Flu, how many of you have actually had it?

Isn't it possible that I had/have a mild form of it? Or is there no such thing?

It's possible to have a virus that gives you mild flu-like symptoms or bad cold symptoms. It's not as simple as - you either have flu or a cold. There are hundreds of possible viruses you could have.

General symptom difference between cold and flu

Ive had flu once.
I felt bad at work, dizzy/hot etc. Went home at lunch time. Went to bed and woke up 2 days later.
Then I spend the next 2 weeks getting over it. In bed.

If you have flu, your in bed with shivers, fever and the rest of the cold simptoms. I couldnt touch a computer when I had mine.

/edit

Just read the post above, yeah, it was pretty much like that. With a cold, your bunged up etc. Flu, your in bed and it feels like your fighting for your life. Not a plesant experience.

I've never had the flu....until now. I get 4/5 colds a year but never the flu.

Urgh.

Fever
Temperature changes
Cough
Feel lethargic
Phlegm in throat
Blocked Nose

Anyway, I've just been sleeping and taking over the counter meds. Not asking for any medical advise but how long does a stint of flu usually take to go away if you do nothing more than rest?

got all these symptoms plue tonsilitus :\ the annoying thing is ive only had tonsilitus once before as well and that was in the summer :( going to the doctors in 20 mins though to get some antibiotics.

I definitely have a combination of those, for example I 100% had a fever and a headache. Looks like I was lucky enough to get a very bad cold and avoid the flu.

Like we have all told you :)

Now man up and get a decent haircut as well ;)

had a very light dose of it i think, but worse than a cold but not full flu, i had put it down to being out doing deliveries at -6 every morning.

Flu in my book is not being able to stand up for several days.

I once got out of bed feeling rough and instantly collapsed, gathered myself and proceeded to crawl to the toilet. Flu like but the next day I was well enough to move about and sit watching TV eating soup.

If I was bed-ridden for a few more days I'd have said it was flu. Never had anything else that even comes close.

Starting this morning, dry cough, one hell of a headache, really really tired, aching all over though certainly not bad enough i can't move about, and chills on and off...

I've had the flu before and it doesn't feel like it yet, couldn't lift myself off the sofa for more than to go to the toilet when i did, most of the time that would induce me feeling so dizzy i'd throw up too. But it feels like it's possibly the start, never had a cold where i've had aches and chills before so that'd be a new one on me if it is just a cold starting

Thing that's really ****** me off today though is my managers reaction to me going home feeling unwell :/

Yes. Nearly killed me and I took about 6 months to recover (I'm astmqtic and have a weak immune system)

Not as bad as having Glandular Fever. I really was on deaths door, weeks in hospital and two bloody years to recover.

I get a little cross when people who say they have flu when all they have is a little cold....

FFFFFFFUUUUUUUU

Nah don't think so, there's a heavy cold or Flu.

That would be like having a mild form of Aids.

... this is why OCUK bans medical advice :p

From studying influenza A extensively, I can quite confidently confirm that you can indeed have a mild flu.

Had it once when I was at school... it lasted 2 weeks during which, I lost my voice for the first week, couldn't swallow without cringing in pain, struggled to breathe, coughed up phlegm every hour or so, had virtually no appetite resulting in me going from 9stone down to 8stone (in just those 2 weeks! :eek) and slept about 15hrs a day because I was continuously tired.

I've had the flu twice in my life, I get a cold a few times a year, usually only one annoying day of major runny nose, and the blocked for a couple of days, but a flu is a very different beast.

I remember both my flus, I really couldn't get up from bed, I had the shakes, and was totally disorientated, I recall the last one was 7 or so years ago, and was so bad tha day after i was first down with it my father had to come 30 miles look after me for the day. Felt like I was a kid again :P

Twice in a lifetime is enough, sure to get it again at some point, but I can bloody well do without thank you very much.

Yep, if you can get out of bed and do stuff then you haven't got the flu.

I've had it a couple of times over the last 10 years and it wipes me out for 3 days and still fell grim for a few days after that. First sign of flu for me is usualy starting to get the shivers even if I should be warm as the fever starts and my temperature goes up.

Nothing to do at that point other than hit the Beechams pull the quilt up, sleep for 2 days and hope the wife is feeling sympathetic :)

I don't think I have the Flu as I can move around, but I am definitely not 100% healthy.

I have been sick on more than one occasion, my body temperature keeps variating heavily. I have something in my throat, which is making me cough, which is making my throat hurt more and it is going round and round and my throat really hurts.

Plus a nice headache and apparently I look like rubbish. God I hate being Ill.

OP does not have flu. With flu, you can barely lift your head off the pillow and certainly can't look at a computer screen with any comfort to make posts.

A medical friend of mine told me the difference between having a cold and a flu is big. If you see a £20 note on the floor and and you have flu you won't pick it up.

I get annoyed at people who claim they have flu when they've just got a cold. I had a cold for 8-9 days. You just get on with it, First Defence is a marvellous thing.
