, and that is a making amazing offline RPGs. I'm still butt-hurt that Knights of the Old Republic 3 wont be coming ><
At least we've got Mass Effect 3 coming.

Stuff about the art direction

Can't say I agree with you there...are you still thinking of the very first pics that were released, before the community flipped and Bioware revised the look?

There's still a slight cartooney look, but they don't have that silly stylised look the cartoon has :

Ah but i very much doubt the 'original star wars look at feel' is a key demographic in the marketing of this game. Just as Lucas wont give his fans the originals on blu(e)-ray, just as the London 2012 Olympics has had its soul stripped out and replaced with kiddie gimmicks, the young are where the money is at and your expectations are at the bottom of the pile.

Just have a look at http://www.starwars.com/theclonewars/, with regards to the in game screen shots above and let your expectations die now, before you get hurt later on :p

STO looks all right in screenshots too :)

My expectations are low, which may help me to like it more when I get to play it.

The correct way to be, with any media that you aren't in control of it's best to leave your expectations at the door. It just leads to disappointment and can prevent you enjoying something new, who knows there may be a lot of very pleasantly surprised people;)

Just got an email saying I had been accepted into the beta running from 22nd - 24th of November.

Pretty excited just to see what it's like.

Your account has been selected to participate in the Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ Game Testing Program. You have been invited to specifically test Ord Mantell where you can play as either the Republic Trooper or Smuggler between the dates of November 22nd through November 24th.

We have divided our testing sessions into several groups - each focused on testing a specific set of game features. So if you decide to decline this specific test, you are still eligible to participate in future tests of Star Wars: The Old Republic, though there is no guarantee that you will be selected again.

I know you are not suppose to tell anybody, but do you think you could do abit of a report on the game? Including screenshots? You don't have to, but it would be nice for all of us that are waiting for this game.
