whats the most serious illness/health problem you've had

I've been through quite a horrendous amount of pain, though due to my tolerance I find it's difficult to accurately convey the severity of it to others - especially doctors, who I find exceptionally dismissive if you aren't literally screaming like some salary-dodger.

I've suffered chronic manic depression for about 13 years, but handling it decently well at the moment. My experiences are well documented in historic depression threads on OCUK.

INCREDIBLE pain due to a Heliobacter Pylori infection which was aggravating a stomach ulcer. This went on for literally 4 years of tests before my then-girlfriend looked up the symptoms and marched me off to the docs with a printout of what it was. That pain was horrific - I couldn't sleep more than an hour or two most nights without having to get up and down painkillers. Nearly ruined me.

Now, I have the aforemented depression and also random onsets of gout in the ankle/knee. Pain from gout stands as the single most excruciating experience I've ever encountered. When I feel it coming on, I just want to lie in bed for a week or two until it passes. Not funny whatsoever.

have severe anxiety too myself, lasted about 2 years so far, all my fault though as is drug/alcohol induced.

anxiety really is horrible, and i barely considered it an illness at all before it struck. it's double edged as you know the issue doesn't really exist/you're creating it, but it still affects nonetheless. i hope you're managing well mate :)

I've had two DVT's, one in each leg. Both very painful, the second one excruciatingly so. I had a week when I could not move because of the pain. They took six months or so to clear completely, although my left leg is still not quite right. I'm now permanently on Warfarin, which should stop it happening again.

Gout, Its the worst pain I have ever had in my life.

I have Gout too. Had it for over 2 years. In those 2 years I've had 6 acute attacks and constant numbess in my big toe on my left foot. Not had any attacks anywhere else but suffer from stiff hips if I sit down for too long and I get sharp pain in my knees.

I thought I broke my foot the first episode I had a few years ago. Not fun.

What meds are you on and what diet do you follow?

Also had norovirus a few a months ago which was terrible. I'd rather suffer from gout pain than norovirus.

Cut the top side of my thumb off on a machine at work, from the nail tip to the bottom knuckle and about halfway through my thumb, lost a lot of bone due to it shattering when it hit the blabes. was in hospital for two days.
My work collegue was shocked when I went to him and said "i've had a whoopsie" then started taking pictures on my phone.

Also had a motorbike accident that left me with a busted knee. Snapped ACL, torn maniscuss, torn PCL, torn cartalige.
After the accident I was laying on my side, I tried to lift my leg up and it just flopped to the floor sideways at the knee.
It was the single most painfull thing I have ever felt, apart from after the surgery, that stung a bit aswell.

I'm extremely lucky compared to most - aside from the usual childrens ailments like chicken pox (twice somehow) and occasional colds the worst thing I've had is a suspected broken bone in my wrist which had me in plaster for a couple of months, I thought it was quite cool at the time but looking back it would have been rather better for my studies if it didn't happen. Pretty much all other injuries are sports or stupidity related and not hugely serious.

Shingles
Flu
Tonsillitis

Had two eye operations at age three to correct squints, they left my left eye usable and right really poor. Cannot ever drive because of it...

Even with my good eye I cannot read the numberplate at the required distance.

Not short sighted or long sighted, this is nothing that can be corrected with lenses.

Weird, I've had almost exactly the same injury to my thumb. Severed the tendon that runs over the top and have an identical scar to yours.

Fell over a stone wall in the Army, with all the gear I was carrying had a rotational spinal injury.

Apart from pain no problems until 3 years ago when the nerve died and now have a partly paralysed right leg. It means I now have a limp and can't run.

1. broken collar bone
2. appendix removal
3. shattered left hand
4. dislocated both shoulders at total of 3 times each
5. concussion serveral times
6. broken orbital bone over my left eye
7. prostate cancer -> radical robotic prostectomy
8. incisional hernia repair
9. serious vital infection resulting in projectile vometing (both ends!) and major chest pains.
10. depression (suprising that!)
11. Gout

but i'm still here, still going strong :)

A cold. I've seriously never done anything worse. Stood on a nail when I was about 7? Had inpertigo, guess that's worse than a cold.

Had to my tonsils removed when I was 5.

Thought to have had some cysts in my stomach area but I waited too long to check out the pains I had (also had to convince the doctors that no, I do not have IBS) to find anything to conclude it with when I had my operation.

I got bitten by a tick when I was around 13-14 and got a lot of bad things (still) because of that. Really bad fatigue, depression, weak joints and a tremor in one hand was the most noticeable ones. Did not find out about it until years after when I had a lumbar puncture and they found the bacteria in my spinal fluid :( It was thought I was just a typical lazy teenager, heh.

Pyloric Stenosis.

Snap.

Had this when I was weeks old. Mum and Dad kept taking me back to the doctor when I couldn't hold down food and kept vomiting it back up accross the room. Doc told them it was a stomach bug. Parents then took me down hospital as had an instinct something was not right. I was dangerously dehydrated, under weight and was later described as being close to death.
I was diagnosed with Pyloric Stenosis. This is a tightening of the lower stomach muscles which stops food from emptying from the stomach. I had my head shaved and tubes attached to me, drip and all sorts. I got operated on and still have the 2 inch scar accross my stomach to this day. The Operation fixed me within days.

Really counting my blessings here when I see what some of you folks have to contend with or have had. I have a bit of asthma which really doesn't bother me as such but my worst health problem would have been eczema from as early as I can remember until my mid teens. It's weird that you itch so bad that you're not content until you literally scratch the skin of yourself.
My parents probably found it quite difficult and frustrating that I'd get bandaged up in hospital but no sooner than I got home I'd have the bandages off and tearing lumps out of myself.
Thank God it's only a distant memory now though.
