Is 21CN still going? Seemed like BT sidelined it in their enthusiasm put in FTTC. My exchange used to have a switchover date but now there's no ETA.

Well 21CN is a name applied to a lot of things now. Officially 21CN is the overall project to move BT's core network from an ATM backbone to an IP based one (complete with voice being carried as SIP traffic between exchanges etc). That's very much still happening.

Some on the ADSL2+ broadband upgrades which were labelled with disputable accuracy as 21CN work have been delayed in favour of FTTC, most likely as FTTC is a heap of work upgrading cabinets and running new cabling and openreach only have so many engineers.

I imagine if it was due before it'll happen someday but enabling FTTC has got a headline priority now for better or worse.

If your Mum is worried about contracts, Wightcable offer a contract free service for a £70 deposit.

You simply pay your deposit and £30 install fee, and you even can cancel after one month, get your deposit back and everyone is still happy.

I wouldn't want to rely on them as my sole means of connection, though. I have Sky LLU installed too, although I only achieve 4mbps. If you're in Newport/Ryde/Sandown/Cowes (there may be others), you could always take Sky's free 2mbit service as a backup if you're a Sky customer.

Been on 50 ever since it launched in my area

Never really had any problems, been very happy with the service.

I will have to wait a few months before I can get the 100 service
