100 meg

VM 20Mb. Going to get 50Mb once I get a job and 100Mb when it rolls out here estimated to be September 2011. Been with NTL cable for years and always had the speed paid for unless there has been a fault. But from my memory there is atleast 1 24hour problem every year. And most of them only take the download speed down and do not completely lose internet.

Been on 50mb with Virgin for 2 years and can't fault it, and fully agree with what has been said abou most of the population expecting 20mb for 67p a month with free phone calls and the like. You get what you pay for.
50mb started off at 38 quid excluding phone line, that's now down to 28 and when for their 100mb it's 35 shiny pounds. Just wish they could give me a date when it'll be in my exchange :(

I pay £66 a month for
50mb internet
all the TV channels including sky sports and movies (HD box)
phone line with free calls.

I have been a customer of Telewest/Cable/Virgin for over 10 years. :)

My connection is :)

Universally available free or nominal fee basic flat rate 2mb broadband enabling websurfing and email access topped up by any faster speeds at pay per Gb might well be coming and the answer - it supports net neutrality (ISPs don't care what it is you download any more), the more you download the more you pay and the users that have the most impact on the network pay the most to enable it to be upgraded to cope.

Customers HATE the PAYG usage model, remember what happened in the dialup days as soon as (was it AOL?) brought out a flat rate product, nobody wanted dial up any more.
Same deal with mobile phones, almost nobody is on PAYG any more.

Even though PAYG often makes sense financially, people like to know exactly what their spending is in advance, and much prefer to make a call or watch a lolcat knowing the money has already been spent.

I disagree with you there, easy for you to say when you get what you pay for, what about the likes of me and many thousands that don't get what they pay for, I pay £27.99 a month, daytime it is useless(most times less than a 1MB), cannot game on it, just browse the net and thats it

Ditch the BT, If you're prepared to pay that sort of money go with a premium isp like Xilo, IDNet or AAISP.
Xilo Office pack works out well for me - increased upload speed, good connection quality all day and manageable download limits (peak time is high enough not to worry about for normal browsing and streaming video, and off peak is unlimited for bulk downloads overnight)

It still sucks that thanks to my location I have to pay near £40 / month for a 2Mb/832Kb line, whereas VM areas will soon be on 100Mb/10Mb with higher usage limits for the same money.

For all of those saying Canada's broadband is nothing special, I suggest you have a look at Shaw which is like their BT. They offer 100mb and 50mb fibre optic packages, available pretty much everywhere that isn't in the middle of the artic, ofcourse they are much more expensive than what we have here, but you get what you pay for.

I won't comment on the US but I'd be surprised if they were that far behind Canada.

Virgin Media :)
£20 pm I believe

Fine if you're not on a home line :S

£40 a month including BT line rental. Over priced?

Does seem a bit overpriced. Maybe the line rental i'd say. I currently pay £15 a month for broadband with o2 and £11 a month for line rental with sky. I get this:

I live in a town around 12 miles from leeds.

I think this is the problem.

Some people pay $20 for 3mb per month and this guy pays $20 for 200.

It's not the broadband that's fine, it's the fact that companies know you'll pay it either way, in this age internet is pretty much taken for granted so if they can charge it they will. In some countries where you pay for what you get, this 200mb guy would be paying atleast 100 pounds so that companies would make enough money for the infrastructure he's using, but as it stands, we're all paying the same.

Well that's a business line presumably with VM. As far as I know, you have to pay a lot though to get it installed so..

I'm from Sweden originally (only moved to Scotland a few months ago) and back home we've had 100Mb fibre in most cities for over half a decade now. I was a bit surprised when I came here and Virgin's ADSL service is appalling. Going to give Infinity a try now, looks promising enough.

My Estonian friend has come back with something truly amazing.

Not his line, but a friend of his who has this. The latest in Estonia. O.M.G.

His friends equipment in his flat cannot cope, as the connection should be '1Gbit'.

*edit*

Oh, as another kick in the teeth for us over here. This is my friends connection (on post #1), pinging to Milton Keynes, all the way from Estonia.

Yum. Internet that's limited by the server you're conneting to/downloading from (most of the time) :D

How much is he paying for that over there? Is it a home connection, or a business/Uni?
