Just wondering what does the installation exactly consist of?

Also do they bring the hardware with them (modem, n-router and usb n-dongle) or do they send that in the post?

run a cable in, setup modem, phone up control wait for 20mins for an answer, register the modem and activate line. Check it works and leave.

they bring everything. Don;t be scared to tell them where you want the cable run and do it neatly etc. they will run it the fastest way, but all have been happy with me telling them, where I want it ran, extra cabling in case I rearrange room and what not.

cheers AcidHell2 - I already have a 20Mb connection with them - does all the above still apply?

Also they are supplying me with a D-Link DIR-615 Router - are they any good? - i've been hearing some horror stories of how carp they are?

My installation is tomorrow so will let you know.

Not sure if I should get it setup in the bedroom or in the lounge/kitchen. There is already an old telewest point in the lounge so would expect that is where they will put it.

get them to put a cable in at both places.

if you already have 20mb I doubt they will need to do any cabling, just plugging in the router and activating it.

haven;t had any problems with the router so far.

i just hope the N standard router has better range than my current G one. Just need an extra 5-8 meter coverage.

£60 charge for installation to just plug in the modem!?
£20 for activation aswell!

I am not sure what service was there originally it was there before we moved in.

Hopefully if they can I will get them to put 2 points in.

Gutted, Virgin engineers arrived at 4:30 (in the dark) and plugged the router in, they said it would be 5 minutes seeing as the old telewest connection was there. Sadly they could not get a lock on it. So they went outside checked the lines, said the line had been cut, patched it back in, still could not get a lock. Went back outside, checked some other wires but still no lock.

They're coming back in the daylight on Monday to see if they can find a cable that works. They pointed out this road had been cabled here since 2003 so things should be easy.

If they don't fix it Monday then there could be another month wait until they get a repull in to recable.

Another month to wait, mannnn I already waited a month for this !!

I have the free installation but have to pay activation - are you a new customer?

Also can you find out if your hardware is posted to you or will the engineer bring it on install day?

It will have if you have an N device for it to connect to.

I will be using the supplied D-Link DWA-140 N USB-Adapter - and i hope it does work properly.

I'm getting upgraded to 50Mb for practically free (£3 extra p/m), from 20Mb.

They've completely messed up their 20Mb service, so thought I'd try out 50Mb. If it's still broken after upgrading on Thursday I'll be leaving swiftly.

.

I have been a customer for years. The promo is free install, activation and 6 months at half price but I am coming from 10 meg so don't know if that makes a difference.

I am still paying £25 for the 10m which shows how long I have had it..

When they came over to install it at mine I made them both a Cup of Tea and were more than happy to put the cable all around the back of my living room, drill a hole in the wall to my bedroom and put cable tidies everywhere and clean up after themselves. Had a chat with them about it afterwards aswell, guy said he was working 50 hours a week at Virgin, and told me all about the other people he's installed Broadband for. Nice guys :)

ahh , on my upgrade i'm not tied into another 12 month contract. i can jump back down to 20Mb after 1 month and keep the shiny new hardware :D
