*****Official Star Wars: The Old Republic Thread*****

I'm too used to not paying for MMO's now, i like lifetime subscriptions, i don't feel like my money is going to waste when i miss a few days of gaming. If ToR has a lifetime subscription and a free trial [if they produce one] and it turns out to be decent, i'll buy it.

Is the beta happening now? Or does anyone know when it will?

I applied a while ago but not heard anything...

Yeah it's happening. They're doing it in play tests of set periods at a time at the moment with no guarantee that if you're in one you'll be in the next one. Or at least that was the last word on it.

Have you heard from anyone what it's like? Or have they been good and not spoken to anyone about their experience? :p

No idea, apparently there's some info kicking around on the beta leaks sites but i'm trying to refrain from looking for any. I've burned myself too many times being in betas for big games never mind reading biased or ill formed reviews of an incomplete game. Even if i get acceted for this one i don't want to play it, i want to wait until release in the hope that it's a game i can stick with, i haven't found an MMO i can for a few years now.

There're a couple of threads on mmorpg.com by someone who got kicked out of the beta, there might be some info in them.

I just hope it fills the hole in my heart where SWG once lied :p

It is unlikely as they are going to be very different games. For a start they are not making the monumental ****-up that SWG did when they released and allowing you to play Jedi from the get go.

I know they are going to be very different games - but I feel that the Star Wars Universe deserves a decent MMO - I just hope this is it :D

SWG pre-"****-up" was the best thing ever :D

Must admit that what interest I did have has pretty much gone now, not a big fan of Sci-fi games anyway (theres something Naked Gun like about people with lasers standing 3m apart and shooting at each other, the video I saw where the player crouched behind a wall , standing up shooting at the AI soldier literally stood on the other side of the wall, then ducking down again and repeating that until the AI soldier died was like a scene from Police Squad :) )

Also been burned all too often on MMOs (which are always heralded as being the next great thing prior to release and then afterwards are heralded as being pants), particularly in such MMOs based on big name licences.

I'll leave it for now, maybe if people are still excited about it 6 months after release I'll take a look if it hasnt nosedived Star Trek Online style before then.

I disagree. While it did a reasonable job of letting you live in the Star Wars universe it was absolutely rubbish when it came to make you feel like you were in the movies.
I wasn't looking to "feel like I were in the movies" - This is exactly the reason why they messed it up in the first place - because they wanted people to "feel like I were in the movies" :p

Lolcano.

I am not a wow fan at all these days but silly statement is silly. The only thing that will "kill" wow is a new blizzard mmo combined with them stopping developing wow either that or a nuke on blizz hq and all their server hubs :p

it's too successful and customer friendly these days.

On topic I would play this game to see kotor story develop as you can apparently play the mmo single player if you want too but I see the mmo side of the game bring a belly flop.

I like WoW and played from early beta but Blizzard succumed to adding grind instead of content. It's an old game now, it has been seen and done by millions many of whom are looking for something new and different. It doesn't even have to be revolutionary, change is as good as rest as they say.

People will go to this and as I have faith in the people behind Bioware they'll make it good enough to hold people's attention. As for the mmo side of things, as stated by someone at Bioware, "they're not stupid" they have the advantage of seeing WoW and what works. It won't be UO it won't please everyone but it will be good and it will be popular and from what has been shown so far I'm happy to stick my neck out;)

Moving it to the movie theme was what killed it.

No, what killed it was completely changing the style of game it was so long after it had launched. Anyone that wanted it to be a "movie theme" game had already long given up on it and anyone still playing it liked it as a "universe simulation". Whoever came up with the "Lets make a Star Wars MMO without Jedi" was frankly an idiot.

Right off the bat, art assets are not a beta flaw. Making a model, skinning and animating it you get it right the first time. If beta was used to critique art work, everything would end up looking like picasso.

When you say animations are not a beta flaw you just made your entire post void of credibility. It's very common for early version to use stock/basic movement animation/pathing and such. Even lighting/shading could be in a basic form and making the world look horrible.

Heck, movement is still messed up sometimes other people/ai warp from place to place or bounce up and down unreasonably.

So in this you can be a jedi from the start?

lol going to be interesting that the rare and elite jedi outnumber the rest of the galaxy's population :p
