Need for Speed Hot Pursuit

A decent enough game in its own right although I thought this before from videos, and I still think it from playing: this is NOT a Need For Speed game in any way except the name. It is Burnout. Well, it is Burnout stripped of all the game modes except for races, time trials and takedowns.

This game IS NFS, it's what NFS is! What about the original Hot Pursuit? The best one until Shift.

Anyhoo, this is bobbins on my G25, I cant change the deadzone and have to turn my wheel a long way before it even registers I've turned it.

No i'm fairly sure it's only automatic. ON the note re Burnout Paradise - personally I prefer this iteration - maybe it's the way they have handled the autolog but it just works very well and the racing sid is fast and furious. Need for Speed wise I prefer it to most wanted, shift is a differet kettle of fish - personally I preferred Grid to that but different games tbh

Yep auto only.

So far I prefer this to Burnout Paradise which I was never that taken by. The worst thing about BP was that during races you had to do your own navigating, which meant you spent half the time looking at your minimap and working out what turn to take, rather than just concentrating on driving fast! :) Thankfully NFS HP is back to closed off routes so you can't get lost!

The original Hot Pursuit didn't have this extreme drift mechanic as the only way of getting round corners remotely quickly, like in OutRun 2 or Ridge Racer :D

Anyway that is an old game, times have moved on and the modern spiritual successor to Hot Pursuit is surely Most Wanted which has the most epic police chases in video game history!

However, this game is fun and the races and police chases are exciting and have a great feel to them.

Ok I hated the demo on PS3, but decided to get it on PC, as I just cannot resist a Criterion game, and from all the reviews being good then I must have missed something...

Anyway, it's not bad on PC actually, did a freedrive with the lamborghini, and I can see that the drift mechanic is a lot better than I thought from the demo.

The problems I have though are :

1) muted engine sounds, this is almost a game breaker for me, if a patch doesn't sort this out then i'm going to have to get it for PS3 (which has proper loud engine sound)

2) performance is a bit up and down with my system, it suffers from big frame drops, and i think these occur more often than not when text is written to the HUD, so I believe it might be an ATi driver issue.

All in all, it's a lot better than I thought it would be, but it just needs a bit more work to sort out a few issues with PC version.

I'm tempted to wait it out, and if patch doesn't come, then grab it on PS3.

Is there any rain in this game? A couple of races the road has been soaking wet and it sounded like it was raining heavily, but I couldn't see any falling from the sky :D

Re the sound, it all seems muted - even the music. The music blasts out when you load the game up, but once you start a race it's all softer. I have it set to max volume in the settings which it is by default.

Hi dirtydog. I notice that you have an audigy 4 like me , I wonder if the muted ingame sounds, particular engine sounds, are caused by an issue with the creative drivers ? I do have onboard audio so will test that in the morning and see if it sorts it.. Doubtful though as I have seen quite a few forum posts regarding this issue.

The same dev/publisher who promised the earth with Burnout on the PC, which to be fair was great then did naff all with it afterwards, they didnt even give us the Cops and Robbers DLC :(

I await this on Steam.

D2D and Impulse versions are not available outside North America.

Glad I'm not the only one suffering muffled engine noise and I can't hear the music so turned it off..

The handling also, well it erm sucks. Even for arcade. Its drift around the corners or bash the barrier to slow down.

However the motorway (highway.. lol) chases as a copper are the most fun I've had in ages. You really do feel like a cop chasing down a speed freak, as you nip in out out of traffic. And its not light traffic in places either. I've had to slam the brakes on a few times as the lines are all full of traffic, and racing head on the other side of the motorway is scary.

Great idea, good graphics and superb sense of speed etc... Just iffy handling, but I can get over this, as the core of the game is 9/10 for me. Very addictive and very entertaining...

Almost certainly the game itself is to blame, I reckon.

Really, wow I honestly would have thought 1920 x 1080 or 1920 x 1200 displays were quite common now. Well thats good news for many then as lower res, should mean even better performance..:p

Most computers bought in the shops are lower resolution that that. Also serious PC FPS gamers will either have a CRT or 120hz TFT and until recently 120hz TFT meant 1680x1050.

It depends how muffled you mean, it's quiet but i've not found it an issue so far. I've got onboard realtek drivers.

tried this with a G25 and sadly it's awful, surely all they had to do was take the PC Burnout Paradise engine and build Hot Pursuit around that? the game was practically easier with the keyboard... such a shame as the idea's behind the game are appealing but it's a terrible port... shame on you criterion !!

the engine sounds is a JOKE i had my volume maxed out.. damn you can hear the birds in the background better than the actuall engine on 8k rpm.. :/ BORING.

I tried a few games online (against randoms), it was fun and the online matchmaking and gameplay works well. Didn't win any matches though, the opposition is much harder online :p If you don't take the shortcuts then you have little or no chance of winning a race against a player who does take them.

I've already played it for about 7 hours which is 3 hours longer than the entire Black Ops SP campaign took me :D
