i started downloading wow this morning, 5.5Gb and the timer at the side says 78hours remaining after already being on 10 hours

my internet is with sky which costs me an arm and a leg due to me not living in a sky area

surely this isn't right for "up to 8mb/s" broadband?

if anybody else has experienced this problem any and all advice would be greatly appreciated as this is taking the ****

664kbps download in the speed test is fine for upto 8meg broadband, it just depends on the area your in. I was stuck with 280kbs last year on the 8meg package due to being in a crap area for broadband.

As for the slow warcraft download, probably something to do with their updater (it uses p2p doesnt it?) and not having the right ports open in your router, there was a thread somewhere here last week with someone having issues updating, if not check the wow forums.
 
I had the same issue and kind of still do as my internet connection is really bad.

I got some really good advice on these very forums. Basically I got a broadband accelerator and updated the firmware on my router. managed to double my speed, though it is still a lot worse than yours. :)



78 hours is a lie as I downloaded BC2 in 14 hours at 174Kbps.

dont get me wrong but isn't yours nearly 4 times the speed?

also its not just wow its everything. pictures load up like dial up and i have just bought fallout nv and thought "lovely i'll put the disk in and it will be ready to play in ten minutes, no silly downloads" but before it even starts reading the disk i have to download 4Gb of **** from steam at 60 poxy kb/s. WHAT THE HELL IS ON THE DISK THEN!! :mad::mad::mad::mad::confused:

im starting to think iv just wasted a grand buying a pc for gaming

I can dl at max 330k. I still use Steam. An overnight dl is still faster than it coming by post.

In the WoW downloader, go into the options and turn off P2P downloads. That actually makes it go way faster for me.

Edit hmm you get 60k from Steam, sounds like something's wrong.

I think I've found your problem...



664KB/s is ok for 8Mb, most you can get is in the mid 800s. Might be that Sky severely cap P2P downloads so you might not be seeing anywhere near that.

Just done some very rough* estimates:
5.5 GB = 80hours
5.5 GB = 5632 MB
5632 MB = 5767168 KB
5767168/288000 (seconds in 80hours) = 20.0248KB/s for 80hours = 5.5GB download.


So yup, either the WoW download manager is crap, or Sky are throttling the P2P.





*I can't stress how rough these are or how little effort went into them, if mistakes have been made then it's a damn shame.



Edit: I assume the speedtest numbers mean KB/s rather than Kb, otherwise yes that is ridiculously slow.

I wouldn't be too pleased if I was only getting 664Kbps download speed (just over 1/2 meg) Have you checked the speeds at different times of the day ie morning evening and after 10 or 11,
sometimes companies throttle the line way down from what it is capable of during peek hours.

664 isn't too bad, i'm on phone line 8Mb and peak i get 867, but thats only about 5am usually it hovers between 6-800 most days
 
664Kbps is utterly horrendous for an 8Mb package in this day and age, how far away is your local exchange?

Downloading at 60KB/s must be incredibly annoying.

Edit - some people in this thread are confusing Kbps with KB/s - he's getting about 0.6Mb on an 8Mb connection, he's not getting 660KB/s downloading, it's about ten times slower than that.

i appologise 60kb/s was a bit of an exageration this is what i see in steam...

the exchange is about half a mile away from my house

No you weren't confusing anyone, it's just their own inability to understand the difference between Kbps and KB/s.

Half a mile though, you should be much better.

I suggest posting in the networking forum in the help section and having someone help you find your line stats and so on - you should be able to get much better than what you get really, something isn't right somewhere along the line.
 
Don't blame the pc, blame the copper wire connecting you around the world.

Just to rub salt in the wound and hopefulyl prompt you to look for a better net connection my stats are 8.2mb down 0.68 mb up.

Giving me around 1.2mb/ps download. :)

it just gets me really angry that when i buy a game on a disk i cant just install it and play it, in all seriousness what are games manufactures doing ?

If you have Fallout on disc, you should be able to install it from disc. Sometimes it doesn't work though and starts to install from Steam, but there are workarounds to force it back to disc if you google.

bt say my line can hold 6-8mbps and whe i phoned sky to complain i got a foreigner (i'll not say from which country :rolleyes:) tell me "i've just speed checked your line and you are currently recieving 8.3mbps" he then done this remote access thingy and reset my router which he then could not get working again. in the end he told me to, in his words, "get the router sorted and call back". he then hung up
 
Use a different speedtest, that one is terrible. I just tried it out and it tried to tell me i have 17,584kbps download speed when in reality i have more like 50,000kbps / 6000KB/s ish. The fact that it only goes to 20meg is a dead give away it's an out of date speed test.

32KB/s on Steam... i'd be phoning up the broadband provider and giving them hell, if they didn't fix it i'd move to another company. Even 3's mobile pay as you go dongle gives me about 300KB/s. BT's up to 8meg connection used to give me about 800 - 900KB/s.
