January Transfer Window 2010/2011 Season Rumours/Signings

I'd let him go to Chelsea or Man City, but I'd want bigger bucks than if he went abroad. I'd be looking for a minimum £50 million. One rumour I've seen this evening is that Chelsea are going to offer £45 million + Sturridge tomorrow. Dont think I'd take that, I'd want pure cash from Chelsea. If City want in on the action then they can offer me cash + tevez :)

Why would you want to strengthen your rivals like that though

I wouldnt even mind Chelsea in the summer, done properly.
But his statements only like 10-15 days ago, combined with the timing, and then adding Chelsea on top and its hard to forgive.

Has it been confirmed he said anything about Chelsea? Or just that he's handed in a transfer request? Hopefully this won't impact on your deal with Suarez if one of his motivations was being able to play with Torres (Though I'm sure that's just one of those generic statements thrown out there by the player/agent to warm to the club, fans etc).

Too late in the window, would take £80 mill cash only in this window considering we'll be desperate to buy which instantly adds 30% to any deal we try to make.

-edit-
Doing the rounds at the moment, hope it gets a sing out next week!

On Jan the 9th he was a Red,
Torres, Torres.
Now hes ****ed off instead
Torres, Torres
He loved the club and he loved the fans
Then slapped in a transfer demand,
Fernando Torres - loyalty in decline!

The official club statement -

Liverpool FC have confirmed that Fernando Torres has on Friday evening submitted a transfer request. The request has been rejected.

The Club said in a statement: "Fernando Torres tonight submitted a written transfer request, which has been rejected by Liverpool.

"Fernando is under a long-term contract and the Club expects him to honour the commitment he made to Liverpool FC and its supporters when he signed the agreement."

Agree with what's been said. 3 days before the end of the window is a bit disrespectful. Does he really expect to be allowed to leave in that time and for Liverpool to find an adequate replacement?

Its disrespectful? Should he have handed in a transfer request at the start of the window then found out no one was willing to spend 30mil and no offers came in, whats the sense in that.

Maybe if Liverpool hadn't been so slow about getting in reinforcements, how long after Kenny was installed was he still claiming in interviews he got a quick call on a cruise, hasn't met with the owners and hasn't discussed bringing anyone in yet, 10 days, 2 weeks after he took charge? Hardly a sign of stability and of moving forwards. Suarez deal "he's 22-28mil" in the press, and from Ajax, so they keep offering 10mil less, would Torres have asked for a transfer request if they signed up Suarez 2 weeks ago and a winger, and a left back already, maybe not.

As for replacements, theres plenty of good value buys out there, anyone who says different is daft. Sure if you want to go pick up David Villa it will cost you, but you don't have to buy people at their peak, with a long contract left. How much did Nasri, Arshavin, RVP cost, what about Hernandez. Kranjcar, Modric, etc, etc, etc.

If you have to have star name signing sure it will cost you, theres dozens/hundreds of great players who sign for great value.

They got a shirt sponsor recently (£100m over 5 seasons or something). Can borrow against future earnings I guess.

It was a 120mil deal, they were around 150mil in debt iirc, and took out a loan to cover the Villa deal. They don't have a lot of cash though long term the shirt deal will probably pay off much of the debt, though their debt + interest and only getting a certain amount a year they'll be left with a more manageable but still significant debt.

Lots of clubs are rather stupidly borrowing money against future tv money and things like that, West Ham and Pompie have done that and other clubs have too. Generally speaking its impossible to know what kind of financial shape they are in.

EDIT:_ quick check, they took out a 125mil loan to cover wages and other expenses because they had no cash, then not long after they sign a 120mil shirt deal, I'm guessing those will mostly cancel each other out. But long term the issue is they had a 1 billion euro tv rights deal, and a VERBAL gaurentee they would be paid, and the people who own them are having trouble paying and being paid by other tv companies, or some such madness. Theres really no details of their current debt or what they are still owed. Maybe they are owed a billion and are 500mil in debt or maybe they are only owed another 200million and are 20million in debt, its not clear.

Doesn't that depend entirely on your staff's ability to recognise potential?

Liverpool have a woeful track record of 'return on investment' from players both under the Fat Spanish Waiter or Woy.

Double edged sword though, it could be that because a few weeks ago he said he wanted to see out his contract with Liverpool that nobody bothered to try a bid, whereas perhaps if he had put in a transfer request early in the window it would have alerted other teams that he actually might be available and start bidding. We'll never know for certain of course but I'm of the opinion that if Torres says he wants to go clubs would start putting in bids.

I do think this answers for a few things, I imagine he's wanted to leave for a little while and now has more of a reason to now that Liverpool have enough of a replacement for him I guess. He'd suit Utd, would never go there though..

"great players" tend to keep a team ticking over when merged in / around better world class players.
With all respects - a Nasri, Arshavin or RVP, or even two of them, compared to Torres would be a step back in terms of goal scoring ability, marketing and drawing other talent into the club.

Suarez is as much a replacement for Torres as Rio was a replacement for VDS when he got sent off a bit back ;)

Different players, Suarez cant lead the line.

Yeah, but it's another proven/good striker, Torres won't feel as bad asking for a transfer request leaving you with Suarez instead of...N'Gog? :D

They were £400m in debt. They had to take out a £100m loan just to cover wages.
I'm aware, but all arguments of their finances aside* they were always willing to buy Fabregas as long as the player and manager was okay with it. They couldn't check off those two boxes so they left it until the future.

Haven't they gone in and paid extremely large sums for other players since they first started on Cesc? Wouldn't thay say that money probably isn't the main factor in backing off until later?

*Basically they have a lot to borrow against as they're, well, Barcelona, and the way Spanish football finances work both with football rights and club subscriptions gives them monumental income that probably only United could dream of here, so I wouldn't look too much into those scary figures just as you shouldn't for Real, although for different reasons.
