*** The Official HTC Desire (Bravo) Thread! ***

Since last night I've tried Leedroid, Oxygen, SuperVillain, and RXMixHD.

Oxygen and Leedroid seemed the fastest. RCMixHD is quite sluggish at the moment, but I've only just flashed it.

Going to try The Ultimate Droid and NeoPhyte in a minute :)

I've just got myself one of these, Awesome just don't cover what i think of it so far.
Is there any reading up i need to do on tips & tricks, I used Crackberry for my Blackberry is there a similar site ?

Cheers.

Well, you should root then S-OFF once you're familiar with Android, this is when the fun begins :p

I created a root guide thread not long ago and S-OFF can be done very easily once you're rooted and running.

Ran into a problem.

Tried to flash a new rom, and installation failed. It loops on reboot now. I don't have any other rom on the sdcard to flash with.

Without a card reader, is there any way of placing a new rom file on the sdcard without the phone booting?

Boot into recovery, enable the mount USB option, connect phone to PC via USB and transfer a new ROM over.

Unmount USB and flash new ROM after doing a full wipe in recovery.

How come you don't choose to use ROM manager for flashing roms? I rooted last night and am currently looking for the best rom, and rom flash method!

ROM Manager uses clockworkmod recovery, I much prefer the fuller features AmonRA recovery and it's the same recovery type I have been using for a couple of years now from my first Android phone.

Going to stick with Oxygen for now, it's really fast.

As it's not a Sense rom though, I don't get the Facebook integration with my contacts. Is there any alternative to this? I just want their display pictures really.

You can delete the apk from recovery via ADB.

Code:
1:
With the phone booted into recovery mode, open a cmd prompt on your tools folder within the Android SDK folder and enter the following commands

2:
adb shell mount /system
^ That mounts the system for modification.

3:
adb shell ls /system/app/
^ That lists the files in that directory.

4:
adb shell rm /system/app/APLICATIONNAME.apk
^ That deletes the app

Probably worth removing security manager too then re-installing.

Robbie

Just got around to trying this mate. However the ES Security Manage apk isn't in that location by the looks of it. Anywhere else worth searching??

fair enough, just a quickie, what is the best way to take a backup of my current phone? Would it be a choice of ROM Manager or AmonRA as you mentioned?

thanks.

The mobile desktop thread makes me want to do stuff to my Desire.

How hard is it to do this? I've never rooted a phone before.

Can I root and still have SenseUI? What is the best rom is this the correct term?) to use?

What did you want to do to it? You can change the looks of the phone quite a lot without having to root :)

I'd like it to look this:

Arrgh!!! It does do this. You just need to install the Facebook for Android app from the market, sync it and choose to sync with existing contacts. For any it's not sure about it will not put the contact photo in, all you do here is long press, edit contact then press the menu button and "Join". This will display a list of possible contacts from your facebook friends.

Hmmm, not sure where else it would be, all apks should be in system/app or data/app!

Clockworkmod recovery (rom manager) creates a system backup the same way AmonRA does but the layout is different. I don't know what the success rate is time after time for Clockworknmod as I've only used it a few times but I've never had an issue with AmonRA and his recovery is fully supported and updated directly so I prefer that for this reason in addition to the previous!

What's all this talk about upgrading the radio?

Does it relate to Orange? I am on Orange at the moment, but my Desire is unbranded. Does this make a difference?

Radio images relate to the internal workings of the phone from the data receiver/antennae to the camera and so on.

I don't think radio issues matter any more since these have been resolved a while back :p

Unrevoked will bypass any requirement for gold cards and so on so just root away and flash a ROM. You should update the radio if the ROM developer recommends a specific radio, usually the latest version.

There is a regularly updated thread on XDA for the latest Desire Radios too :)

I want to backup my current rom using ROM manager, I clicked Backup current ROM and ti went away, requested root access and said it was going to install clockwork. I now have a 2Mb "update.zip" file on my SD card, is this the ROM backup?! if not what is this!? do I still need to click backup rom!?
