Do footballers deserve the money they get paid?

If reducing sportpeoples wages meant I paid far less for my Sky Sports sub Im all for it :p. No doubt the main reason it costs so much is because of the high TV rights costs - but I dont naturally see the connection between that and wages...

Doctors are paid very handsomely indeed, don't worry about that!

Yeah but c'mon Fox. It certainly isn't £70k a week now is it. I bet most of them don't earn what a Footballer earns in a year. Even if they've worked for 4 years.

Not particularly and if you read my earlier post you'd see that I have said they are paid what they are worth. Golf is no different to football in that the best players generally make the most money. What is being questioned is the remuneration for kicking/whacking a ball around in comparison to an average wage. you see that surely?

Which golfers are on a salary?

It's bloody hard becoming a top flight footballer as well, otherwise their skills wouldn't be worth as much...

Yes but there are many prospective med students and footballers that don't make it to the top, but the ones that do get paid a lot.

A GP in his late 40's might earn £75k-100k
A footballer will earn that in 1 or 2 weeks.

well, they're only paid because of the industry demands. it's only been this ridiculous for the past 20 years. it is a relatively short career but the money they are paid and the way a lot of football clubs are run does sicken me. very bad example all round. rugby is a much finer example of decency both on and off the field.

The thing is, it is the sheer number of people willing to pay Sky Sports subs at the current price that allows footballers to earn that level of wage. Just have to look at Setanta and the SPL to see what happens when people vote with their feet.

No. No they don't.

I reckon that about sums the thread up.

I dont think anyone in this country deserves that silly amount of money a week, yes, they may play a sport, and yes they should get paid for it, but not hospital wing money....

I wouldn't say they deserve it, but like any job they provide a very valuable service to the business they work for. So in some respects they do deserve it.

You could apply this logic to any person with an incredibly well paid job and who is being paid 1000x more than someone who works harder for a pittance or who is in the medical profession for example.

Completely pointless discussion to be honest.

And why should they? The percentage of people who can earn crazy money in football must be a minute percentage of the population. Unlike doctors.

Again, not one person has stated why they think they shouldn't be paid the money they do other than "Doctors/Soldiers/Bus Conductors aren't paid the same".

That is no argument.

Some do some don't it's the same with actors and sports people, do television presenters and reality tv "stars" almost all deserve no where near what they are paid. The only person who deserve's the money he made is probably Chris Evans and he made his money. Jonathan Ross sure as hell doesn't deserve his BBC pay and nor does Adrian Chiles.

And neither could or should they. Can you imagine the state of public finances if a doctor was paid £70k a week?

come on Morba, you're being a little pedantic here. While not on a salary, their income scale is generally in line with their level of ability relative to their peers, much in the same way as footballers. Both sports have additional income from marketing streams as well.

Because they actually do work. I understand some footballers do, do the odd charity work and get sponsorships. But I think people who actually make a difference, that have worked countless years to gain a qualification then worked and possibly saved lives have some recognition in their pay.

Even the Soldiers that are in the army, that risk lives should get decent pay.

Yes, becoming a Footballer is difficult because you have to be very very skilled, even more so to play for a top named club. But paying silly amounts of money like £250k is just a joke. It's just too much money imo. I could understand £50/70k a week for a top footballer.

I guess there's just a lot of competition between clubs to have the best players. And to have the best players is to pay those players silly amounts of money.
