Our project this summer!

this part of your satement has me puzzeld can you elaborate on it

Sure, we are surveying both pristine primary forest and forest that has been cut down and then allowed to regenerate after different levels of clearance and disturbance due to agriculture/logging. This is now protected from hunting and other potentially harmful human activities. Both areas will be surveyed and the abundance and distribution of biodiversity compared. Focus will be on determining how ecosystems can recover from such devastating environmental change and if they are as valuable to conserve compared to untouched forest.

People in this thread seem to think that research is free...

I suppose the difference is that here the money is getting raised directly from the public whereas it is normally raised behind the scenes from funding bodies in the form of a grant. Judging by the responses it's just as well not all research is funded this way.

Off to H&M to do market research, require £500 but could come down to £300 if people are being tight, anyone feeling generous? :)

No, people in this thread think research is paid for by other means including grants from interested parties.

It isn't generally used as an excuse to blag literally 5 figure sums off the general public so you can go on what is basically a 6 week jolly on the other side of the world.

Depends, do you pay for your own travel?

I'd be happy to pay for a flight if I got free accomodation and living costs whilst I was there!! What a great deal!

This isn't the sort of thing that should be funded by charitable donations, there are far far better places for your money if you wish to give to a good cause. No matter how people try and dress it up this isn't anything other than a bunch of students going to a fantastic place for a virtually free field trip.

We do get considerable funding from interested parties, there is no excuse to blag money at all, this money is used directly to fund research and most of the time we raise the extra money by holding band nights, quizes and so on. And, i'll say it again, it will NOT be a 6 week jolly. I could have used my money and saved my time to just go to Peru and just travel but instead I am giving time and money to help a cause I believe in.

Do you think most charities don't pay or provide the people that work for them with accomodation and food?

Do you think your jolly to Peru is anything like volunteering at a cancer hospice in Rotherham?

I'd be amazed if there is anything not known about the Amazon in Peru that a bunch of students on a bargain holiday will be able to tell the established science community.

actually they dont i know a guy who goes to africa every year to help a charity and he has to pay for his own flights and living expenses.

anyway
we need to raise an awful lot to pay for equipment, food, permits and wages for the guides/scientists.
so you want people to pay your wages out of the donation? you and your friends are the "scientists" on this expedition ?
or is it just a holiday and you will pay some local "scientists" to collect data for you.

No I don't and I wasn't pretending it was. However, this type of volunteering generally requires going into the middle of nowhere and working full time which requires money. Just because we cant afford to pay for the whole thing doesn't mean we shouldn't be able to help. You will be amazed then that the last expedition got very good results including finding and identifying new species in one area. And work form last summer is currently about to be published in a journal. Your forgetting that we are working with the scientists that are part of the science community.
