Thoughts on Guns N' Roses?

As Axl, Slash and Izzy, they came up with some of the best hard rock / blues inspired stuff of the past 20 years. I won't go through em as many have been cited in this thread already.

But, as people have said, the Axl rose show that is touring under the name of G n' R is simply nothing more than a cover band, and Axl has quite simply gone bonkers. He was never far from being a frankly racist insane person as it was (and undoubtedly this is why he and Slash just couldn't work together any more as Slash seems like a much more amiable fellow).

Slash as a solo act on the other hand is still a joy to watch. He has surrounded himself with people who don't try and be Axl, and have their own work of merit which he joins them in. Just have a listen to the "Slash live in Manchester" gig from July if you can find a copy (only a few thousand were pressed as a live recording, they now sell on the bay for upwards of £100...).

Axl rose was a great showman and had a decent voice, Slash is a superb musician, The G n' R that mattered had them both in all wrapped up solidly by Izzy Stradlin.

So, what do I think of G n' R? I think that they were a genuine top shelf hard rock band until 1993 (i'll let them have The Spaghetti Incident?) but after that, they simply became the solo career of Axl Rose who is so egocentric he can't see that all they were was a joint effort and not him alone.

Saw them at Reading Festival this year, good 'show' but by the time they'd all kept us waiting for ages (band before got off the stage about 9.20 in time for 10 GnR and I believe they came on at about 10.45 so left us all standing in a cold dark field for 1hr25minutes) so I couldn't really enjoy the performance.

I'd never pay to see them again, although what they did play was good.

Live and Let Die, I know it's a cover but it's a brilliant one.
November Rain
Knockin' on Heaven's Door, another excellent cover.
Civil War
14 Years

couple of others I can't think of off the top of my head, both albums are worth a listen.

Missed a couple...

Double Talkin' Jive
Locomotive
Pretty Tied Up

More importantly - Breakdown. Superb track. Oh and Estranged. :D

Chinese Democracy is their best album so far

They would have been a great live band if they had somebody who could actually sing live.
My favourite track by them is another cover called Hair Of The Dog.

The classic line up will always be remembered as being unstoppable. Appetite for Destruction is pure working class song writing to the core, played by musicians who were, songwriting wise, unsurpassed in that era. Fusing blues, rock and punk to make this sound that ending be defining the pure hedonistic rock n roll/hard rock sound.

Use Your Illusion I and II would have been a really great record if it were condensed into one disk, and Axl's ear for a great tune and grandiosity worked well, in places, next to three hard rock aficionados.

He's still capable of writing a decent tune. Largely I think the attitude towards current 'Guns n Roses' is a bit harsh, because there are some passable tunes on Chinese Democracy that just scream out for the touch of Izzy, Duff and, of course, Slash.

Worth mentioning is "It's 5 O'clock Somewhere", of which there are rumoured to be recordings of the whole album sung by Axl. This should have been the GnR album that followed UYI - not as good as Appetite but better than UYI, it might have been slightly stronger with Axl taking part in proceedings. It's sad that it never was a GnR album cause there are a couple of corkers on there.

Been his look since long before he joined GnR.

Slash is better at being Guns n Roses, with Myles Kennedy now, compared to the sham that is GnR now.

I would echo a couple of the posts here and say they were a quality band and are worth delving into for some very worthwhile songs they have behind the mainstream 'classics', but the modern incarnation is based on Axl Rose's ego and hence is utterly toss, as is 'Chinese Democracy'.

In case anyone needs further proof as to why Slash was the musicians favorite while he was in G n' R, and why G n' R simply doesn't sound right without him (or Izzy, he gets forgotten too often), here's a (10 minute...) solo session from Slash from the Live in Manchester CD. The first bit is just a nice blues solo, but in the second half he does his signature Godfather theme tune, it's awesome. Apologies, there's no video (there are recordings on yt, but no one has mixed it in with the good CD audio).

Anyone who knows their blues guitar playing will hopefully appreciate that's a damn fine player at work right there!

Appetite and Illusions for me only. Rest is pretty average.

Seems to be lack of love for "Get in the ring" on Illusion! It's a great song!
